Yes, in the wild golf balls are known to react in rubbery sort of fashions. You just can't get this natural response in domestic or captive golf balls.

I'm not gonna lie, I was wincing at the end expecting it to blow up in my face and send shrapnel into my eyes. Then I remembered it was a movie...

It's supposed to be Alt + 3232 on the numpad, but on Windows 7 all you get is á.

No problem, just let me know if you figure out how to do it on W7.

yes... or I mean, no yes. Or... true.

The GIF is real.

Materials behave differently to equal amounts of stress depending on the time over which it is applied. IE: If the stress is applied slowly as in the youtube video it will have a much lower rupture point than if the stress occurs over a few microseconds as in the GIF. The GIF could be real...

This is actually EXACTLY how golf balls behave. After all, aside from the shell, they're really just rubber. If they are hit hard enough by a golf club or shot into a wall, this is a normal response.

[–]LettersFromTheSky 10 points11 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

TIL golf balls are rubber and not plastic.

[–]Checkers10160 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Well actually the outside IS plastic, but the inside is rubber

[–]ForgettableUsername 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

So, are they plastic or rubber?

[–]PubLiic 0 points1 point ago

I don't know if it stretches to that extent though.

[–]nyjets 0 points1 point ago

It will if it's moving quickly enough.

[–]Liquidmetal7 18 points19 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It can, depend on quality and property of materials. Golf balls are strongly elastic.

PS: Trust me, i'm an engineer.

PPS: Nice gif lol

Well now you know why it's so goddamn hard to crack a golfball.

It's not solid.

Also, only the really shitty ones are solid.

[–]thenagainmaybenot 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I don't think the word "solid" means what you think it means.

[–]Cullly 11 points12 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I don't think he means the word "solid" as it's used in chemistry. Of course ALL golf balls are "solid", but there is a type of golf ball commonly known as a "solid" golf ball. These are the shitty practice ones that are 1 moulded piece of crap with the standard covering. AKA 2-Piece, but a lot of decent brands make good 2-piece balls also. This term might be UK and Ireland only.

Most decent golf balls are 2-piece, 3-piece, or 4-piece.

Engineer here too and I can vouch for what he's saying. I've done some tests with golf balls in a wind tunnel and some low speed (~120mph) collision tests and although I've never seen them deform THAT much, I don't think it's impossible if they were going fast enough.

[–]PepitoneConQueso 1 point2 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

As a golfer and an engineer, I can tell you a person does not have the ability to make the ball deform like this with a golf club, if you could then ball wouldn't go very far. There are degrees of "softness" when it comes to selecting a ball, and in general the softer the ball the greater the feel and shorter the distance.

I would assume this is a stress test done with an air cannon.

[–]howboutme 5 points6 points ago

Golf ball compression is the proper search term. That specific example you linked seems pretty extreme, but after some searching, it looks like it was shot at 150 MPH.

And just think- the golf ball has done all this before you even hear the sound of it striking the wall.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points ago

That is not how they react when they hit you in head. Trust me on that one.

But that ball has absolutely no spin - none. I realize that this is slow motion, but there should be some. A ball hit that way would have no control at all

[–]Mikerk 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The metal it's hitting has no grooves and is a steep angle. No grooves being the biggest factor. I'm sure it doesn't help that the ball is slamming into it, rather than a club hitting it in a downward motion

[–]canadianbvr 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The rubber core in golf balls is not a soft rubber it's very very hard almost solid in some cases, I've seen plenty of different cores of golf balls while working at a golf course for six years on the grounds crew, I've also accidentally hit a few with a mower, man they get good distance.

[–]dirtymoney 0 points1 point ago

i really dislike the sound of a golf club hitting a golf ball. That is all.
