Haha I find this imagery unflattering to atheism.

It just looks like religious propaganda. There could be any religious symbol in place of the "A", symbolizing that that religion is the true enlightened religion. This picture is basically the main reason I prefer to be agnostic - don't give a fuck, don't claim to give a fuck, don't claim I know enough to give a fuck. And I fucking hate propaganda.

So anarchism is the key?

[–]VagabondOfTheWastes -2 points-1 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Not the only key, but historically, anarchists have been very outspoken against religion. When a church burned down in Spain, there were many groups that could have been responsible for it, but the authorities thought it would be easiest to blame it on the anarchists because of their reputation.

Well, it should be noted that anarchism actually has multiple meanings. "Anarchists" as a term for people who simply embrace chaos and destruction is just as valid as "anarchism" meaning the naive political philosophy.

Theism and religion are separate concepts.

I think this image would be a lot better without the A key.

Agnosticism frees the mind more than atheism... One's open to figuring things out, the other's already made up its mind... much like religion...

[–]BobsSecondHand 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Atheism is the absence of belief that a deity exists. You really think all the atheistic scientists are close minded?

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

People have stupidly and successfully labelled atheism as a belief and some sort of opposite to agnosticism.

Atheism is the lack of belief, agnosticism is the acceptance of not knowing.

You can be an Agnostic Atheist. Many of us are. I certainly am.

[–]ow_my_eyes 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Atheism is the theory or belief that deities do not exist... One could argue that in this picture atheism would unlock the brain and put it on a different chain. To have no chains would be to have no beliefs, which is only true of a few philosophical viewpoints.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Atheism is a lack of belief, nothing more.

[–]Lowelll -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

No, Atheism is the lack of a belief that deities exist. You will not find a single Atheist that does not admit there is the slightest possibility of a deity existing, which is about as big as the possibility of Harry Potter being real.

[–]space_monster 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

atheism is actually a belief in itself. it is the rejection of belief in the existence of deities. therefore they have arrived at a conclusion about the nature of reality. agnostics, on the other hand, accept that there is no way they could ever know either way. so it is technically (and practically) a more open-minded position. an atheist that accepts there could be deities is technically an agnostic, not an atheist.

[–]Lowelll 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

he's an agnostic atheist. as dawkings put it very nicely: "im agnostic about gods the same way im agnostic about fairies."

[–]space_monster -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

apples & oranges. fairies are superstition. the question of the universe's sentience is a much bigger question, if complexity theory has any merit.

[–]space_monster 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

in fact, fuck complexity theory. to conclude that the system in which we exist, having infinitely more complexity than a human brain, cannot have any semblance of consciousness, is incredibly closed-minded.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

There is no god.

Ever was, ever will be. Never.

I'm an atheist. I'm completely anti-theism in all shapes and forms.

There is no possibility that any deity exists.

[–]Lowelll 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

i agree with everything but the last line, because you can not say that there is no possibility of any deity existing and im actually pretty sure you know that. its is so unlikely that there is no point in arguing about there being a deity, its unlikely to the point that we can accept it as a fact that there is no deity, but can not be disproven, the same way the flying spaghetti monster cant be disproven.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Nope. There is absolutely NO possibility that ANY deity exists. None.

[–]ow_my_eyes 0 points1 point ago

[–]xyroclast -1 points0 points ago

Atheism in the context of this subreddit generally means "we have decided there is no god". I'm not speaking for everyone, but if you look at the voice of the /r/ as a whole, that's what it seems to be saying.

[–]rsandoval92 -2 points-1 points ago

Agnostics believe that human reason is incapable of providing sufficient rational grounds to justify knowledge of whether God exists or does not. Atheists believe that human reason is sufficient evidence to disprove the existence of god.

[–]nhjmunjx 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

As already pointed out in this thread, your definition of atheism is false. Atheism is the disbelief in a god, not the belief that no god exists. The latter stance would be called antitheism.

[–]reversethiscurse 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You haven't taken a logic class have you? Both those sentences mean the same exact thing, you have just placed the negative in a different part of the sentence. Would you say that someone who does not believe that a god does not exist is anti-religious? No... because it means the same thing as being religious. I hate to break it to you, but atheists have a belief. They believe god does not exist (aka, they don't believe god exists). It's the same thing.

[–]Lowelll -2 points-1 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Atheist belief that there is not enough proof to belief in a god.... I see your point man, but were just throwing around definitions.

[–]xyroclast -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

No, I'm not an agnostic theist.

But the difference between an atheist and agnostic is that, when asked, "Is there a god?" the agnostic will say "We haven't figured that out yet", and the atheist will say "Definitely not".

Religious suffering is, at one and the same time, the expression of real suffering and a protest against real suffering. Religion is the sigh of the oppressed creature, the heart of a heartless world, and the soul of soulless conditions. It is the opium of the people.

The abolition of religion as the illusory happiness of the people is the demand for their real happiness. To call on them to give up their illusions about their condition is to call on them to give up a condition that requires illusions. The criticism of religion is, therefore, in embryo, the criticism of that vale of tears of which religion is the halo.

Criticism has plucked the imaginary flowers on the chain not in order that man shall continue to bear that chain without fantasy or consolation, but so that he shall throw off the chain and pluck the living flower. The criticism of religion disillusions man, so that he will think, act, and fashion his reality like a man who has discarded his illusions and regained his senses, so that he will move around himself as his own true Sun. Religion is only the illusory Sun which revolves around man as long as he does not revolve around himself.

-- Karl Marx

Is this the brain of a guy who simultaneously believes in judaism, christianity, and islam? Sounds like he's been enslaved be unitarians.

[–]saskatch 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

not trying to troll, but I think a lot of people who claim to subscribe to religions don't necessarily believe in a god and have open minds about things. I was born Jewish and will always be connected to it in a cultural sense, but like a lot of other Jews I know, believe in science and reason.

[–]Avista 1 point2 points ago

This is just the problem I have with this internet witch hunt that's been going on and intensified lately. It's gotten to a point where the obnoxious and very vocal nut jobs of various religions isn't the target anymore, it's just religion in general. A lot of religious people really just want to enjoy and celebrate their beliefs and traditions in peace, don't care about preaching it to others, are aware that their religions have very little factual backing, etc. etc.
Keep it relevant, instead of just belittling and attacking every religious person in this world. I find it hypocritic to illustrate how being religious constricts a mind, when you make so little effort to look at the bigger picture yourself.

Wouldn't it be more consistent if the "A" was in the round portion of the ring of the key, and it was another brain that was flying away? Thus the key (and whatever the "A" is supposed to mean) is freeing the mind. Just a thought.

Why is Judaism up there before Buddhism/Hinduism? Both of which are a greater blow to free thought than Judaism could hope to be, even if Buddhism is relatively less constrictive than other religions.

Roughly 14 million Jews, and over a billion Hindus.

Possibly it's an cartoon drawn for an American audience, and these are the top 3 religions in the US?

[–]IAmNotAPerson6 0 points1 point ago

My personal guess would that it used to be huge, and it gave birth to Christianity and Islam, the two biggest religions today. Plus those are the three Abrahamic religions.
