I as a Central European I picture the the typical American as a businessman wearing a suit, wielding a Hollywood smile and trying to sell something a bit aggressively, with too much enthusiasm for the product. TV-Shop guy, kinda.

I think this picture is more like how American college kids picture all those other folks around them they want to feel superior to...

I was eating dinner with some French friends-of-friends in Paris. When it came time for dessert, the three Americans abstained and the Parisians all ordered something, in response to which one of them turned to us and exclaimed in delight, "oh, how ironic!"

Thankfully at least one side of the table fulfilled a stereotype.

The cunt.

I was once called "un americano muy diferente." I was pleased.

[–]Ragnalypse 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Why are Americans the only ones not allowed to be prejudicial assholes? If you were a successful black man and someone told you that you were better than your kind, it would be a different story (here at least, a lot of latino nations are cool w/ racism).

[–]xteve -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I can't really speak about the general situation (although, as anybody, I have ideas) But, anyway, in this particular situation I was told that I'm a different kind of American by a co-worker in a restaurant in a busy tourist area of a Spanish city. In that line of work it was reasonable for her (if not fair) to develop the feeling that Americans are loud people who have too much money and don't know how to drink.

[–]Ragnalypse 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

So if I live in the inner city it would be fine for me to think black people are crackheads who dropout of highschool and knife people?

Prejudice is prejudice, either they're both right or they're both wrong.

False dichotomies about complex issues

[–]Ragnalypse 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

There is one great difference I overlooked.

Hating Americans is cool, hating blacks isn't (mostly). Lets dial the groupthink back, set it to anything but 11 please.

[–]neekneek 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Okay yes, Rag, that's nice. But...this one goes to eleven, that's one more than 10, isn't it DiBergi?

[–]chaos386 -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I dunno, I think it's fine in both examples. If you lived in the inner city in a poor, black part of town with lots of crime, and you came across a kid who was trying to break away from all that, telling him "you're not like the rest of your friends" doesn't seem all that offensive to me.

[–]Ragnalypse 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

To be fair, you changed the format. The equivalent would be "You're not like other black people", which has an unequivocal implication that most black people (or most Americans) are bad.

[–]chaos386 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'll admit, I did. I'm giving the benefit of the doubt to the person in xteve's story and assuming that "a different kind of American" was shorthand for "a different kind of American tourist" or "different from the Americans I've met so far".

No, it's no longer called sarcasm when it's repeated day in and day out for years. It's called insulting. Insulting to the 99.99999% of us that don't fit any of the aforementioned stereotypes.

[–]DrascaL 1 point2 points ago

One particular yank embedded a stereotypical impression in my head about 10 years ago.

One of girls met a guy an on IRC that had a crush on her. He flew over and stayed for a week.

He was a spitting image of Silent Bob. Didn't take that full length jacket off the whole time - in the middle of an Australian summer.

Still puts a smile on my face as being so ridiculous.

[–]Eternitras 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

In europe(Britain especially) most people have never shot a gun. In Texas we kinda just take the whole "hunting fan relative" thing for granted, that's not a thing in a lot of places. There's also a large difference between "have you ever ridden a horse?" and "can you ride a horse?" I myself took 3 years of riding lessons and worked on a little camp and eventually did some barrel racing. The BBQ? I know man wtf, it's so delicious how come everyone doesn't do it all the time?

[–]warmfruit 0 points1 point ago

I've been to a fast food restaurant less than twenty times since I can remember, and I've never smoked. I'm neither overly patriotic, nor do i own more than one gun (it's for self defense).

[–]unstablxxx 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's scenes like this that make me disgusted with reddit. Stereotype an ethnic group? No way! Stereotype a sexual preference? No freakin' way! But stereotype Americans, regardless of how untrue, insulting and downright disgusting and reddit is all, 'Murrica! Fuck Yeah!'. Maybe we should commission an artist to draw a 'typical' redditor: sitting in his underwear in his broken computer chair, petrified of real women, pimple-faced from too much Red Bull, overweight from too much Taco Bell, glassy-eyed from too much weed, empty-walleted because he refuses to gain a marketable skill and afraid to walk outdoors, lest he have to have a conversation with someone who doesn't prescribe to the Hivemind. Too bad I'm not a painter.

[–]Orinthopter 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Actually to me the whole "Murrica! Fuck Yeah!" is a commendable way to laugh at oneself. I have always preferred laughing at myself rather than laughing at others.

[–]unstablxxx 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Maybe you see it that way, Orinthopter, bit most redditors who use it, use it in the context of showing just how much better they are than the subject of the joke. It's really getting tiresome.

[–]stillnotking 13 points14 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You'd be surprised how much ideological diversity the middle of the country has. The whole red state/blue state thing is a matter of a few percentage points either way.

Of course that means the coasts have their share of crazies, too.

[–]fluxquanta 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I can't upvote this enough. I live in New York, which has been a solid blue state for many, many years (I think I heard on public radio recently that when the GOP took over the state assembly a few years ago it was the first time in 50 or 60 years). But only because most of the population is concentrated in New York city. My area of the state is as red as it gets, save the college towns. And boy do the rednecks bitch about the laws imposed on the whole state as a result of the city thinking.

There are still talks of secession every once in a while to create "New York" and "North New York".

Na the stereotype is physically lazy. I.e. fat and unfit from never exercising. The job related stereotype is that Americans are exploited by their employers and put up with terrible working conditions

EDIT: whoops downvotes, may I add the other commonly held stereotype is that Americans don't understand sarcasm :)

As a fellow Houstonian...this is just a tad inaccurate, for a Texan anyway. You will find, whilst travelling overseas, that the three most asked questions are: "Do you ride a horse to school/work?", "Why aren't you wearing your hat...you know, the big one?", and "Can I see your gun?" Sad but very true. Source: I lived overseas for a year, and literally everyone I knew asked all three within a week.

I saw a guy like that at the Alabama state fair, minus the machine gun. But He was smoking a cigarette while hooked up to his oxygen. True story...

I would like to disagree, but I have more guns than I'd like to say on the internet. With that in mind, i'm probably in the 95 percentile in terms of health.

I'm afraid to let people know that I'm American because of this very presumption. I'm tired of answering questions about the local church, where the closest McDonald's is, how many guns I have, do I need oxygen, etc.
