Oddly enough, there was a fight programed into the game where you fought Prof. Oak and he would always have a (about) Lv. 70 version of the pokemon that was never picked.

Edit: Forgot to mention this was in Red/Blue/Green only. (I'm not sure whether Yellow had it or not, Gamefreak probably removed it by then.)

POKEDEX wasn't empty of data, whenever a new pokemon appeared it was always the one giving the info not the other way round.

This is true, you don't see ash (in the anime) or your character (in the games) ever take time to observe the behaviour of pokemon and record it in the pokedex. When you encounter them (in the anime) or catch them (in the game) the pokedex gives you a small background, which could only have been gathered if the research had been done beforehand.

What the fuck are people talking about with this meme. In the tv show, the pokedex held info on every god damn pokemon. In the game, you had to go find that shit yourself. The point of the game is to explore. The point of the show is to watch. The fuck.

I'm not sure that the show and the game are entirely inconsistent. Ash can't look up a pokemon's 'dex entry without first seeing it (at least the plot doesn't lead me to believe otherwise). In the game the pokedex rules are similar, no information until you've seen it (giving you the picture and name) or caught it (giving you the full dex entry).

The dex entries themselves are much too detailed for it to be believable that you as a player are "doing Prof. Oak's research for him." I think a much more reasonable interpretation is that Prof. Oak has studied all pokemon and carefully marked down interesting characteristics for each. The dex already has this information in it, it just doesn't share it with you until you've caught the pokemon it refers to.

It only brought up information when Ash encountered the Pokemon, which is kind of what it does except he doesn't have to catch them first in the tv show.

Nothing suggests it is able to look up Pokemon he doesn't first encounter.

He gives you an empty pokedex because he only recently invented it, and you have to physically encounter/catch pokemon to record details about them on the device.

I'm not an expert on Porkimon. ;) never played....

BUT....

you cant just scan a fucking pokimon and have info return magically unless it's pre-programmed. So the info is in there you just have to scan the pokimon...

JESUS!!! SOME PEOPLE JUST CANT THINK LOGICALLY! leave the programming to the programmers please.
