True story... I was at a soccer match recently (I live outside the US) and it was a minor league game. There was so much diving going on that I almost left the game. One guy actually fell down, then got up when the ref turned their back, then fell down again before the ref turned around.

In another instance... this guy was howling in pain, like OH GOD BRING THE AMBALAMPS, and as soon as the ref said he wasn't carding anyone the player leaps (literally leaps) off the ground and is like ALRIGHT LETS PLAY SOME FUCKING FOOTBALL!

It actually led to a discussion among my friends about how they need to institute some sort of hockey-style penalty box and just start taking people out of play for 5 or 10 minutes for diving. Because the level of sheer bullshit that happens during games is astounding. It's not even a "oh ha ha soccer is known for diving" funny. It's a "I fucking paid to come to this game to watch assholes role around on the ground".
