You have to be careful with a BSOD screensaver. I've had people "helpfully" reboot my Linux desktop because of it.

Given the number of people I know running windows on their macbooks, I'd at least check.

Windows runs (and crushes) on MacBooks too.

This wouldn't be a very effective screensaver. Screensavers were used to stop screen burn in, caused by long term display of static images. Having a static image for a screensaver would defeat the purpose. Might make a nice wallpaper, though.

[–]giantasparagus 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Except that modern screens don't actually suffer from image burn in.

[–]donkeydiddler 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It takes a lot longer than it used to, but it can still happen.

[–]wishfulendeavors13[S] 0 points1 point ago

Well I only have my screensaver go for 5 minutes before the screen turns off. So it's not too bad. Also, how can LED's suffer from image burn in? I'm not saying that you're wrong, but I'm just curious.

[–]donkeydiddler 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Unless you've got a phone as your display, it's (most likely) not using LEDs as the actual display elements. It's still an LCD display, but it's using LEDs as backlighting instead of the old cold cathode tubes in regular LCD screens.

[–]wishfulendeavors13[S] 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

So the only difference between an LCD and an LED TV is that the backlighting is different? Then why to LED's cost so much more?

[–]donkeydiddler 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

A good LED tv will have an absolute fuckton of LEDs, so that the backlighting can be confined to as small a space as necessary.

Take a traditional LCD display hooked to a computer. Put a black screen up and nothing else. The lighting will be off so the black looks as black as possible. Now, move a cursor on to that screen. All the backlighting will turn on just to illuminate that one small patch of white.

Now, take an LED screen and do the same thing. Only a very small number of LEDs in that one area will light up, so that the rest of the screen remains as dark as possible.

That shit costs money to make it work properly, and especially when you get into the higher end where you'll have even more LEDs per square inch.

[–]BowlerNerd -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Most led monitors are edge-lit and offer little to no benefit over traditional lcd (power savings maybe?). The feature it sounds like you're referring to is local dimming, which can potentially provide a much better contrast. The only reason most led lcd tv are so expensive is pure marketing.

[–]donkeydiddler 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Power savings, form factor (super thin displays), and somewhat more even lighting, although that's not always the case.

Agreed on most monitors being edge lit, the monitor + cursor example was just the first thing that came to mind, along with being easy to visualise.

[–]DanielLikesPie 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Bullshit. I need a new TV because I used to think that.

[–]giantasparagus 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

What did you have on your tv that was displayed without movement for hours on end?

[–]DanielLikesPie 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

My computer. I left the house and forgot to turn the TV off, and now I have a Windows 7 logo burnt in my screen :(

[–]giantasparagus 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Ah, that sucks.

[–]thevdude 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Do you have it still? I could use a new TV and I could totally deal with that.

[–]thevdude 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You can fix that. Either leave it on flashing colors, or leave on JUST WHITE for a while, at least as long as it was on to burn in the win7 logo. It'll get better.

[–]DanielLikesPie 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'll try it, thanks!

[–]thevdude 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Some TVs actually have a mode for this, where it will sweep white across the screen.

I forget where I read about this, and I'm headed to bed, but if I find it I'll send it to you.

look for a burn in DVD, it helps calibrate the screen.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Sadly it does. I have some certified apple monitor and when it's challenged with bright colors that are static for maybe 3 minutes, the burn sets in. Luckily it heals, which I'm sure its why the thing cost 20K.

[–]giantasparagus 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

20K for a freaking monitor?!?!??! good god.

My laptop doesn't have any problems with burn in, but that's okay, because it has just about every other problem imaginable. Stupid HP.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

I exaggerate. Mac monitors are fairly expensive, though.

The Windows 9x BSODs were much more aesthetically pleasing than the new ones. Center justification is classier.

Haha, Windows XP jokes... that's a classic. Good thing I never get one of those on Windows 7.

Mac lovers, stop trying to justify buying overpriced hardware.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

It's strange but every PC I use has this glitch where it puts my high-velocity fist into the screen. The Mac has the same glitch but also a failsafe that reminds me of how much money I wasted on the damn thing.

[–]DanielLikesPie -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I paid for the customer service and great software. The hardware is just any decent PC put into a nice case.

[–]auronvi -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Don't speak to me with that logic... you bought a Mac to spite me and my PC. I KNOW IT, DON'T LIE TO ME!!! RAAAAAWRRR....

Mac Pro is currently $2500.00 USD. It has an amazing CPU that costs about $1200. Video card, so-so, $250. Ram, hard drives and optical drives, $200-$300 at the most. Case, $150 for fully steel case. So add it up and it's about $1750-$1850 for the hardware if you were to make a PC equivilant. That means about $650-$750 for Software & Support. That is way too much money to spend on an OS and support.

They are great machines and work wonderfully, I just think $2500 is way too much to spend on a workstation. You are a reasonable human being it seems so I don't have to say that this is just my opinion but I am not attacking your decision for buying one, just stating why I won't ever buy one. For $750 I can build myself a quite powerful PC and do support for myself.

I have a school-issued MacBook. It sucks. And I can't upgrade anything since I don't technically own it.

[–]thechris353 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Also, with a Mac, you're not paying for support. You only get 90 days free phone support and have to shell out an extra $250-$350 for the 3 years support. Edit: Mac Pro AppleCare is actually only $169, I think.

[–]DanielLikesPie 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I paid $1,000 for my MacBook Pro. $2,500 is way too high.

EDIT: In case anyone wanted to know, it's a 13" 2011 model.

Mac Pro, not Macbook pro. Your macbook doesn't have that hardware I described.

This is actually a fake BSOD installed by a Chinese virus (smittfraud.c) that attempts to get you to purchase Panda Anti-virus.

You've been watching Asian porn, I see.

[–]LoganPhyve 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

No. This is a willfully installed BSOD screensaver that has a special exit key. It tricks users into thinking their machine has crashed and usually the user gives the ol' 3 finger salute to a perfectly running system causing a hard-reset. BSOD screensavers are funny once or twice, but can cause major headaches.
