Alright, I promise I'm not dumb, but where is the error here?

2 pieces= 1 cut

1 cut= 10 minutes

3 pieces= 2 cuts= 20 minutes

Do'oh. I can't explain why this eluded me, thanks for the explanation.

Think of it in terms of the number of cuts per minute, and not the number of boards per minute

Have to count minutes PER CUT, not PER PIECE (two pieces = 1 cut). Cutting 1 board into 2 pieces in 10 minutes is 10 minutes per cut - three pieces (2 cuts) is 20 minutes.

The error is the teacher's. The student had the correct answer.

Nice repost.

Nice host, too, by the way.

I don't get it. If you're only making 2 cuts (this will split the board into 3 pieces) and it takes you 10 minutes to make ONE cut (as it has already been established) it should take you 20 minutes to make two cuts. 10 times 2. Bah.

No, that's not right. A single piece into two pieces is one cut. One cut takes 10 minutes. A single piece into three pieces is two cuts. Two cuts takes twice as much time as one cut. Ergo, 20 minutes.

Explain to him as if he is your son's age: with a chocolate bar and a plastic knife.

No, fuck you. This has been floating on the internet for YEARS. If that was your son's homework, he'd be in college by now. Dick.

This has been floating on the internet for YEARS.

Not sure if years. Earliest I could find was from October 2010 so that makes it a little over a year old. http://failblog.org/2010/10/05/epic-fail-photos-teacher-fail-3/

Even still, it is obviously not the OPs son.

Listen. I understand. You found a funny image, so you posted it to reddit for sweet karma. But don't lie. This isn't your son's. You didn't take this picture. You had nothing to do with this picture. Don't lie.

You fucking worthless piece of shit fuckface.

tl;dr: I'm tired and could use a snack.

Definitely be an ass about this situation. I respect teachers for what they do but there are a rare few that need to be humbled a little. My sister had an issue in the 5th grade where she submitted an essay and recieved a zero for it because the teacher said she didnt turn it in. My parents called and asked the teacher to double check the filing cabinet and look for the essay but the teacher insisted my sister never turned it in. Eventually my parents got school permission to search the teachers room and found it in her desk filing cabinet right where it was supposed to be. Some teachers need to be dealt with.

time for a new school. Although this math may save you money if you pay him to do chores. Wash Dad's car and get $10. Wash Mum and Dad's car gets you $15.....just like you were taught in school.

You could adopt this as your billing system, might save us some money. You may well go bankrupt but you will be providing cheap health care.
