It's more like "bitch" but curse words in Spanish don't line up exactly with curse words in English, and sometimes you'll have people tell you it means a multitude of things.

I think the word you're looking for is chinga e.g. chinga tu madre literally means "fuck your mother". Be careful with that one on the soccer field.

Puta may mean a lot of things, and it differs from place to place.

Normally in the US you'll here puta as "fuck", because that's what it means in south american spanish. It can also mean bitch, prostitute or may just emphasize something in a negative way, but you'll see that mostly in Spain. South americans would use "ramera" for this connotations, or "reputa" for emphasizing.

The problem behind this is that we us "puta" not only in negative ways, also we use it for emphasis, both negative and positive: "puta suerte la mia" or "que puta suerte" can be used when you have very bad luck, but the later is used also when you get lucky.

EDIT: BTW I have never heard puta used as fuck :S
