From left to right:

John Lennon (Rickenbacker 325c on shoulder) John's Gibson j-160E (Orginally bought by Geroge Harrison, but accidentally switched early on) John's VOX "Super-Beatle" 100watt amplifier

Ringo Starr (Ludwig 'Down Beat' Black Oyster Pearl 4 piece kit)

George Harrison's 1964 Rickenbacker 360-12 fire-glo (on stand) George Harrison's 1963? Gretsch 6119 Tennessean (lying on floor)

Paul McCartney (1961 Hofner 500/1 bass on shoulder) Paul McCartney's Vox Bass Amps????? Paul McCartney's 1963 Hofner 500/1 bass (on stand behind bass amps)

Some sort of a a Piano Mic'd (played by Paul McCartney) A Really Lucky Chair

George Harrison's amplifier (looks more like a Fender head and speaker cabinent rather than a VOX AC-30 combo) George Harrison (1962 Gretsch 6122 Country Gentleman on shoulder)

Clearly an Arena Show of somesort, but the wrong uniforms and no keyboard rules out Shea Stadium

The Amplifiers and Ringo's Drums are mic'd which gives that away, plus the stage looks like it was hasitly thrown together, so possibly a baseball stadium.

There would be two Mics for the singers of any given song at the front of the stage, one can see the wires leading to those Mic's.

There wouldn;t be any monitors at the front of the stage. Men were men back then.

Any idea which songs Paul would have been playing piano on in those days?

[–]jakewho 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

As far as I know, Paul never played live piano in those days. They played very short sets (20-25 mins) with mostly upbeat rock songs. I know of one instance where paul played yesterday on acoustic. My guess is that its just a house piano for whatever theater or concert hall they're playing. It doesnt appear to have a microphone on it. There's a stand next to it, but it seems to be propping up the top. How ever I am no expert. Just an obsessive Beatles fan since childhood.

This is from one of the 2 shows on June 20, 1965 at the Palais des Sports in Paris. One of the shows is up on youtube, enjoy: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K_aI9BZU3QI

They don't see to use the piano in this show, maybe they used it in the other one.

They may be old, but sometimes the only tunes that will hit the spot is some Beatles. Nothing replaces the Beatles. Nothing

I will never tire of The Beatles. Their songs never fail to amaze me.

By the way, they affectionately called their amps the "deaf aids".

"I'd like to say thank you on behalf of the group and ourselves, I hope we passed the audition". - end of the album. Gotta love Lennon's antics.

I will say this, musically I'm not a fan of most of the Beatles' work. But sonically, they were pioneers of the industry. And they were masters of pop music. But more relevant to the thread, this image is just fantastic. Maybe my favorite Beatles pic.

Pink Floyd likes to take credit as pioneers in audio engineering, but the more you listen to The Beatles the more you see how much technique they were emulating. Robert Fripp was heavily influenced by their studio work too.

Cry Baby Cry is one of my favorite of their soundscapes.

I just want to hear some of The Beatles work from before they were spit-shined and sold to the public as a wholesome everyband.

[–]Efishient 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

See if you like this. Before The Beatles totally formed, they were called The Quarrymen (a band the John started, and which Paul and George later joined with Colin Hanton on drums and John Lowe on piano). I think it's great, but I'm absolutely biased toward anything having to do with The Beatles.

Yea that's what I figured. When I play drums in a garage by the end of the song my bass drum is across the room from me. I would usually just but something heavy in front of it.

None the less, this is a beautiful photo. All the 1/4 inch cords tangled around, pedals, amps and other instruments create a visual layer of their sound. Honing an art the way they did is absolutely stunning, naturally. Amazing people!

[–]southamerican_man 3 points4 points ago

Well back in those days there were no pedals or rack mounted equipment... I would say that was the standard.

But shit the could have gotten those cables in a bunch and tie them... Now I know way the stayed in one spot when they played on TV, they would've tripped if they moved on stage!

[–]iamadogforreal 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I see two amp pedals in that photo.

I suspect the early Beatles experience was truly as frantic, cheap, and out of control as the various biographies describe. This setup doesnt surprise me one bit.
