A place to share interesting photographs and pictures. Feel free to post your own, but please read the rules first (see below), and note that we are not a catch-all for general images (of screenshots, comics, etc.)

Hover over to read.

Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

There are a few of these around China (I also know there is another one just outside of Beijing)

From my understanding and what I've been told by some Chinese people is the problem is that a few early entrepreneurs (1980's at the beginning of privatization) wanted to build theme parks. What they didn't take into account was that no one had cars and where they were building these parks was way too far away from the city to walk, thus they were abandoned.

[–]Eternitras 288 points289 points ago*

This is the main premise behind Spirited Away!

EDIT: You fuckers trying to call me out that it's not, yes it is. The whole fucking thing takes place around a bathhouse that's part of an old decrepit amusement park, they drive right the fuck into it.

[–]JuanRomero 34 points35 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I thought the story was a metaphor for bathhouse prostitution?

[–]dclowd9901 9 points10 points ago

wat

[–]wfarighi 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

definitely bathhouse prostitution.

[–]Brigand_of_reddit 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Not much of a metaphor.

[–]Cannondale1986 18 points19 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

WHAT? I need to watch that movie again.

[–]9ren 15 points16 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

There's no doubt. This is a theme park.
In the 90's there were lots of plans for them, but many didn't succeed.
This is probably one of them.

script link (working! just takes a while)

[–]crilen 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That script is weird in that, it doesn't show who is saying what. Odd to read if you haven't seen the movie in years.

[–]Xerifilm 64 points65 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

mind = blown

[–]Demotic 22 points23 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's not the premise. Simply the locale is in such place. Like most miyazaki movies this is about how we as human are destroying the earth and nature.

[–]ethraax 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I really don't think Spirited Away is about humans destroying the Earth and nature. I can't think of any events in the movie that support that theme at all. I'm pretty certain Spirited Away is actually a metaphor for prostitution.

[–]dclowd9901 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

What? How so? The story is about a little girl that finds inner strength because she's forced to. It's about how people rise to the challenges they're faced with, no matter how inept they seem.

[–]feeltogrip 11 points12 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Wrong. It's about a group of working class friends who go on a hunt for mythical pirate treasure, only to discover they're far more capable than their parents and siblings give them credit for. And they befriend a developmentally disabled man with superman strength.

[–]dclowd9901 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

No, that's The Goonies. The movie's about a young mouse and his family who move out to the untamed west from the east to seek prosperity, while a cat friend of the family tries to muster the inner strength to fight off local hostiles.

[–]swiftekho 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Haku's home getting destroyed for the apartment complex?

The river spirit thought to be a stink spirit? (pollution)

The theme park is bad management of land

Now it's definitely not the main theme like Demotic says, but I haven't seen a single Miyazaki movie where he doesn't at least touch on environmentalism.

[–]ethraax 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Oh, I agree that he touches on it, but it's nowhere near the main theme of the movie.

[–]rindersnoot 37 points38 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You may have China and Japan confused here.

[–]Eternitras 51 points52 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Same time period and type of entrepreneurial failure, it is indeed Japan but this is the same thing that the whole story is based on.

[–]yangx 10 points11 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Fuck, I need to watch that again. For some reason I really hated it because I was confused the whole time and the monster thing scared me. Need to man up and experience this masterpiece.

[–]MadModderX 8 points9 points ago

My little cousin couldn't watch it because the pigs were really scary, and he didn't want his mom to turn into a pig (he was really little at the time)

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

My 12 year old is still scared of the pigs.

[–]hawthorneluke 1 point2 points ago

I think too many people are looking for meaning (when reading the comments here anyway). I'm sure it was made with many things in mind, but I like to watch the films just as they are. Enjoy them as they are. Take back from them what you like. I can't tell wtf's so great about them either, but they sure fill me with something good. Must be magic.

[–]anothergaijin 10 points11 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Its not the main premise, nor is it the whole story.

Spirited Away is a coming-of-age story - a young girl who is being forced to grow up and/or find herself as the world changes. The fairground was an minor visual element showing a kind of failed past - while we often think about the "good-old days" its not always as we remember.

I'm not sure how'd you'd miss the main premise of the movie - its about as unsubtle as you can get.

[–]davaca 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

[–]realistidealist 37 points38 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Interesting switch of the usual order there, with Santa leading the reindeer. I'm not sure why he is walking around sneakily with a sack and all of them are following him; the tiptoeing implies he's someplace he needs to be quiet, which a bunch of hooved animals clattering after you is not going to be. Maybe they're very purposefully engaging in some kind of ironic role reversal. Iunno.

[–]januszeal 13 points14 points ago

They're urban exploring. :P

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Why is his team a stantler and like five rudolphs?

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Santa's gotta have at least one pokemon on his team.

[–]Brigand_of_reddit 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Well if you noticed they are not in fact full reindeer that are following Santa, but merely disembodied heads. My theory is that the stress of the Christmas season combined with an decreasing amount of belief in his existence drove Santa over the edge into a murderous rampage resulting in the tragic deaths of his beloved reindeer who's spirits now haunt him as he desperately tries to sneak away form the crime scene.

The pictures are impressive and haunting, but the captions are so repetitive... "herpaderp in what would have been an amusement park called 'Wonderland', on the outskirts of Beijing December 5, 2011." YEA WE GET IT.

[–]crackanape 23 points24 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Captions for wire service photos are written to stand alone, so a newspaper can select any one of the photos on its own and have a ready-made caption. Their inclusion/presentation on a web site is incidental to their primary purpose.

[–]Richeh 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Looking at Google Maps, it seems that most of that place has since been bulldozed, including the water park. So much for anyone's hopes of restoration. Except the hotel, I suppose.

From what I've heard from a few people who live near this (this is not far from Beijing, by a fairly popular portion of the Great Wall), a group of farmers in the 1990s pooled their money together to build a theme park similar to Disney Land. With the influx of foreigners entering the country as they opened up to the world, the farmers saw it as an opportunity to make money...since hey, everyone loves Disney. They figured they could cash in on the tourists flooding the country, specifically the Great Wall. What they did not understand was people were coming to China not to visit a knock off Disney park, but the various historical sites that China--one of the oldest civilizations in the world--had to offer.

Its actually amusing because this same mistake can be seen repeated in other cities as well. When I was in Xi'an, the home of the famous terracotta army, I saw these scaled replicas of the Great Pyramids and the Sphinx. They looked old worn down. For some reason people had a trouble grasping what people actually were looking for when they were visiting.

Luckily they figured it out, and now you can get plenty of t-shirts and fake jade at almost any tourist destination...including the Great Wall and the terracotta army excavation site.

This is just what some people told me, so I can't verify it...and my translation/interpretation could be off.

I agree, but Vegas is a good example of opening tourist spots based on Pyramids, Towers, Amusement parks, etc. And it worked out quite well for them.

[–]godin_sdxt 14 points15 points ago

Yeah, but Vegas didn't have any other attractions to draw people away. I mean, it's in the middle of a desert. If it weren't for the casinos, who would ever want to go there?

Think that is bad? China has newly built cities that are ghost towns. Puts the US housing bubble to shame.

This is a great video. It's like this all over China. Here are a few pictures of the city I lived in. The first 3 pictures feature empty buildings, and the last picture is of buildings that are 25% full.

Hmmm strange, when I was in Beijing I went to the Beijing North International Shooting Range....it's obviously somewhere north of Beijing but I don't remember everything because I was following my friend's direction who was acting as my guide.

Anyways, on the way there out in the middle of nowhere we saw construction and it looked like a giant disney land but it isn't the one shown in this thread...

I wonder...

There is no more poetic description of a modern lost childhood than an abandoned theme park. Its almost as if you can here the faint sound of a child's laughter fading away into the background, the smell of candy floss lingering on your nose or the crack roller coasters climbing faintly in the distance. It feels like the Joy isn't gone, we just lost it and need to find it again.
