Coconut crabs are very cool. When I was staying in Efate in the Vanuatu Islands, we would see them from time to time. They don't seem very common these days, due to their tastiness (and supposed aphrodisiac properties). They are amazing climbers - not something you'd immediately associate with a giant crab. One friend woke up in the middle of the night, third floor of a treehouse bungalow, to find a coconut crab devouring a loaf of bread on the kitchen table. I guess that's why they're called Robber Crabs.

Thomas Hale Streets reports a trick used by Micronesians of the Line Islands to get a coconut crab to loosen its grip: "It may be interesting to know that in such a dilemma a gentle titillation of the under soft parts of the body with any light material will cause the crab to loosen its hold."

This was taken on Christmas Island (Australia) where they are known as robber crabs - they are non-aggressive and large ones like this would be 80-90 years old.
