Looking for an image subreddit with minimal rules? Check out /r/images

A place to share interesting photographs and pictures. Feel free to post your own, but please read the rules first (see below), and note that we are not a catch-all for general images (of screenshots, comics, etc.)

Spoiler code

Please mark spoilers like this:

Hover over to read.

Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), weight loss photos, posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. Weight loss photos go in /r/loseit, DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

That is nonsense. The heat makes the lantern lift. It will only return to earth when the flame is extinguished. It is not lit when it returns to earth.

People set off these at all good music festival a few years back. It was quite a sight seeing hundreds of fucked up people trying to set these off. Some wouldn't let them fill up with hot air enough before they let go and they would catch fire floating dangerously close to others unsuspecting heads it was hilarious

There could be a malfunction in the bag (a hole that grows and lets the hot air out) or in the flaming material (that makes it burn with decreased intensity after a while) that lets the lantern go down before the flame is out.

It wouldn't exactly break the laws of physics if somewhere an open flame from one of these touched something flammable and started a fire.

My first thought exactly. Specifically, New Years in Chiang Mai. We made a roof collapse.

In much of SE Asia they light lanterns for celebrations. These lanterns look like the ones you get in Thailand - they are wax rings soaked in fuel with a simple paper 'balloon'. You buy them from vendors all over the place.

These are actually very popular in the UK now and thousands get released on new years eve but there has also began a tradition of releasing them in memorial when people die in tragic circumstances for instance when a girl near me in Swindon was murdered last year.

I was at a wedding recently where they released these. In a field. surrounded by pine forests. One of them very nearly got stuck in the tree branches. I was amazed when there was no reports of forest fires the next day.

Apparently they got permission from the fire department and everything, but it stills seems so dangerous.

...Didn't stop me from keeping some extras in my trunk, though.

My parents once lit one of those lanterns in our garden...It ascended directly into our neighbor's tree. My father then frantically looked for the garden hose, and grabbed a 1m long piece of hose that was just lying there, and ran to the tree with it...What a hilarious evening that was.

I've set off a couple of them and as long as you make sure there are no holes or tears in the bag, aren't near any trees and allow it to fill fully with hot air there isn't that much that can go wrong with them. They are far less dangerous than fireworks anyhow.

Living in southern california the only days we ever got off of school where when the wild fires were so extreme that it wasnt safe to go outside. Fire days > snow days.

Australia is either flooded or on fire most of the year. Makes me feel like Bear Grylls.

I would love to send one of those off in my neighborhood. I could set the whole valley on fire.

Actually it's probably better that I didn't.
