Sitting here, looking over at an empty cage, this photo makes me depressed. I had gotten a hedgehog about a year ago. It was around 4 or 5 years old and neglected, so needless to say it wasn't the friendliest of pets. She would curl up and hiss at me if I so much as walked by the cage. I put one of my shirts in her cage for her to get used to my scent. She began to stop hissing as much. Back in October the weather shifted and she refused to eat and started to wobble. I panicked and found out she was trying to hibernate which can actually be very hazardous to them so I bought a space heater to warm up her cage. She returned to normal, yet was still somewhat dismissive of me. The past few weeks she became very docile and would cuddle up next to my leg when I was playing video games and was as sweet as can be. Then suddenly Saturday, after going out to run some quick errands, I discovered that she had passed away.

I'm so sorry! You were lovely to adopt her and she was lucky to have had you. Remember the good parts. You gave her a great home.

4/5 years is actually good innings for a hedgehog, kudos to you for adopting her.

I am so sorry. I want to down vote because this makes me sad, but I up vote instead.

Freaking ADORABLE! I have a Hedgehog myself. His name is Wash. :)

Also, it's dangerous to bathe Hedgehogs like that. Their skin can become easily irritated by the large amount of soap.

You're supposed to take a small amount of soap and lather it onto a toothbrush, then gently brush his spines with the grain.

And even then, you're only supposed to wash them if they are very dirty.

Hope this helps anyone that is looking into getting a Hedgehog!

That's what I used to do with my little Loki.

You are such a good pet owner :)

[–]cyrilio 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

So how hard is it to keep a hedgehog as a pet? It seems like a lot of work.

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It can be, to take good care of one (anyone can do the bare minimum to take care of any pet, and most do, unfortunately). The hedgehog care sheet at hedgehogclub.com and the information at mihog.org (the International Hedgehog Association and Michigan Hedgehog Owners Group, respectively) have detailed information for taking good care of hedgehogs.

They are actually REALLY easy! Unless you don't like bugs...

They pretty much keep to themselves. In fact, they prefer being left alone for the most part. They are very curious animals, too!

They only like to be held if you do it often, other than that they will try to escape (much to your dismay), so if you want to hold them often, they can be a lot of work.

They eat a kind of kibble that looks like cat kibble, but it has insect proteins in it. They are insectivores, and require fresh bugs every 2-3 days. I usually feed him large meal worms, as they are easy to keep for long periods (20-25 days) and you don't have to catch them like crickets, or other winged insects.

It's important to NOT give them infinite insect supplies, because they are very gluttonous, and can give themselves protein poisoning. They will also get fat if you put too much kibble into their food dish.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Hedgehogs don't need insects, although they do love them, at least the ones who know what they are. Some go so long without seeing one that they don't recognize it as food.

They aren't exactly easy to keep either. If you don't socialize them every day, for instance, they become standoffish, which makes clipping their toenails next to impossible (some people end up taking their hedgehog to the vet and having it anaesthetized, which is dangerous in and of itself, just to clip nails).

[–]MrMunchkin 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That's why you're supposed to give them a ramp with extra fine sand paper. OR, if you have a rat/chinchilla wheel like I do, you can line it with extra fine sand paper! It doesn't hurt their fleshy bits, and it keeps their nails trimmed VERY well.

In fact, my hedgehog LOVES sand paper. You could equate it to a cat using a scratching post.

And you are correct, they do not need insects, they just need the proteins. But they fucking LOVE eating insects (at least mine does)

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Um, what? You're kidding, right? Hedgehogs run on the pads of their feet. Under no circumstances should they be running on sandpaper.

[–]MrMunchkin 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Call any exotic vet's office, they will tell you it's safe as long as you make sure they aren't doing it excessively.

http://www.petinfo4u.com/hedgehog.htm

http://www.well.com/~jelena/hedgehogcare.html

http://www.hedgehogheadquarters.com/secure/accessories.htm

EDIT: Also make sure that it's extra fine sandpaper. If the grit is too high, it IS dangerous.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Ok, you realize that those first two links represent the opinion of exactly two people, right? That anyone can put a webpage up?

As far as exotic vets go, I remember our vet laughing at the idea when we brought it up, as it sounded so ridiculous, so you may want to find another vet. I mean, think about it:

ANYTHING ABRASIVE ENOUGH TO WEAR DOWN HARD NAILS IS ABRASIVE ENOUGH TO HURT THE PADS OF THE FEET. HEDGEHOGS DO NOT RUN THE SAME WAY AS OTHER ANIMALS, ON THEIR NAILS.

As far as the breeder's webpage, it's filled with horrible information in my opinion, starting from the very top where she says bottles should be used, which is just plain wrong, as is her statement that wood bedding is ok to use.

Honestly, the Internet is filled with opinions. In fact, you can find breeders, USDA-licensed, who honestly believe that you can dilute or breed out genetic diseases, that inbreeding is ok in the pursuit of special colors or patterns, and other ideas that are just plain ridiculous.

I urge anyone reading to disregard completely MrMunchkin's advice, and instead to read the care pages of the International Hedgehog Association (hedgehogclub.com).

Again: DO NOT USE SANDPAPER WITH HEDGEHOGS.

[–]MrMunchkin 0 points1 point ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Could I have the phone number of your vet? I'd like to verify this.

EDIT: I'd also like to point out that the Internal Hedgehog Association says absolutely NOTHING about sandpaper. They don't even say to not use it.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

They don't say that you shouldn't use your hedgehog for bowling, either. Should they?

Let's have the number of some vets that do think that sandpaper is ok to use with hedgehogs.

[–]litewo 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Besides the obvious concerns about wearing down the pads, doesn't the sandpaper get, um, dirty? I've never met a hedgehog who didn't poop and run at the same time.

[–]MrMunchkin 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yes, it does. I took it out of his wheel because I got tired of changing it out so often.

The ramp is a much easier method, and he freaking LOVES it. Again, it's like a cat scratching post.

[–]litewo 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I've raised two hedgehogs who wouldn't touch insects. They were fine with a low-fat cat food.

[–]MrMunchkin 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Curious, what kind of insects did you feed them? Also, mine is an African Hedgehog, what were yours?

[–]litewo 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I tried mealworms, both live and dead, and crickets. They were scared of the crickets and just pushed the mealworms around for a while.

I have always wanted a hedgehog. After reading this, I want one even more! I have always considered them my spirit animal. I know lame, but still. We would be besties.

Your post made me go 'aaaaaww'

And yes, I am thinking of buying one too =)

[–]Emmy_Isla 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

They're expensive to buy and set up and require a lot of your evening time if you want them to be sociable but they are actually quite cheap to keep in the long run :)

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

They're only cheap if you don't take them to the vet, ever. On average, I've spent about $1,000 per hedgehog over their lifetimes for veterinary care.

[–]Emmy_Isla 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I meant, food, treats, toys, bedding etc.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Vet care should always be included when estimating whether you can afford to keep an animal. Most vets charge extra for seeing 'exotic' pets, including hedgehogs, and finding a vet that has hedgehog experience often means driving further than the closest vet, unless you're lucky. I drive about an hour to see my vet, even though there are plenty of vets between here and there.

My hedgehog was a dick. For those of you looking to get a hedgehog, don't do it.

[–]lesalulu 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

do you mind expanding? I have had a few overtime and always found them charming. Did yours bite or run? Why was he a dick?

[–]katsarerkool -3 points-2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

-For starters, hedgehogs by nature are nocturnal so for the most part he slept all day and if we attempted to touch him he would curl into a ball and do that little shake/quiver thing that stabs your hands if your hand is unfortunate enough to be close-by. -On top of that, when he was awake he was generally antisocial and bit people who tried to hold him without warning. -Also he frequently did that regurgitating licking thing but often left tiny piles of hedgehog vomit on the floor when he was out of his enclosure. -Finally (not really his fault I guess) he became morbidly obese and stopped doing anything. Conclusion- Hedgehogs make lousy pets, mine was a dick.

[–][deleted] 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Hedgehogs are not for everyone, certainly. It sounds more like you didn't know what you were getting yourself into, however, than a problem with the hedgehog.

Unfortunately, thanks to that video game and pictures on the internet, people get hedgehogs without knowing whether or not they really want one, or how to take care of it.

[–]lesalulu -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

interesting, im sorry you had a lame hedgehog. I had one that would sit in my sweatshirt pocket all day if i let it. I suppose they are like dogs and cats, sometimes you gt good ones and sometimes you get bad ones.

[–]gingerrabbit 1 point2 points ago

They should be washed not with soap, but in a soothing oatmeal + water solution which is easily made by soaking raw oatmeal in some water, straining it and using the soft and milky result. Don't make it too thick and be sure there are no bits of oats left in it or they will get stuck to the creatures spines.

Put the hedgehog in a basin, sink or tub with some warm, shallow water in it already. Don't make the water too deep, just enough to get its feet and tummy wet and allow it to keep its head and back well above the water.

Allow it to stand on its feet so it feels safe. Gently run the oatmeal solution over the hedgehog, keeping it out if its eyes and ears, and using a toothbrush, brush lightly with the direction of its spines. Be gentle and move slowly, hedgehogs get frightened if handled too roughly. The oatmeal solution cleans the hedgehog and moisturizes its skin and spines. Wrap it in a clean soft absorbent cloth afterwards to help dry it, but don't use a terrycloth (bath) towel as their spines and claws get stuck in the loops. An old cotton dinner napkin or flatweave kitchen towel works.

If you handle them gently and socialize them well, they can make good pets. If they are scared they just make huffing noises and roll up in ball to protect themselves. They are little creatures and quite conscious that we are much bigger and therefore probably dangerous.

They are nocturnal, so will sleep all day. Don't expect them to be up during daylight hours, they can't do it. They need a cage big enough to roam around a bit when they are awake and a flat surfaced running wheel for exercise, not one with bars and open spaces like mice have.

My boyfriend (now husband) called me at work on my birthday one year and asked if I wanted a baby hedgehog for my birthday. I said no at the time, because we already had two kitties in a smallish apartment, but have always regretted it a little. I'm just not sure I have the time between work, kitties, husband, and now a baby to socialize the little guy sufficiently.
