At least let us keep the unicorns!
[–]Siethron 3 points4 points5 points 9 months ago
YES, I mean a flying spaghetti monster is one thing, but unicorns ARE real.
[–]tastytang 0 points1 point2 points 9 months ago
It is well known that the unicorns were born procrastinators, and were late to the Ark due to goofing off with all the dinosaurs.
[–]IsThisOffensive 0 points1 point2 points 9 months ago
The most depressing thing is that I know christian people who try to tell me that I can't prove unicorns don't exist...
[–]Wulfricbunny 0 points1 point2 points 9 months ago
Take god, leave the unicorn.
[–]AlphaHotel_94 4 points5 points6 points 9 months ago
Here's the link to the shirt design from the SMBC store.
[–]PKMKII 3 points4 points5 points 9 months ago
Hey, genetic engineering could still turn a horse into a unicorn.
[–]lolzergimba 4 points5 points6 points 9 months ago
Can we keep the unicorns?
[–]Insegredious 1 point2 points3 points 9 months ago
I'd hate to lose those.
[–]Flamingyak 3 points4 points5 points 9 months ago
What's wrong with unicorns?
[–]11GTStang 2 points3 points4 points 9 months ago
That. Is. Awesome.
[–]PrototypeKH 2 points3 points4 points 9 months ago
Science, the reason behind reasonings and facts. Fuck you religion.
[–]Slogun56 2 points3 points4 points 9 months ago
Well at least with science we can possibly create unicorns.
[–]Gtyyler 1 point2 points3 points 9 months ago
Didn't the Greeks disprove the theory that the Sun revolves around the Earth?
[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 9 months ago
Not sure. The accepted geocentric cosmology in the middle ages was attributed to Aristotle.
[–]BantamBasher135 1 point2 points3 points 9 months ago
Yea so basically wayyyy before 1543.
[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 8 months ago
No. Notice geocentric, not heliocentric.
[–]Potunka 0 points1 point2 points 9 months ago
"The notion that the Earth revolves around the Sun had been proposed as early as the 3rd century BC by Aristarchus of Samos,[2] but had received no support from most other ancient astronomers." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heliocentrism
I cite wikipedia because I'm good at science.
IIRC the Greeks didn't really prove anything astronomically. However, on a similar note, science was kicking ass way before the 16th century, even in Europe.
[–]Tamosauskas 1 point2 points3 points 9 months ago
Why 1543?
[–]MadeOfStarStuff 0 points1 point2 points 9 months ago
Andreas Vesalius publishes De humani corporis fabrica (On the Fabric of the Human Body), revolutionising the science of human anatomy. Nicolaus Copernicus publishes De revolutionibus orbium coelestium in Nuremberg (these last two events can be considered as leading to the Scientific Revolution.

I am so putting this on a t-shirt-
Edit: I am going to the SMBC store to buy this shirt...I'm lazy anyways...who wants to hunt down iron-on transfer stuff :)
[–]OatmealPowerSalad 1 point2 points3 points 9 months ago
Too late, it came from an SMBC t-shirt that just came out.
[–]Dlbz44 2 points3 points4 points 9 months ago
Science strikes again.
[–]OatmealPowerSalad 2 points3 points4 points 9 months ago
:3
[–]fluxaxion 0 points1 point2 points 9 months ago
Okay now name everything it's done right ;D
Wow. That's quite ironic. I'm writing a paper on the Heliocentric and Geocentric Model right now, relating to the first picture.
[–]Kaarboer 0 points1 point2 points 9 months ago
I don't understand. Science destroyed Michelangelo's Sistine Chapel frescos? What?
[–]Ozera 0 points1 point2 points 9 months ago
No no! The unicorns must be real!
[–]iforgetwords 0 points1 point2 points 9 months ago
As long as they don't disprove... whats the word I'm looking for? Little green men from other planets.
[–]broo20 0 points1 point2 points 9 months ago
Unicorns are possible, just not proven.
[–]jjjairairllaa -6 points-5 points-4 points 9 months ago
Science has not disproven the existence of God, on the contrary, many scientist have thrown up their hands and admitted that there are many things in existence that, according to their limited knowledge, should not exist, but exist they do and our human scientist can't figure it out. Duh.
Atheist are, without a doubt, the most naive idiotic bunch on the face of the earth. You want so badly to distance yourselves from "the ignorant, backward, rednecks and morons" so that you will be accepted ON A MISERABLE WEBSITE to the point that you willfully close yourselves off from God. And not only do you close yourselves off, you take it a step further and openly attack Christians, Muslims, Jews, etc. It's ok to not believe but to go so far as to verbally attack, which I'm sure will eventually "evolve" into open physical attacks with believers being dragged out of churches, is simply piling on the bad crap that is definitely going to happen to you.
The Bible speaks of the end times and it mentions those bound to be saved and those bound for hell and so guess which group you fall into. Live your lives to the best of your ability while you can cause it only gets worse once you die, atheist.

Hey everyone, look! A god of the gaps argument!
Then a whole paragraph of whining about how oppressed religion is!
Unfortunately s/he slipped up trying to make Pascal's wager. Well, two out of three ain't bad I suppose.
Edit: I missed a slippery slope argument, so make that 3/4 which is better than 2/3, this elevates our young theist to a reward of a cookie!
[–]bezenartw[S] 3 points4 points5 points 9 months ago
Want to see me disprove Christianity?
Evolution through the process of natural selection is an observable fact. Meaning that all humans evolved from lesser animals not from the biblical Adam and Eve. If Adam and Eve did not exist there was no original sin or fall of man. So Jesus never had to die on the cross to forgive us of our inherited sins. In other words Its bullshit.
Furthermore the entire idea of your religion and almost all religions are laughable. You have no more proof of Jesus and God than of Zeus or Odin.
[–]arkadian -4 points-3 points-2 points 9 months ago
Wow, great rebuttal of a literal interpretation of the Bible! Wanna run through the others now? Or is the simplest one about your level?
EDIT: I note you're the OP, so whilst I concede that religionists have historically been a hinderance to scientific progress, that is not to say that religion and science are incompatible (as they are not), nor that many scientists do what they do whilst maintaining relgious belief. So really that T-shirt design is complete horseshit.
Also before you label me up as some kind of theist, I'm not.
[–]bezenartw[S] 2 points3 points4 points 9 months ago
To your original post (a thinly veiled person attack) all I have to say is "fuck you. You pretentious, condescending twat". It's simple either the bible in the infallible, inspired word of the almighty God or it isn't.
As far as your edit goes I disagree. Sure some scientist reconcile their personal religious philosophy with science by twisting one to fit the other / That doesn't mean they're compatible it simply means that those scientist are unwilling to admit they are not.
Secondly I did not create the image I merely posted it here for all to enjoy.
[–]arkadian -2 points-1 points0 points 9 months ago
A thinly veiled personal attack is all it merited. So far you've rebutted the minority of Christians who make a literal interpretation of the Bible. The only thing that is simple is your understanding of Christian theology. Everyone knows the Bible is not the literal word of God, except the moron fundamentalists who are widely mocked here.
Your second point about religion being twisted to fit in with scientific belief is misguided and assumes that religious dogma is as rigid as scientific fact. Religious belief is intensely personal and religions are not monoliths; religious groups are composed of individuals; each of whom do not share identical beliefs; and some of those people are able to reconcile their religious belief with the science that they practice. To say they cannot admit they are wrong assumes you have all the answers, which is a pretty arrogant position to take (not to mention a hard one to argue against since it is impossible to substantiate). Science has not ruined everything for religion, religious belief has had to adapt as our understanding of the world has improved. A six-day creation makes sense when science hasn't yet posited the Big Bang theory.
[–]bezenartw[S] 0 points1 point2 points 9 months ago
Do you not see the problem with your argument? If every person picks what parts of the bible/torah/quran they want to follow and ignores the rest how can anyone claim that to be anything other than wishful thinking? If your religion claims to be perfect but is full of holes why believe any of it at all?
I did not claim to have all the answers. I have almost none I'm an idiot but that doesn't mean I should be happy with easy answers to difficult questions. Do I know for certain how the cosmos were created? No but Im going to follow the facts and form my theory instead of starting with a theory and forming facts to fit it.
You said you were going to disprove Christianity. I just wanted to see you complete the job, and not just "pick the low hanging fruit" of six-day creation and original sin. Also no-one is talking about picking parts of the [insert religious text] to suit (although I admit this happens- no one is practicing the law of Deuteronomy!). What changes is not the parts that are practised, but the interpretation of the text as a whole. Scientific understanding has moved on from the Creation, and so have most Christians, understanding the Book of Genesis instead as laying the groundwork for the relationship between God and the individual in the Bible. The reasons for individual religious belief are clearly sociological and I don't want to speak for religious believers (as I am not one), but it's only realistic to accept that as human understanding of the scientific world advances and improves, then the nature of the humans within, and their understanding of their position in the world from a spiritual point of view is going to change. The Catholic Church, for example, no longer presses the case for geocentrism. Incidentally, I don't see religious institutions as a force for good, as they manipulate the ignorant and force their understanding of the world on others in a most illiberal manner.
Im going to follow the facts and form my theory instead of starting with a theory and forming facts to fit it.
I'm sorry if my tone to begin with was a bit confrontational, I felt compelled to post because clearly your understanding of Christian theology is very basic; you're a long way from disproving Christianity and there are better places to start (like on the balance of probability God simply doesn't exist). You say you are going to follow the facts and form a theory; you should therefore know the value of informing oneself before you pronounce on a subject like you just did on "disproving Christianity".
The point of my simple argument was to be simple. It wasn't complex and didn't address modern theology because it simply doesn't have too. Religion is like a house of cards. A flimsy structure built upon a flimsy foundation. If you remove the lower cards from the house it falls in. Like In my example by removing the story of Adam and Eve (which we know to be untrue) form the equation we see how the the rest of the bible falls apart. I would go as far to say that I don't have to disprove it because the bible does a fine job of disproving itself.
I assure you my knowledge of theology is at least on par with the average informed christian (hopefully more so). I just see no point in complicating simple issues. I am very informed on matters of Christian theology; I still attend church and bible study weekly and read my bible as well as the notable atheist works quite often. I do it to be informed.
