is there some explainable scientific reason why it is possible or isn't possible?

I can make them rotate clockwise and counter-clockwise but i can not focus on both of them at the same time.

however if i don't focus on the middle but just focus above the gif it does work.

That dark blue line is easier to track than the red one, so even if you can get the right one to "spin clockwise", the left one will continue to spin clockwise, due to the blue line implying that's the way it's going.

[–]informationmissing 0 points1 point ago

You can force your brain to perceive any of these as spinning in any direction. Try harder, you can make that left one spin counter-clockwise if you want to.

[–]Zemedelphos 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I can. I've managed to make each individual one spin in any direciton I please, at my whim. The problem I have is looking at the middle one AND getting the left one to turn counterclockwise.

[–]Mikeavelli 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Look at their faces, it's possible to keep them spinning in their proper directions.

[–]Zemedelphos 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The left one's proper direction is clockwise, not counterclockwise. And staring at the middle one's face does not make me stop noticing the blue lines on the left one.

[–]AlrightOkay 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's the eyes. The eyes in the left are perfectly out of phase with the one on the right.

[–]skakruk 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The only way this is "possible" is by not realizing/considering the colors and lights of the right and left... because actually, the right one will always turn clockwise and the left counterclockwise, given that they are not only silouettes, they have face and different color legs with delineation, so will always see one blocking the sight of the other.

If they were completely black, just a shadow, you could make them rotate however you want.

I saw a seminar once where something similar was done with points on the surface of an invisible rotating barrel. The seminar had something to do with saccadic movements of the eye.

[–]Jioo -2 points-1 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Has got something to do with the coloring of the limbs, not sure exactly what, but yea. (notice the standing leg for the left one is red, on the right one it's blue)

[–]g8z05 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's pretty simple. Whichever color is in the foreground when the legs pass over each other is the leg that appears in front. That, and the white lines drawn to manipulate how you are looking at each one. It's just adding the perception of being 3 dimensional.

[–]hawk1410 -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

not really, this has nothing to so with the coloring of the limbs, If the foot touching the ground is perceived to be the left foot, the dancer appears to be spinning clockwise (if seen from above); if it is taken to be the right foot, then she appears to be spinning counterclockwise.

look right above the gif and squint your eyes. it all matters which way the ponytail is facing, other than that the body is identical on each side, since it is solid black. when you squint your eyes it just looks like a person just turning 180 degrees back and forth

multistable perception is a common issue for a 3D image that's converted to 2D through orthographic projection

for example, you can get this to spin either way: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:PET-MIPS-anim.gif

[–]FlyingLiquor 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

This was part of a project I did for my sensation and perception class... You have no idea how glad I am to see "multistable perception."

For me this only spins clockwise... There are distinct textures/shadows/features on each half the body as well as in the ventral and dorsal part of the body that cover up or move behind other parts when in a certain position. For example the jaw bones and the cervical spine cover each other at certain points in the animation. Those points of references make it impossible for the animation to spin counterclockwise.

[–]bastawhiz 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Nope. Look at it longer.

[–]KumbajaMyLord 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I can look at it all I want... The difference between this one and the spinning dancers is that you have points of references for left, right, ventral and dorsal areas of the body and can see them moving in front or behind each other.

It is in fact very similar to the blue and red lines on the spinning dancers. When you add these points of references the optical illusion is gone (That is, the spinning dancers with the colored lines always spin in one direction, no matter how hard you focus on them).

[–]bastawhiz 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The "points of reference" that you think you are seeing are imagined. This isn't an x-ray: solids bits in the front are the same brightness as solid bits in the back. The brightness/color of points in this kind of imaging are additive, meaning the brightnesses are added with depth, not replaced. Bright colors in the front don't obscure brightness levels in the back.

Furthermore, the image is generated based on cross-sections, not by rotating and scanning the patient. The "clockwise" rotation that you see is generated by orthogonal projection, which I explained in greater detail in my other comment.

[–]Sundaith 0 points1 point ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I don't believe it's impossible. Can you willingly reverse the way you see the image? While I initially see the image moving counter-clockwise, if I keep it in my peripheral and believe the image is spinning either clockwise or counter-clockwise, I can change the way I interpret the animation. All points you've made check out in both directions. The difference between the points of reference in this animation and the ones added to the spinning girl is transparency. Because the reference points in this image are transparent, it is entirely possible to see the image spinning either way without losing content integrity.

[–]pickledspiders 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I also initially saw her turning counter-clockwise, but i found that if I focus on the yellow spots above her bladder, I can get her to start turning clockwise, after which I have to stop looking for some time to make her turn counter-clockwise again.

[–]incandemon 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I just found that if I twitch my head, and blink my eyes the image will start to spin in the same direction that I twichted my head in.

This is why Crow looks like he's facing backwards sometimes.

edit: I WILL NOT LEAVE MY REDDIT ACCOUNT LOGGED IN AT THE CS LAB.

[–]bastawhiz 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

This. Most people assume that 3D perspective projection and orthographic projection have the same properties. They do not.

"Perspective projection" is what we see "in real life". Things nearer to us look bigger than things farther away from us.

"Orthographic projection" is how kids draw cubes in 1st grade (a couple squares and some diagonal lines). Orthographic projection draws a "shadow" where all light emanates from a plane rather than a point. Because of this, two mirrored figures pointed at angles such that ϴ1 = -ϴ2 (facing equal angles relative to 0, which is perpendicular to the light source) will always have identical projections.

[–]informationmissing 0 points1 point ago

White lines around the head and body is creating the illusion of non-synchronous movement.

Colored lines inside the legs reinforcing the synchronous movement of the legs. Also the colors for right and left are reversed.

When you look at the whole, it feels as if heads are turning at a different pace than legs.

Awesome illusion.

I stared at this for awhile trying to find a seam so I could switch my perception of it without looking at either the left or right model. When her erect leg crosses with the standing one imagine she reverses rotation in this way you change your perception from one continuous rotation to back and forth.

Yes, the middle gif and the left gif are going the same direction, clockwise. The right gif is going counter-clockwise.

It's possible to change the direction of the middle one mentally when you quickly change focus to either the left or the right dancer when the middle one is facing perpendicular(at any time to your view), then snap back to the center one. After that, the middle dancer should be going whatever direction of the side you looked at quickly.

Okay. Took a bit, but I managed 3 different states for the center lady. One spinning clockwise, the other spinning counter clockwise, and one... kind of wavering. She spins clockwise, then comes back counter clockwise, Back, forth, back, forth.

Do I win a prize?

I've seen this many times before, but I never noticed until now that she jumps off the ground a little each rotation...

I got it after several minutes of intense concentration. It is easier if you look at the right hand figure, causing it to spin clockwise. Then look at the left hand figure, causing it to spin counterclockwise. For some reason this most often resulted in all of them spinning one direction. However, by repeatedly doing this and then quickly staring at the middle figure I was eventually able to achieve this task, so aptly deemed "Impossibru". Needless to say it was kind of tiring to look at the figures spinning in opposite directions.

For some reason, this morning I could either have them all in sync, or the right one counter and left one clockwise. Usually I can switch at will. Not this morning. :-(

The one on the right an left have the opposite arm an leg sticking out so I believe it's still spinning the same way just different limbs allowing your eyes/mind to adjust the middle one to them...that's what I think

It didn't work - right up to the point where I tried to see if there were really nipples showing. Looked carefully and all of the sudden the wings were spinning in opposites. Boobs. What can't they do.

I did it... I actually did it. for real it didn't took too long but the one on the right started spinning to a different side than the one on the middle and on the left

I like looking at the middle one and making it change directions every once in a while. I make it go clockwise now counterclockwise now back the other way again. Wooo.

[–]sneezyp 0 points1 point ago

If you follow from left to right and back right to left at a certain time, she just spins back and forth never turning her back to you.

[–]Dev1l5Adv0cat3 0 points1 point ago

Stare at the right figurine and out of the corner of your eye you'll notice the left one spin counter-clockwise for a brief moment after the blue leg moves behind the mass of the figure.

this gif is tainted! messed with! you've all been bamboozled, bamboozled ! tell ya!

focus on the middle one alone. it turns clockwise then after 'x' seconds it spins the other direction. don't even look right or left, just focus on the middle one.

nice trick, but you can't get me.

[–]wcmbk 1 point2 points ago

Thats exactly how you're meant to see it. The middle one is ambigious, however the other two use visual aids to force your brain to see it in one direction.

Sorry bro. It's legit. What you thought was the center one "changing direction" was just your brain interpreting it as changing. It literally does not have a direction; your brain simply fills in a direction while you're paying attention to it. Optical illusions - better termed "brain failures".
