I've seen this or at least something extremely similar at least 5 times and this is still just as amazing to read now as it was the first time.

there better be aliens or this universe is fucking wack.

But Earth is still the center of it all right?

If you look at the micro world you are. You are like a galaxy to all the microbes and bacteria that inhabit your body. You are like a universe on an atomic scale.

Make you feel better?

That right there is why I wish I could travel the universe

Well then.

I'm just going to take a cold shower and think about how pointless my life is.

Words cannot describe how insignificant I currently feel.

FYI, the observable universe is 46-47 billion light-years in radius ...that is, the current distance to the objects we see. However, when the photons was initially emitted, the objects were in fact way more close than, for instance, 13 billion light-years. Problem is, the universe expands.

Link to Khan Academy about the observable universe

EDIT: Just an interesting note. Because the expansion of the universe is accelerating many objects in the night sky are currently moving away from us faster than the speed of light. This means that their light will never reach us and more will follow. One by one we will see fewer and fewer galaxies and, finally, none at all. Luckily, we will have nuked ourselves into oblivion by then.

As an aside, and as an objection to your stating things as scientific fact, (which with only our conjecture and relatively crude instruments we can hardly even allude to) I would point out that there are a great many scholars/scientists etc that don't subscribe to that view of the universe at all. You appear to have fallen victim to the Establishment view, and would do well to qualify your statements as such. Plasma anyone? The great 'correlation' between salt and hyper-tension? Let's not get all up ourselves mimunto.

[–]mimunto 0 points1 point ago*

Of course I am going to listen (i.e. "fall victim") to the scientific "establisment's" view (without a capital "E"). What other thing do you want me to do? Start every sentence with a disclaimer that some people might believe something different and that theories change as we become smarter? No shit, needs to be assumed when you're not dealing with complete scientific illiterates.

You are welcome to state where you think I might be wrong instead of just claiming that I am. I am also very interested in why you chose to address my comment, instead of the other claims that I know to be disproven (and not just other people's opinions -they are proven wrong). For instance, the distance to the most distant objects is clearly not 13 bil l.y.

[–]squeeze-the-juice 0 points1 point ago

I was actually just trying to introduce a bit of levity. I chose to address your comment because I was interested, based on your other (obviously learned, and informative) comments, in what more you would have to say. I regard myself as having only the broadest, and therefore shallowest, knowledge of science i.e scientifically illiterate, and was prodding you for more about the nature of knowledge. All a bit vague, and like I said, a bit of levity.

Okay, I gotta do it... if we say the universe is infinite (a concept no one and I mean NO ONE will EVER truly wrap their heads around) and we are made from elements ejected from exploding stars, well aren't we directly connected to the infinite? Aren't we connected to, not the "god of man" but the "God" of the infinite universe. The god of the universe is the "thing" that expands space, that pulls bodies together, that brings about the tipping point from stable to explosive. It is a god that is destruction and creation and is absolutely amoral and outside of any explanation yet "vibrates" like a quasar or the beat of your heart. If we can ever truly come to understanding our infinitesimally small but absolutely real connection to that unseen thread, energy, matter, whatever, then maybe we can get our heads out of our asses and get on with the business of human evolution. Just remember, evolution isn't a passive act. It wasn't easy for that first monkey to climb down out of the tree. It wasn't easy for that hunky cave guy to VANQUISH (edit) the other cave guys to get some of that sexy cave girl coochie. We need to make a fucking effort.

Dude. I think your cave guys might not be that interested in cave girls.

Goddamn, why is our sun named just Sun? Sure there's Sol and everything, but then you look at the other sun names: Sirius, Arcturus, Aldebaran, Betelgeuse. Those are fucking badass names.

In one of the last panels there is an image of a galaxy with the caption, "It is so large, it technically shouldn't exist according to current physical theories." Can anyone elaborate on this?

[–]Angryl2 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

To my belief, Each galaxy is being held together by certain forces, the main ones being gravity from a super massive black hole in the center of the galaxy, and also dark matter within the galaxy itself. What i think they are saying by "technically shouldn't exist" is that since black holes are a point in space, its hard to comprehend how something so big is being held together by a point. This mostly points to the idea that dark matter is holding it together. This is kinda hard to comprehend because of the tendency for a galaxy to continuously spin creating a greater force pushing outwards making the galaxy more likely to break apart. If you factor in one point holding it together, the force pushing out by speed, and the actual size of this galaxy, it mostly doesn't make much sense as to why its still together. Like i said, the only real answer i can think of why it is still together would have to be dark matter and also dark energy pulling the galaxy together. I haven't learned to much on those two subjects so that's my best guess. Its hard to think that something even as big as our galaxy is being held together by only a few forces, and to think of a galaxy that is 8x populated being held together is even more crazy.

Remember observers of the universe:

Don't fund your space exploration programs, don't you wanna be cool like Earth? Instead of messing with this big everything, you can just relax in your little floating orb!

Remote sensing, FTW. And before I hear whinging about our insignificance, remember that you are a part of the Universe that is self-aware. You have the capacity to observe yourself and the rest of the Universe. Also, your embodiment is a relative of all you can observe, including this scene. Evolution is wonderful.
