So the king gave the order, and they brought Daniel and threw him into the lions’ den. The king said to Daniel, “May your God, whom you serve continually, rescue you!”

A Roman man takes his son to the Colosseum for the first time. During the event Christians are tossed into the ring with several lions. Seeing this, the boy is shocked and asks his father why they would do such a thing.

"What's the matter? They're just Christians."

"I know! Why can't they find anything better for those poor lions to eat? They might get sick!"

I laughed and then I was sad for the sheep. Then I read the comment saying that was actually super sheep flying in to save the day. And then I realized I'd rather have the comforting lie than the dead sheep. So yay for super sheep.

[–]Kilane 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I felt bad for the sheep as well but then I realized throwing him was probably the best for him. This way he'll die on impact instead of from being ripped apart by lions.

Unless you meant him dying in general but I figure lions gotta eat.

[–]Moonburn 15 points16 points ago

More likely the sheep will be crippled on impact from that height.

[–]morespamforya 4 points5 points ago

I don't get it, when those lions are fed with meat, animals also had to die for that meat to be extracted.

Not seeing that process doesn't mean that it didn't happen.

People usually like to think killing animals and delicious meat are 2 mutually exclusive things, it's just baffling.

[–]Ebbing 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

In nature, lions kill their pray by suffocating it, not tearing it apart. Obviously these lions were raised exclusively in captivity and/or in a too large number, therefore the pray suffers unnecessarily. I find this barbaric.

Aw, I thought of the Supersheep out of worms... that way it'd completely destroy the lions... cause lions are too muscled which is more dense than the fat sheep therefore cannot fly.

Honestly, I'm a Christian, and while I'm not "conservative" per se I still enjoy Reddit a lot even though I do find some of the stuff on /r/atheism...not offensive, really, a lot of it's pretty damn funny....it just kinda hurts me sometimes, because it makes me feel as though it's impossible to have Christian beliefs and be an intelligent person both at the same time. But I still love Reddit. So hopefully your friend will be o. _^ (I'm pretty drunk now, sorry if any of this doesn't make sense.) (BTW, totally in favor of gay marriage/love gay people/not judgmental at all/various other disclaimers.)

[–]bodaciousbilly 47 points48 points ago

It only makes me mad when I feel lumped into a category of people I also think are stupid and wrong. So as a Catholic being lumped with fanatic bible-belters, that's basically every time.

[–]adrianmonk 32 points33 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

As an atheist, that's how I feel about /r/atheism. I hope people never associate me with the kinds of attitudes I see there, but I'm afraid they will.

[–]Tonx86 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

As an avid member of the atheist club, I feel you've just jumped into the same cycles you're criticizing. Lumping all theists into one big group is just as bad as lumping all the atheists into one intolerant circlejerk. There are fanatics on both sides.

[–]bodaciousbilly 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Well as soon as I hear an atheist say they don't like /r/atheism then they're alright in my book.

[–]I_RAPE_PEOPLE_II 9 points10 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Wait, so what types of posts offend you? The Facebook ones are 99% of the time fake, so we can exclude those.

[–]bodaciousbilly 9 points10 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Well, it's a little hard to explain because it's so specific, and it's about different things every time. What offends me is when a meme/post/comment or whathaveyou asserts something about religion or Christianity that is completely incorrect, and then makes fun of them for being stupid/dumb/whathaveyou. This is generally my reaction, and it's usually not worth arguing about.

That and when a post isn't really a situation of some religious nut or something, and instead is just blatantly offensive/insulting, and not really that funny. Again, there's not really a specific type, it can be any kind of post.

[–]I_RAPE_PEOPLE_II 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Comments are the personal representation of someone's opinions, who happens to also be an atheist. I don't see how a comment would matter in any regard. What type of misrepresentation of their beliefs are we talking about? There is a source for Christian's beliefs; the bible. So I suppose it would be very difficult to misrepresent their beliefs. When you only hold the belief in Christ dying for all your sins sent by his father who is really Him, I would have no problem saying that's ridiculous. Everything is worth arguing about, we're challenging people's beliefs, if they hold offense to it, then who fucking cares?

It sounds a lot like during the civil rights movements when people that weren't racist were being apologetic towards racists. They would use the argument of "people are disrespecting my beliefs, that's so offensive/insulting I should be allowed to discriminate against another human being".

[–]bodaciousbilly -2 points-1 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You know, it probably wasn't comments themselves, but comments on a front-page image/meme/whatever that is incorrect. And there are many interpretations of the Bible, and not all of the religion comes from the Bible. For Catholicism at least, there are oral traditions and teachings on faith and morals that come from the Pope, as well as theological study done by centuries of monks.

It's all very complex and philosophical, and more often than not if someone attempts to condense it into "bite size" meme form, they get it wrong. Usually though they're just making fun of what some wacky protestant denomination says Catholics don't agree with.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

you know just the other day there was a post comparing tim tebow to pat tilman. It was so ridiculous and pretty much epitomizes everything I hate about r/atheism, even as an atheist. Or that comic that guy made about giving a homeless man shit because he had the audacity to say "thank you and god bless". I grew up in rural Indiana, so a lot of facebook friends/relatives are conservative christians- I mean a vast majority. Most of the people are educated and intelligent but just have the wrong ideas drilled into their heads by Fox News and others.

[–]I_RAPE_PEOPLE_II 0 points1 point ago

Oh, I see. So they grew up with their parents thinking the same thing, so they began to believe in the same idea their parents did?

Do any of them have careers in higher technologies (physics, engineering, chemistry, biology, computer science)?

[–]redbeardo 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's totally possible to be intelligent and hold a higher job and yet believe all Muslims are terrorists and gay people are ruining the country. My facebook posts aren't pretty and lame to put into imgur, but I do assure you that there are people out here who want to outlaw all religions but Christianity and are not quiet about it. Think about Newt Gringrich- people are voting for him in polls. People are voting. for him.

[–]il0veserpents 0 points1 point ago

[–]ExogenBreach 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

because it makes me feel as though it's impossible to have Christian beliefs and be an intelligent person both at the same time.

I know this might make me sound like one of those /r/atheism evangelists,* but if this is how you feel, maybe you should really, honestly, consider the possibility that sheep herders from the bronze age might not actually have the most accurate explanation for the origin of life and the universe?

I have never been religious, I had the benefit of growing up in a country where religion isn't a big part of our society, so I can't say I know what you're going through. But I know a lot of people who have gone through the "deconversion" process, and as far as they have shared with me, they feel liberated, as if the world finally makes sense. Cognitive dissonance is a huge weight to carry.

*I unsubbed from /r/atheism, but not because I necessarily disagreed with them. Just because I was sick of reading so much constant rage.

[–]Ikarus3426 -3 points-2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I just don't get the point of r/atheism...it's a group about people that agree on not believing in something. There's really no collective feeling or discussion to be had other than retarded Christianity jokes...sure it's funny at first, but it got pretty old for me.

[–]zombicidalscientist 43 points44 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

/r/atheism has a lot of purposes, most of which fall under the catch-all purpose of "we want to talk about atheist stuff with other atheists".

I live in the south and work in a place where, if I were to reveal I was an atheist to my co-workers, I would be unwanted by at least 50% of them. These are people that listen to praise/worship music on their speakers, post pictures of children they sponsor on the walls of their cubicle, walk around the office quoting scripture. These are people that would absolutely think less of me if they knew I was an atheist. Some have taken sick days to avoid a simple hour long halloween party. I work in a service position for these people and wouldn't be able to do my job if they acted differently toward me as an atheist. Granted, I don't think religion has any place in the office but that's clearly not how they feel. There aren't too many places where I can go and have people empathize with that position.

I grew up christian and was an evangelical christian until I was about 19. I bugged my friends about their salvation, went to christian youth leadership training, christian youth festivals. I went through high school believing that any lustful thoughts were evil and I needed to basically just avoid women altogether. As an atheist now, I feel like the adults in my life at the time shaped my childhood in a way that was at best disruptive and at worst destructive. There aren't a ton of other people that can empathize or even understand that outside of other atheists who experienced a similar childhood.

At one point I was a very weak Christian who had basically completely disconnected with the church. I tried to shoehorn God into every gap available. I tried to reconcile the creation myth with evolution. I tried to reconcile the massive amount of contradictions in the bible. I tried to reconcile my feelings with the Church's various social stances. I subbed to /r/atheism because I wanted to read more about it. /r/atheism showed me, and many others in the same position, that I could be "Good without God"

Those are just a few of the purposes of /r/atheism. Yes, in the end /r/atheism is a MASSIVE circlejerk but it's a circlejerk with a purpose. As a subreddit we raised $180,000 for Doctors Without Borders. A lot of that was thanks to a massive circlejerk of "I'll donate $0.05 for every upvote" self-posts a few days ago. Again though, a circlejerk with a purpose.

Organized atheism is like a bunch of people getting together every Saturday night for the purpose of not dancing.

[–]frodevil 19 points20 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That would make sense if the majority didn't dance on saturday night, and 'dancing on saturday nights' were a very taboo subject in society that was looked down upon by 80% of the country...but it's not. Nice shit analogy bro.

[–]cshsus 18 points19 points ago

You are right. Those evil non dancers make me sick, they should die.

Everybody should really dance everyday. If they do not listen to the dance teachers, where do they get their morals? Why is it so hard to obey the dance teachers?

I could never vote a non-dancer, in fact they should not be even citizens. They are even against the war against the jazz dancers.

[–]MyriPlanet -2 points-1 points ago

I can't think of a way to say this without coming off as kind of a dick, so, please try and read it with the fact that I am not trying to be rude in mind. I'm not here to start an argument, only to clarify a misconception.

As a particularly 'enthusiastic' atheist, I don't think it's possible to be religious and intelligent... at the same time. Which isn't to say as the same person.

Basically, you could be absolutely brilliant at whatever it is you do, but when being religious, that intelligence is put on the back burner, because a lot of thought has to be suspended to have faith.

Essentially, it doesn't make someone a complete idiot, but I can't ever say it's smart to assume that people come back from the dead, or that bread becomes the flesh of a man from the iron age.

Lets use another example, say: Vaccines. The anti-vacc people make unscientific, emotional claims, and generally we like to laugh at them for it.

That isn't to say, someone who is anti-vacc is a complete idiot, or that they're a bad person, it's just to say that they hold an opinion which people educated in the matter consider to be foolish.

And that is how we tend to see 'faith'. Not as a marker that you're an idiot, but that you're a person who happens to hold a rather silly belief. We like to mock the belief, not the person; people can change their mind in the face of evidence.

[–]sje46 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

As a particularly 'enthusiastic' atheist, I don't think it's possible to be religious and intelligent... at the same time. Which isn't to say as the same person.

That isn't how intelligence works. You don't become stupid when you have an uninformed or "dumb" opinion. Intelligence is much more (but not totally) static than that. It doesn't change throughout the day. Intelligence is about potential. Like, if you put your mind to it, what can you accomplish, cognitively?

But yes, for some things, people don't really think them through well. People become attached to opinions simply because it helps them emotionally, or they're emotionally attached in some way. Look at Bill Maher...usually a pretty smart guy, but, as you say, is anti-vac. Hell, I'd argue that a few conservative pundits we hate are intelligent...but really, really emotionally attached to the wrong thing, or simply saying it for money/viewership (Bill O'Reilly).

I just don't think it's useful to say "Christians are stupid" with your definition of intelligence in mind. It's way too inflammatory. I know plenty of smart Christians, and to call them stupid just because they believe in a bunch of wrong things is really just ignorant. We must be honest with each other. We mustn't hijack language for political purposes. Hijacking language is what the anti-atheists do when they say "atheism is just another religion". That's basically taking a rather unimportant feature shared between some atheists and Christians (passion, which isn't a bad thing), using that as a definition for a word, and then using that word to imply that the religious and atheists are "the same thing" and therefore, the atheists can't criticize the religious because it's hypocritical. Even though the only important thing shared is passion, which isn't typically what atheists criticize Christians for.

Right.

That's hijacking language. And when you redefine the word "intelligent" to your rather odd definition, that's basically you just giving yourself an excuse to call the religious dumb. We shouldn't manipulate language like that. Christians are average intelligence...some smart, some dumb.

[–]MyriPlanet 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

What I mean is this:

It's not intelligent (wise, smart, logical) to be a Christian.

But being a Christian does not mean you're inherently unintelligent.

I see it rather like how we shut our brain off at a movie: We don't think about all the evidence that Harry Potter isn't real, because it's fun to pretend for an hour or so and just enjoy the show.

It's a rather difficult thing to voice, because most people seem to think that if you call something they do stupid, you think they're a stupid person, when this isn't always the case.

You can be intelligent and do stupid things. I'd wager we all do something other people would consider dumb.

[–]sje46 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I know what you mean. You shouldn't use the word "intelligent" that way, though. When you "shut off" your brain, that doesn't make you less intelligent..it just means you're currently not using a certain amount of potential.

I get what you're saying, but calling them dumb is just too inflammatory. It implies you think they're always dumb, which is simply not true. This is why he said

it just kinda hurts me sometimes, because it makes me feel as though it's impossible to have Christian beliefs and be an intelligent person both at the same time.

That isn't right. And your insistence on using the term "dumb" to describe Christians like that indicates that you just really want to call them dumb for some reason. Why not just use a sensible definition?

[–]egglipse 0 points1 point ago*

That isn't how intelligence works.

Partially it is. There are thinking skills like critical thinking, open mindedness. Ability to detect fallacies and spot weak arguments. Ability to verify claims. Curiosity to learn more. Knowledge about our mental biases, which is essential if you want to think more accurately.

One may be very intelligent, but lack some of those, which removes a lot of the potential. A bit like having a great knife, but not sharpening it. In that case even a poor but sharpened knife is better.

Of course there are also the religious defense mechanisms that try to prevent people from thinking about the religion critically, and try to make people self censor their own thinking. Glorifying blind faith is one of those. You are rewarded with eternal life if you don't think, and punished with hell if you do.

As a former conservative and Christian, it really doesn't take long for the internet to change you.

As still a conservative (however never a Christian) I can assure you that not everyone is as malleable as you.

I want you to know I appreciate what you have said, but also in the way you said it. Malleable was so appropriately used. I guess that's all.

Yeah, I consider myself more conservative and have been a long time internet users. I tend to find the internet full of emotional attacks on people rather than opinion changing information. From both sides.

Been around Reddit for a while now, and all of my friends are atheist liberals, hasn't changed me one bit either; still as conservative and Christian as ever. Heck, I was never bothered by it until the past six months or so when r/atheism stopped putting out interesting content and changed to blatant, mindless Christian bashing in every single post. It's too bad really, because I really enjoyed it about a year ago.

[–]alchemeron 6 points7 points ago

By all means let's be open-minded, but not so open-minded that our brains drop out.

You can have such an open mind that it is too porous to hold a conviction.

The thing about truisms is that they all sound true. If you never close your mind on a subject, what good is your opinion?

[–]alchemeron 0 points1 point ago

Not sure if you're referring to your Reddit experience or not, but I've got nearly double your current time on Reddit and haven't really been changed by the internet.

Maybe it's just you. Maybe it's just me. Call me stubborn, but I haven't changed my conservative views and I'm still a Christian.

Food for thought.

The sheep was a condemned murderer. Also he had cancer

[–]danth 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yep, and it's not okay just because lions hunt prey animals in the wild. That sheep/lamb/whatever would have a chance to run away in the wild, or avoid lions altogether. And if it did get caught, it would be suffocated by one lion while the others watched. These captive lions are probably trained to rip their food apart. It's barbaric.

[–]DWells55 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Even more so, it doesn't matter if what would've happened in the wild was ten times more brutal. The fact is that the sheep was no longer in the wild, and people controlled its fate. The sheep could've easily been killed in a far more humane manner first instead of being forced to suffer for others' amusement.
