Heres the comment thread on that post.

Wooow. Don't prove me wrong, mkay?

Don't get how people can't just admit that they fucked up.

Spoiled...uneducated...self righteous. I could keep going, but you get the type of person.

Here, I disagree. People hate admitting wrong regardless of their education level

I admit when im wrong. Sometimes I don't like the feeling, but I will admit it. You have to learn to be modest. The uneducated part refers to her lack of basic knowledge and common sense. Like I said, I could continue, I think shes the farthest from modest a person can get. To tell someone that they can't communicate with you because you were wrong about something.....that's just childish and further proves you don't deserve an opinion/belief.

[–]Slattz 2 points3 points ago

No, I think the cleverer you are the more likely you are to admit your mistakes!

I heard a story many years ago about a professor who was the acknowledged master in his field who one day discovered that a young upstart was going to give a lecture that disputed the older mans findings. He decided to attend the lecture and sat quietly whilst the young man calmly refuted a major part of the earlier theory. The lecture ended and the hall went very quite as the great man slowly descended the stairs to confront the upstart. He walked up to him and held out his hand and as they shook hands he said ‘Well young man, I’ve spent most of my life studying this subject and you have proved me wrong. Well done.”

(No, I’m not going to say – like in a lot of christian stories like this - , “That man was Einstein”, as I haven’t a clue if the story is true or apocryphal.)

This is the second time that RES has told me that someone has a negative 1 downvote. YOU CANT EXPLAIN THAT.

[–]BiPolah 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

If you remove your own upvote for your own replies it goes to -1. If you downvote yourself it goes to -2. Of course, it only does that if there's no other votes from other people.

[–]omatic810 3 points4 points ago

True. I've already lost a few. It's a shame too, because most of them were good people otherwise.

[–]teamhex 2 points3 points ago

Right, but its insanely hard to get along with people that don't use logic and reason. Its one of many reason I am doomed to live forever alone. I REFUSE to deal with a stupid partner.

[–]pajam 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

My current wife was a naive ignorant sheltered Catholic all her life. She lived in rural Pennsylvania with 2 FOX News watching parents and she had a mind set similar to what you might think. But even though she was ignorant, she wasn't stupid. Once she went to college and left that atmosphere she started to make her own conclusions off her own observations and feelings. I helped guide her down the path of reason by encouraging her to think for herself about certain issues and what she felt was right vs. wrong. She is now no longer religious and doesn't give a shit about any of that.

I almost didn't give her a chance when she asked me out, b/c we were so different and I did not want to date a crazy theist. Turns out I made the best decision of my life by giving her a shot, because she turned out really smart and I now have a logical best friend for the rest of my life.

[–]teamhex 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'm not saying I wouldn't give it a shot, but living in Texas, It's hard. Plus you most likely have more going for you. Im overweight and was burned as a child. On top of that I'm an atheist living in the South so....you see my situation.

[–]pajam 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'm sorry to hear about that man. I live in Kentucky, and it's not so bad. I was a pretty apathetic "live and let live" atheist up until I started reading /r/atheism and seeing all the shit people in the south have to deal with. I think that if you are finding other things may be holding you back such as being overweight, burn scars, etc, you have to be all the more friendly and outgoing to make up for people's initial judgements. Which will take effort especially when dealing with the average southerner. But in any case just being yourself is the best, so if you don't get along with someone, why force it? Hopefully you will find that diamond in the rough in the American south: a logical partner. So best of luck to you man!

[–]teamhex 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Thanks man!

I have become a pretty bitter person over the years, but when im in a good mood "friendly and outgoing" defiantly describe me. I think we can all agree it's hard to be friendly to ignorant people.

Thing like this just go to show how theists brains work... The have no common sense at all...

Have none of them ever been 10 feet off the ground? Do they think a god or gods protects them from the burning sun when they climb a ladder?

[–]lilgreenrosetta 14 points15 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Fuck climbing 10ft on a ladder. For the statement to be true, the earth would first have to be flat.

The amount of stupid in that post defies description.

[–]GhostedAccount 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Didn't you know, we are all only alive for the few second our spot on earth is not more than 10 feet away or closer. Eskimos are also zombies.

[–]atheist_maybe 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

This is how stupid theists brains work. Plenty aren't nearly that stupid. Remember that religion is like a sickness, and even very smart individuals can fall prey to it.

[–]Osthato 0 points1 point ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

One of my smart friends actually told me that* once. I was flabbergasted that he would say something that dumb.

*Edit: "that" refers to the ladder argument

[–]atheist_maybe 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Do you really think that being religious automatically makes you stupid? Plenty of people were indoctrinated from the time they were born(like me), and it sounds like you have no idea what that level of indoctrination is like.

There are many religious people who are more intelligent than you or I, regardless of what you say.

[–]Osthato 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I thought I made that obvious. Even though he is very religious, I still consider him smart. Even though he is smart, he still used the exceedingly dumb argument.

You implied that only dumb theists say stuff like this, and I wanted to give an example of a smart theist using that argument.

[–]atheist_maybe 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Oh, sorry, I thought you were saying that what I said was something a intelligent friend said, and what I said was a dumb statement. My error. I did not mean to imply that, although I probably did.

[–]Osthato 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Ah, I see how my original comment could be misleading. Sorry about that.

[–]Nethius -2 points-1 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Then my question (which i know you can't answer) is why don't these "smarter" theists tell these idiot theists that they are idiots and try to educate them?

[–]atheist_maybe 9 points10 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Behold, an answer! You might not like it, but it is what I have seen. I was raised a fundamentalist christian(thankfully I am no longer one), and I have seen, on many occasions, the smarter theists telling the dumb ones that they are dumb, and trying to educate them. Of course, it tends to work just about as well as when atheists to the same thing to the dumb theists.

[–]BrainTroubles 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

In all fairness, that could be blamed on a poor understanding of the atmosphere. A better thing to say would be : "Fact: Without the atmosphere we'd all be fucking dead. God is amazing."

See, there the only problem is that she credits it to a sky fairy, which still makes it obvious that she's insane, but at least shows she isn't just posting random bullshit that can easily be fact-checked.

[–]eternauta3k -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Actually, believing in this might be a sign of "epistemological humility". You can jump to the conclusion that it's ridiculous because of the stair argument.

But you can also think there might be a more complex mechanism at play, for example that the Earth might have a higher equilibrium temperature at another distance (so you don't instantly burn up, but if the whole Earth was closer for a year, average temp would be higher).

This is all assuming you have no idea about the orbit of planets or the order of magnitude of Earth's mean radius/distance to the Sun. If you do, then you know that Earth's orbit is elliptic, or that 10 feet is so small relative to these distances that it can hardly be influential.

Which is why there are no tall buildings in tropical countries like Singapore and Rio de Janeiro.

You overestimate the intelligence of the average human, even on this subreddit.

[–]Unerlion 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Well, no. The point of asking if he was posting a satirical or sarcastic statement is because without explicitly stating or indicating something is a joke it's impossible to tell a joke from a real belief. I actually know a few people who would honestly believe that there are no tall buildings along the equator.

Estimates for the habitable zone within our own solar system range from 0.725 (the aphelion of planet Venus falls within this range) to 3.0 astronomical units (including the complete orbits of the planet Mars and dwarf planet Ceres), based on various scientific models.

[–]slowhand88 0 points1 point ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Bodybuilding.com, 4chan, and SomethingAwful are like Reddit farm teams now. Enterprising karma whores redditors just "draft" the best posts to play on this site.

Edit: Not trying to imply that's 100% a bad thing either. Reddit is a content aggrigator more than anything else, so the fact that most of the content here is "recycled" or "reposted" from the rest of the internet is by design.

[–]egglipse 2 points3 points ago

Even stranger than that your head does not usually burn upstairs, is that over a year our distance to the Sun varies about 3,000,000 miles and yet we manage to avoid burning. This can only mean that God must be protecting us.

[–]Fortuna95 4 points5 points ago

Lets assume she was right, God still wouldn´t be amazing. If you create a habitable planet, you just have to put it in the right place, or it won´t work. Just like the guy who changes tires isn´t amazing for putting the wheels exactly on the axle, it´s just his job.

Okay, obviously the argument is stupid. The rebuttal, however, is just as stupid; being 10 feet on top of a ladder is not the same as an entire planet being 10 feet closer to the sun (and yes, I know there are plenty of reasons the original thing is incorrect).

hahah I had a guy on the bus the other day tell me that if the moon was 1 and a half inches (specifically, not 2, not 3, 1 and a half) closer or further, it would crash into earth or shoot out into space. I happened to be reading Astronomy magazine at the time and showed him a diagram of the moons elliptical orbit. He still said I was wrong.

[–]EricRohan 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I remember being told this (similar anyway) when I was twelve and still a christian and I had to explain that they were wrong by illustrating that the earth isn't in a circular orbit and that it does in fact get closer and farther from the sun... I was twelve. They tried to back peddle and say that it was if you averaged it out but even that wouldn't have much of an effect. The fact is that if Mars was the size of the earth it would be habitable. Which leads me to believe there are solar systems out there with more than one habitable planet! There can be three perhaps more than three planets that have breathable atmospheres of sorts around one single star. How trippy would it be if we lived in one of those planetary systems?

Posts that make no attempt to add to the discussion should be downvoted according to Reddiquette.

Also posts complaining that an image is old should be downvoted according to the Reddiquette.

Seth got downvoted, in short, because he failed to read the Reddiquette guidelines before he posted.

I did a combination of things. I pointed out why he was being down voted while also agreeing with him, but then I also showed my support for what I know to be a re post because of all those reasons I listed. None of which is really a good enough reason to post, so I combined it all and hoped no one would notice.

EDIT I think just wanting to say something to someone, like, "I agree with you but..." IS adding to the discussion. So I'm in the clear.
