For the record, this came from some terrible film some asshole made with a series of mice being torn apart by his turtle with metal music blaring. This is a snuff film, not nature, although things like this do happen in nature. Yes the turtle has to eat, but thats not why he was feeding the mice to it, he has a sick fascination with their suffering.

I see a lot of people still saying "Oh well thats nature he has to feed his turtle." The point i was trying to make was that the video in question absolutely plays on the suffering of the mice for the "pleasure" of the viewer. I should mention that the title of the video was something like "Huge snapping turtle decapitates and disembowels mice," not "Feeding time for Snappy." I think that serves as a bit of a window into what the maker of the video was thinking.

[–]FrankManic 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

We had a raging battle about this last time the gif was posted, which amounted to "The turtle is a predator which is primed to hunt and eat live pray and will find hunting live prey stimulating and enriching, as it simulates actions it would take in it's natural environment and habitat.

[–]ZeekySantos 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

However, that does not detract from the conclusion that because the guy made a snuff film out of it he's still a deranged fuck. Right?

Excellent a bleeding heart. Regardless what sub human might have defined themselves though this, know that all kinds of misfortune and suffering occur on a daily basis on all manor of creatures including humans, and that lashing out on an internet forum will do nothing to mitigate this nor prevent it.

[–]DerpusOfValues 2 points3 points ago

Regardless what sub human might have defined themselves though this

...What?

[–]HappyStance -2 points-1 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's probably both. And his reasoning for doing it doesn't matter, it's not cruelty because those mice were raised as feeder mice. It's a little disturbing yes, but really, what makes it any worse than something like this? Because it's bloody? Because it isn't quick? Because the mouse is cute and the cricket isn't? None of these things are the fault of the pet's owner.

[–]TooSlyForYou 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Oh for Cthulhu's sake, don't play the 'all animals are equal' card. The cognitive and sensory abilities of a mouse are far superior to those of a cricket.

[–]oniongasm 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Cognitive and sensory differences? Absolutely. But a cricket still freaks the fuck out when you tear a leg off.

[–]HappyStance 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Obviously. I was going to throw the fact that mice are more complex than crickets in every way on top of the others, but I figured what I had said was enough and couldn't immediately think of a less long-winded way to say it.

I'm arguing the intention behind the videos doesn't matter. Here is the video the gif I posted was taken from. The uploader, who is also the owner, describes it as "Great fun to watch." What is the difference in intention between these two videos?

[–]kipkoan 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The intention matters because there is a high correlation between someone desiring to cause non-human animals to suffer, and them desiring to cause humans to suffer.

I think it's one of the highest signs of humanity that we're so empathic toward other species.

[–]harebrane 19 points20 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I suspect that where this gets strange, is it may actually be a sign of something biologically broken in us. Humans relate to other species, bond with them, interact with them readily, etc, because the innate self/non-self instruction set many mammals have doesn't work in us. You can see this in action with dogs as opposed to wolves, btw. Wolves won't acknowledge a human socially, unless that human howls at them, which is apparently part of their integral self-species recognition. Dogs, however, have been bred so that little feature doesn't work anymore, and they see you as just another dog, albeit a rather odd, incredibly large one.
This little software bug is, I hypothesize, related to all manner of quirks of human behavior, one favorite example being furries. For one thing, we used to be a hell of a lot fuzzier, for another, we have no innate sense of what an appropriate mate looks like, and since we're wired pretty similarly to Bonobos, IE having a tendency to use various flavors of getting one's freak on, as a social lubricant... well.. you add non-human animals in affectionate relationships to this mix, and some of us are going to get a bit.. buggy.
TL;DR, I suspect humans empathize with other species due to a software error, one of those few cases where a bork somewhere in the system actually made the product function waaay better, but not without some quirks.

[–]Michaelllllll 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I suspect it's just a product of selection pressures. In a world where brutal hunting and gathering is not necessary, and very littler threatens our safety regularly, gentle and loving traits are more often selected for. Peace, love, and happiness get you further in this society, because social contracts exist to help every person out. Selection of low social skills and harsh temperament is unfavored.

It's a pretty good example of Directional selection.

[–]harebrane 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

A willingness to identify and empathize with non-self species was present well before we left the hunter gatherer lifestyle, though. How do you think our ancestors domesticated wolves, horses, goats, sheep, cattle, etc? This made them quite a lot more dangerous, actually, rather than making them soft. Now our ancestors had fast, powerful allies that could rip an enemy, or prey, to shreds, as well as companions that could turn nutritionally useless substances (grass, leaves) into food.
Empathy made us more deadly, not less, is what I'm trying to say.

[–]Hughtub 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Very interesting. We embrace weakness in animals (and reward tameness) because we instinctively know that we can easily destroy them if need be, but the independent ones are potentially dangerous.

[–]Michaelllllll 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I agree, however our motivation has shifted drastically. Pets are rarely domesticated these days with the purpose of ripping enemies to shreds. Our drive toward empathy is no longer motivated by the physically self-preserving reasons we used to need, but instead toward societal self-preservation.

[–]Hughtub 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yet it's potentially a weakness, anthropomorphizing creatures who don't actually think or feel how we do.

I had pet rats. They're lovely creatures, smart and social and affectionate. And when they die they die horribly, struggling for life to the very last, before succumbing to tumors and abscesses and all manner of horrors. We all die and few of us die well.

They only used a mouse for shock value. Normally people feed aquatic predators like turtles feeder fish, which you can probably get at 10 for $1.

[–]ArchSchnitz 13 points14 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That turtle looks like a common snapping turtle. If so, I used to keep one of those, and I mostly only ever fed it feeder fish with the occasional ghost shrimp, minnow or crayfish. It's a lot less messy and it makes you feel a little bit less awful if they go down quick.

[–][deleted] 11 points12 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That doesn't change the fact that mice are fed to other pets, like snakes, all the time. And, of course, they're eaten by animals in the wild. As such, I have trouble finding anything morally wrong with this.

[–]moviequote88 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I guess with the mouse, it's drowning in addition to being ripped in half. What a horrible way to die. 0_0

[–]FrankManic 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yes. And a fish would be ripped in half, a crayfish would be messily dismembered, any live prey will suffer a few moments of horror before they die. One life means no more or less than any other.

[–]zlozlozlozlozlozlo 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Why? I think so: bacteria < insect < fish < reptile < bird < mammal. Taking the life of an ape is intrinsically worse than that of a jellyfish. Taking the life of a mushroom is not cruel at all.

[–]FrankManic 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Okay, I acknowledge that the mouse is more shocking because it's easier to empathize with, but is it's life worth more than a fishes?

[–]hsurbon 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I, personally, am not the type of person to easily give in to the fallacy that life has a measurable worth. The two main categories of people who comment here are those who find it sickening and oppose it, and those who find it intriguing and defend it. What I'm focused on is the fact that the person who filmed and uploaded this was likely a kind of sociopath who gets off to this and delights in the knowledge that it's now internet famous, and right now, we're all giving him what he wants.

[–]FrankManic 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I think you might be read into this a bit much. We all watch nature videos where lions chase down various animals and hawks kill things and sharks rip this or that apart. This just isn't that different. Maybe he just thought "Damn that turtle is vicious, and the way it eats is a frightening and powerful reminder of mortality and the brutality of nature."

[–]Mrs_Brisby 8 points9 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

No idea why some assholes down voting you. Your right, animals got to eat, and its primarily a carnivore, then its got to eat meat. Some people are so fucking arrogant about their food. They don't realize that their shooting Bessie in the fucking head when they eat a hamburger. Such disassociation with reality.

[–]kilcunda 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'm just going to play devil's advocate and throw this out here: Why couldn't they just feed a recently killed/frozen then thawed out rat to the turtle? The only reason I can really think of is if the turtle was retrieved from the wild and was accustomed to hunting for moving prey.

[–][deleted] 10 points11 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

recently killed/frozen then thawed out rat to the turtle?

Many reptiles/animals can only discern food by movement. If you put dead insects in a tank with a frog, it will starve. It's an animal, not a civilized diner with a fork and knife.

Also, what's the difference? A mouse's life simply is not worth the time to build an entire mouse processing/freezing industry. It's much easier to just toss the fucker in. It's only a mouse for christ's sake. We snap their heads off if they get into our cupboards... I fail to see how that's more humane.

[–]bladahdee 11 points12 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Most individuals also use frozen because they are significantly less likely to carry parasites and other things that could be harmful to the predator. It's easy enough to feign movement by wiggling the dead mouse around with thin tongs.

Source: I have many snakes in the classroom where I student teach.

[–]kilcunda 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

This is pretty much what I was referring to: I've had quite a few friends over the years who have had pet snakes and feed them in this manner. Just out of curiosity, what do you teach? Sounds like an interesting career!

[–]bladahdee 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I just teach plain old high school biology in the US. I just finished my student teaching and my cooperating teacher had eight snakes because he teaches a Herpetology elective. I prefer mammals and geckos, personally.

[–]FrankManic 1 point2 points ago

It really is interesting. We murder them by the millions without a thought, yet our hearts bleed when we actually have to see what we're doing.

[–]ThatsSoKafkaesque 2 points3 points ago

The record for human bite pressure is almost a thousand pounds; you could probably bite that turtle in half if it would fit in your mouth.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'm not sure about that. I think snapping turtle shells are a very similar hardness to human teeth, so it's very likely that your teeth would break before you could get to the required pressure.

When I was a child we had a pound with an alligator snapping turtle in it, we never swam bare foot in that pond. I remember a mother duck swimming across the pond with her ducklings behind her. They started diapering from the back end of the line, just sucked right under, never to be seen again. That monster took three of those baby ducks. I didn't swim in that pond for the rest of that summer.

Life's not a bitch, life is a beautiful woman. You only call her a bitch because she won't let you get that pussy. Maybe she didn't feel y'all shared any similar interests, or maybe you're just an asshole who couldn't sweet talk the princess.

Mother nature? Don't you mean the cunt who fed the live mouse to the turtle. The turtle is in a tank. This isn't occuring in the wild.

[–]werpull_von_urkstein 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

this reminded me so much of the scene in star wars episode 1 when qui-gon, obi-wan, and jarjar are underwater in the bongo and the goomer fish tries to eat them and then the fucking giant snake/fish/man thing grabs the goomer fish and rips it in half and then qui-gon goes "theres always a bigger fish." altogether this is one of the most fucked up things ive seen recently.

[–]Vornaskotti[S] 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

OP here - to all of you who pointed out that the turtle wasn't cruel, of course it wasn't, it was just having its lunch hour. Was this totally unnatural since someone dropped the mouse in the tank? Uh, what do you think, do animals in the nature pet each other to death while whispering sweet nothings? Right at this second there's ten million cute mice and ducklings and bunnies being torn apart alive while the predator is going "yay, lunch, won't starve to death".

What really got me with this is the blind all-overriding will to live, the goddamn half a mouse swimming to the surface even though it was dead already - and that for me was somehow a cruel joke. It was horrible yet moving in a really heart curdling way.

As for filming all this, and especially making a movie out of it with a metal soundtrack (someone in here said that was the source of the gif) - yeaaaah, that's pretty suspect. When you keep certain animals, you end up having to feed them live things (I've had reptiles, for example), but you really shouldn't be getting off about it hard enough to turn it into a little home movie.

...then again, are any of us who watched that more than once any better than the guy who filmed the thing?

[–]brasstrings 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I feed my snakes live feeder mice. Over the years i guess you could say it's gotten "easier." But when the turtle ripped the mouse in HALF?!! i was not ready for that. I agree, mother nature is a cruel bitch at times. Allowing the mouse the ability to still attempt escape at that point.... synapses still firing, sad, cruel and sad.
