Because homosexuals are the last group religious leaders can unite their followers against, now that inter-racial marriage is no longer illegal and racial discrimination is over.
edit: Alright, over is a bad word to use. It would be better to say now that racial discrimination is no longer legal/accepted.

What about atheists?

[–]p4r4is0 10 points11 points ago

Here in the Philippines us atheists are still considered sub-human by the majority regardless of their chosen faith. The warring groups of different beliefs can put up a united front when they deal with atheists. Its good to know they can be united in hating one thing.

Atheists are actually the biggest threat to religion, because we make logical, consistent, reasonable points. We expose hypocrisy, we drag inconsistency back out, screaming, into the light of awareness.

Sounds like what a christian would say.

Atheists most recently are viewed worse than gays in the US n_n;. I think one survey had levels of atheist trust in same region as convicted rapists... yeah

[–]WellHeresMyFourthAcc 1 point2 points ago

Yep. Saw that article on FriendlyAtheist, but I do think the conclusions are a bit shaky. The tactic used in the survey (that particular fallacy) has been shown to produce unreliable results as it exploits people's stupidity by not being straightforward. (I'm more against the wording than against the actual conclusions- of course people view us negatively as a demographic, but the "less trusted than rapists" part is a bit stretching it- people find it likely for untrustworthy members of their community to be atheists, but probably don't exactly view us as worse than rapists).

Mexicans are viewed way worse than both of them put together.

Still fucked up though. Fucking ignorant hicks.

Religious leaders get pretty cranky about atheists, still. I mean, what other group has any US President ever said he thinks should not be considered American Citizens: Atheists. George Herbert Walker.

[–]neoman4426 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

to be fair, it wouldn't surprise me if he had said it, but I've only ever seen it traced back to one source. if someone in that position said such a thing, I would think at least one other person in attendance would have reported. at the very least someone would have agreed with him. in absence of someone else having reported without using the one guy as a source, or at the very least a recording or something, I'm going to stick to allegedly

[–]DingDongSeven 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

To be fair, and to be honest, please don't go with "allegedly." The man was repeatedly asked, and confronted by atheist organizations, asking him about this.

[–]neoman4426 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Fair enough. I was only going off of what I found with a cursory search, I am open to changing my views when presented with new evidence, or at least evidence I had not personally come across.

[–]DingDongSeven -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I respect that. But just to be clear: so we agree that he said those things about atheists, right?

[–]neoman4426 0 points1 point ago

Upgraded from "allegedly" to "likely" in my mind since i am now going on your word word that other sources exist. I will ammend again after confirming one way or the other once i get around to looking again.

[–]ReDyP[S] 0 points1 point ago

AS A CHRISTIAN ITS MY RIGHT TO PICK AND CHOOSE FROM THE BIBLE WHAT TO BELIEVE AND ACCEPT!

[–][deleted] 10 points11 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

See, the thing that gets me is where the line is drawn.

You look through the Bible at all the rules it demands of you, yet very few people obey ALL of them, yet vehemently defend the FEW they do.

Then if you bring this up, ask them why they're not stoning their brother for being Atheist and they might mention how these rules were created in a different time and things have changed, they might say how this is illegal now or something similar.

But then you have to ask, the Jewish died because of their faith during WWII, they could have renounced their faith and survived, but they didn't because they believed that in doing so they wouldn't get into heaven. So why do 'Christians' ignore these rules just because they're not inkeeping with modern laws?

Surely if this book is all knowing they should be following it to the T, regardless of what they think or what society says, if you want into heaven, you have to kill that heretic of a brother. Yet they don't, and somehow they've convinced themselves that they're still getting into this heaven after blatantly disregarding Gods word just because the times have changed?

It just doesn't work.

[–]MayMT 4 points5 points ago

But then you have to ask, the Jewish died because of their faith during WWII, they could have renounced their faith and survived...

Untrue. Even if a jewish person "renounced" their faith, if you were born to jewish parents or had at least one jew in your family, you were killed or taken away.

But the rest of what you say makes total sense and I agree with you.

[–]leredditffuuu 9 points10 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Haha yeah, the idea that if the Jews renounced they're faith that they would've been free to go would've made a pretty ridiculous story.

"Halt! Icht bien al still Jewish?"

"No, today I guess I'm done being Jewish."

"Exczellent... to zee waiting room with you! Zere vill be coffee and donutz along vith your new ID card!"

This basically sums up most people I know that are devout Christians. Grasping onto their religion because it mirrors their bigoted hatred.

I'm sorry that these are the Christians you know. The ones I know, even the ones who disagree with homosexuality, approach homosexuals with compassion and love, and on a whole, try to show love to everyone.

[–]ReDyP[S] 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Right. But in their minds, they are still going to burn for eternity in the fires of hell. Boy is that ever compassionate and loving.

[–]The_Noisemaker -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The reason for someone going or not going to hell has nothing to do with homosexuality, and is dependent on accepting Jesus' salvation through faith. As Christians, it is our mission to show others the love and compassion to keep them from Hell.

Can a murderer go to heaven, if he accepts "Jesus"? Maybe even the last moment before he dies?

(You probably don't see how you're going to fail yet, but you will. This is going to be all kinds of good fun :D)

[–]The_Noisemaker -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Absolutely. There's even the mention of the thief next to Jesus on the cross. I don't think he murdered anyone, but it's a good example.

You missed the bit where the religious guy claims that all that unpleasant stuff is in the Old Testament and that Jesus made it all better, then the bit where the atheist points out that most of the anti-gay stuff is in the Old Testament and anyway Jesus said it still applied. Also the bit where the religious guy flips out at the atheist for having an idea of what he's talking about and accuses him of being Satan in disguise.

[–]stop_being-a-dick 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I don't think I've ever heard this argument, most homophobes feel comfortable just saying "I don't like gay people."

[–]Graped_in_the_mouth 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

This is an important distinction.

Many, many people who claim biblical support for their views are, really, just looking to justify their pre-existing homophobia - which is likely tied to latent homosexuality, according to one study.

There are plenty of Christians who don't think Women should speak in the church, either.

[–]ModernFreeThinker 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Christians and many other religious groups do not technically hate homosexuals, they are disgusted by them. This is shown in many many scientific studies. This is not to say that the "disgusting" is not a form of bigotry but it is different than the hate engendered vs minorities or other religious groups.

[–]SometimesATroll 2 points3 points ago

Overgeneralizing works both ways. I have met christians who are just fine with homosexuals and are for gay marriage. I have also met christians that really do hate gays.

[–]murph1331 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I've actually never come across a christian person who hates gay people. I don't know why people look at Rick Perry and Westboro and think that religious people are like that.

[–]svullenballe 3 points4 points ago*

I don't know why people call themselves Christian and associate themselves with those nut jobs. They are after all the true Christians following the doctrine to a tee.

[–]zzarch 2 points3 points ago

It's funny how people still try to argue against same sex marriage when the arguments they use against it are almost identical to ones used back then against inter-racial marriage, which didn't work.
