In Spain it's also somewhat frowned upon to bear the flag or to be outwardly nationalistic, except in soccer matches, as it's associated with Franco's dictatorship.

Translation - redneck/chav, also the southern cross.

[–]Farisr9k 3 points4 points ago

The southern cross tattooed.

Look at this, if you dare.

It pretty much implies racism, much like displaying a confederate flag in America.

Poor Australian Astronomers!

[–]Phallic 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The fucked up thing is it wasn't that long ago that brandishing the Australian flag was seen as trashy, and that flag waving was a very American thing that didn't really fit in with Australia's "no worries" culture. It involved taking yourself a bit too seriously for the Australian psyche to be comfortable with.

Look how far we've come. Backwards. Now there are dickheads draping themselves in the thing everywhere.

It's a good point. Where do you see the English flag other than sports games? EDL rallies and things like that. Anything official where people want to show pride - like the royal wedding - everyone has British flags.

[–]CptHaddock 22 points23 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

People often point to the Scottish flag being more widely accepted at this point, and it's true, but as a Scot I would still associate a flag waver here with SNP tendencies and anti-English sentiment.

[–]Mashulace 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Displaying a Union Flag without good reason is regarded as questionable as well.

[–]ghettoperson 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It would be thought of as strange, as people would wonder why you were flying it. However it doesn't have the far right nationalistic connotations that the English flag does.

[–]squigs 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Well, he Royal wedding is a British event. And really we English don't consider the flag as hugely representative of our our country in the same way as the Americans do. Traditionally the symbol was The Queen, although overt royalism is seem as a little outdated these days. We don't really have a national symbol.

What is something of a shame is that we can't celebrate St. Georges day without racist EDL idiots turning it into something that most of us consider un-british.

I definitely have never seen anyone in Spain wear anything that simply says "España" on it, even in regards to the national soccer team. This seems to be as true in Spain proper as Catalonia.

havent they already to some degree? if you see someone with a us flag on their car, i bet you already assume the car is a pickup truck, and i bet you would make some assumptions that the driver is sternly opposed to mexican immigration into the states.

I mean not to disparage the act of displaying one's flag, but to discuss the assumptions that are made about those who do.

America's done that too. Here in Ohio, they vacated parts of (I think it was) Youngstown? Because it was causing lots of lost money to maintain services for the very low population of people still living there, so the city would offer incentives to, as they put it, "get the fuck out"

No wonder they got along with Japan...

[–]philip1201 7 points8 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Actually it's the other way around. When the Japanese got out of their Edo phase and looked at what the Europeans had been up to in their 265 year seclusion, they saw they didn't go from guns to self-annihilation as expected, but instead had mechanisation and steam engines and shit. So the Japanese leadership came together and decided that shutting yourself out from the world probably wasn't a good idea, so instead they looked at Europe to see what they did properly.

The switch of power, from the Tokugawa Shogunate of the Edo period to the Empire of the Rising Sun occurred in 1868 with the establishment of a new emperor. Shortly afterward, in 1870 and 1871, the until then loose alliance of German fiefdoms united under a Prussian banner and utterly wiped the floor with the French, who until then were seen as the greatest power in continental Europe, because of Napoleon. The Japanese, seeing this rapid unification, modernisation, and growth to military power, were so impressed they basically decided to make German efficiency part of their culture. Much of the Japanese government and pre-WW2 military is designed after German examples.

So basically Japan as a state decided that Edo seclusion was philosophically wrong, so they went with the most successful alternative philosophy they could find: The German third second Reich.

It's weird how you want to eat your cake an have it, too. Whenever the federal goverment does something you don't like, you say "HEY WE CAN LEAVE WHENEVER" but then when you realize that the only way you can continue to exist is through federal funding it's like "hey, you know, the real texas style is making peace"

Either get out or shut the fuck up. It isn't hard.

Texas is like a college student living at home with their parents working a shit job, but because the parents pay for everything the kid always has money for shit like movies and videogames. Because he doesn't think about the fact that if he actually lived on his own he'd be fucked, he walks around like "GOD I HAVE SO MUCH MONEY"

And in addition to being an ungrateful fuck, whenever there's some rule like "honey, I'm going to need you to pick up grandma" he shoots back with "HEY I CAN LEAVE ANYTIME I WANT"

[–]mehum 8 points9 points ago

Not really hatred, more like utter disdain. Japan was the only country in NE Asia that wasn't a vassal state to China, and refused to deal with anyone if possible. China thought they were the centre of the world (such a popular fallacy through the ages) and Japan thought their emperor was a god.

If we're playing the numbers game look at the UK. Massacres over North America, Africa and Asia. In India alone there were a couple of famines that killed well into the millions. And let's not forget that while the Irish we're starving, the government was exporting what little crops didn't fail out of Ireland. And it all happened under the Union Jack.

[–]Learnincurve 4 points5 points ago

Any anger the Irish have over the potato famine is nothing compared to the sheer venom, hate, and rage that erupts when you use the code words "Oliver Cromwell"

[–]Dinsfire 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

As an English person I always find it odd when fellow English people go on about how fantastic Cromwell was. I mean, we voted him as one of the top ten Britons of all time... His Republicanism was really only a side effect of his religious mania and megalomania, and the brutality in Ireland was beyond horrific.

I'm a staunch republican nowadays but would have been a cavalier without a second thought back then, fuck Oliver Cromwell.

[–]Learnincurve 1 point2 points ago

He absolutely fucked over everything he touched, arguably Cromwell is one of the reasons America has so much religion today as well, Palin and the tea party, Cromwell's fault. Oh it's crazy. To bring back the original point, the Germans in general take all the heat for WWII. There was also Italy, Austria, Hungary, Slovakia, Romania, Croatia, Bulgaria and discreetly Switzerland and Spain. Basically all of central Europe. This war lasted for 6 years. In comparison with the British.... From the late 18th century to the middle of the 20th, this empire was killing everybody in all corners of the globe (I forgot to mention the Opium Wars that screwed up China for a hundred years). Easily the bloodthirstiest in history (especially deaths to world population). Probably in the hundreds of millions. Yet nowadays, in the public's eyes Germans are about as "bad guys" as you can get when they pale in comparison to what the British did. By the way I have nothing against anybody from the UK and think it's a very cool country (especially London) but its history should be known.

Not really. I think the headline "Russian Nationalism on the Rise" would raise some eyebrows too.

"British Nationalism on the Rise" wouldn't be too popular either. Since "British Nationalism" usually seems to involve a lot of xenophobia.

I think for the entire war, the death toll was between 50-60 million. The Soviet Union alone lost more than 6 million. Then there were about 6 million more than died in the Halocaust. And millions of German soldiers and civilians. Then the battles in the Pacific, Italy, North Africa, etc.

Just fun facts.

That is exactly how it goes, with our own press being the ones to highlight it (panel 6).

It softened during the 2006 World Championchip (soccer, you barbarian), when our colours were displayed from everywhere, cars, the cheeks of young girls, ... but the Left wouldn't have it.

Today, we have a more relaxed attitude to our flag. "Regular" people can display it without being instantly flagged (heh) as a nazi. Leftwing activist groups still wont have it, and that is why I put "regular" in quotes before.

[–]lorj 8 points9 points ago

There also seems to be a similar feeling about waving the Union Flag or St George's Cross around. I think it's attributed to our far-right so everyone else is a bit wary. It's a shame, really.

[–]aido_anto 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

but seriously, i don't get the entire point of nationalism in the first place. pride to me is an abstract term of convoluted self importance and it never did anyone any good. i mean, i'm from australia but i don't feel australian because what's the point? i guess it can symbolise a sporting team rather than a nation but other than that it seems odd.

[–]Eulenspiegel74 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Germans were indoctrinated (that a word?) for decades not to feel proud of their country. "Pride" was something to be avoided, it was too similar to what the Nazis preached.

tl;dr: we were told not to be too proud to be german, and patriotism was a bad thing.

As I said, that changed in 2006 when we hosted the World Cup. I remember that time VIVIDLY. It was a great party, people wore their colours but partied with people from other countries, continents.

I remember one game in my hometown, Japan vs Australia (yes). There were some tourists from Japan, really stereotypical with cameras, being hijacked by drunk (not stereotypical, because all fans were drunk) australian fans. They took photographs together, bewildered Japanese with barely-standing Australians.

On the day of the game I remember the fans of the Australian team moving towards the stadium. I have never in my life seen so many drunk but orderly people with stuffed kangaroos walking in one mob. It was one party in yellow and green.

Am I rambling? I am, ain't I?

I've always thought the taboo subject of being German and actually being proud of your country would make a fascinating documentary.

[–]AeBeeEll 55 points56 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah, and the sick thing is that they have so many things in their history that they should be proud of, but it's all overshadowed by a very ugly but very brief period in their history.

It reminds me of the old joke: "You spend your life building bridges and no one calls you bridge-builder; you spend your life fighting crime and no one calls you crime-fighter; but you fuck one goat . . . "

[–]NancyGracesTesticles 16 points17 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Technically, Germany fucked two goats. And both times, they fucked those goats so hard that it destroyed the entire farm. Prior to that, they spent the years around unification trying out their goat fucking skills among selected neighbors.

That's why everyone gets nervous when Germany expresses any kind of interest in goats.

I think my analogy just went way off of the rails.

[–]BaconatedGrapefruit 65 points66 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

No, Germany fucked one goat by itself (WW2). WW1 Was a case of Europe collectively fucking a goat together, balls touching and bro-rage breaking out. Germany just got blamed for it in the end.

I agree. A good friend of mine is from Germany (26M) and when we were in school any time his nationality got brought up there was always someone who would go for an easy jab at his nationality. I'm sure he's proud of his roots, but probably would find it difficult to express in western countries for this reason. I always maintain that while some characteristics can be passed down through society, a previous generations problems should not reflect today's generation.

As an side, he's probably one of the nicest guys I've ever met and the only time I got to talk with someone about their grandfather having fought on the opposing side of the war.

[–]DrChadKroegerMD 2 points3 points ago

I think the same about American nationalism. The right in American mixes a unique brand of fierce nationalism with anti-federalism and a fear of centralization that seems contradictory, but fascinating.

After several world cups and euro championships I have only this to say about the fans I met. (lets pretend we meet all of them only in a one pub in one night)

Netherlander: Friendly and fun

Danish: Friendly and fun

Germany: Friendly and fun... Lets drink a bit.

French: Friendly and fun... talk shit about you behind your back in French.

England: Wearing a shirt of the latest "In" striker and talk about how they are going to win because of him and their "excellent" team as told by the SUN and the "TIMES" and other shitty publications.

Germany: Getting drunk

Italy: Calm, quiet and only one of them is wearing an old "Italia" shirt. Home by 10.

Irish: "We have an Italian coach AND we were cheated!" Manage the "Irish" pub. Don't own it.

British: "There were 10 german bombers in the air..."

Greeks: "We won 2004!!!!!"*

Russians: One angry guy in a suit and a bleach blond bimbo start yelling about domination and everyone else in the group secretly talks to you about foreign citizenship.

Spanish: Having fun! (just don't talk about the differences between the clubs.)

Croatia: We are good people, but look at what they did to us! Serbia: I was born in USA.

British: "You can never write of the Germans!"... "there were 8 German bombers!..."

I'll write more if you guys are interested. Should I go on?

I think it's much more that we Germans are suspicious about other countries national pride. Especially stuff like the Pledge of Allegiance of the USA is totally foreign to us, at least the younger generations. And it really still feels so... suspicious to me. I don't think that a national idenfication and cultural identity are bad things, they are pretty much necessary, but this type of pledge appears almost ancient and dangerously nationalist.

If I could speak german (I know some, but not enough to get by) then I would love to move there, they have strong manufacturing and engineering sectors which are my main interests. The mountainous landscape is beautiful and the climate is milder. There is also better public transport including high speed rail to other countries.
Public heathcare and my inability to speak german are the main things which hold me back.
