As a student the one biggest reason I might not ask a question is because I don't even know what it is I don't understand.

I second this. Whenever a teacher asks, at the end of class, if anyone has questions?,all I want to say is "You remember that thing you said... It started at the beggining of class and ended just before I asked this question... Yeah, would mind explaining that?

Some teachers need to realize we all have short term memory, unless "teacher" helps you find memorable techniques to remember the main parts of what they say, I agree with the first parent post.

I would remember most of the stuff, but afterwhile, ya I forget (no matter how logical it is, unless it triggers other memories I find familiar with)... taking notes is primary o_o... but at the cost of not focusing/understanding on what the teacher was saying in the first place.

EDIT It is also important by allowing students to asks questions later on, instead of at that moment the teacher would ask "if there are any questions". I found that students are sometimes discouraged for asking questions late, so they don't end up asking all the questions they want, based on their speed of interpretation.

In my opinion, the best way for teachers to combat this is to not lecture for an entire class. Incorporate group activities that break up short 5-10 minute lecture periods. An example of this is to use so-called "clicker questions": anonymous, credit-less, mini-quizes during the class. These allow the prof to gauge how much information is being understood by the class and what parts are being misunderstood while also allowing students to gauge if they have misunderstood something and holding them accountable for listening to lecture.

This.. is actually a great idea! I mean, it wouldn't work for every subject but... I love this XD

[–]smithzv 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Well, it is already being used in several (many?) universities in science and math. Clicker questions are what the students call them because they are implemented via IR transmitters (i.e. clickers or remote controls). Before that they we implemented by the students holding up colored index cards to indicate their answers. It is a good fit for math and science, but I imagine it might fit more than you might think.

Whoa whoa whoa wait. People have clickers which are anonymous and creditless? I have always hated clickers because they have always been programed to me and are part of my grade

[–]smithzv 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yes. People often tie them into a participation grade, basically a modern day roll call, but I think it is against their very purpose to have them give credit based on right or wrong answers. When used for attendance/participation they are only anonymous in regards to fellow students, which is enough to remove the embarrassment/stress factor associated with raising your hand to answer a question. If they aren't used for attendance, they can be completely anonymous. For instance, In the one class I took that used them (junior level E&M) we just came to the front of class at the beginning, picked one up at random and returned it at the end. Completely anonymous (also nice that we didn't have to pay for them).

I have not learned a single thing in chemistry so far this year. I used to ask a lot of questions because I didn't understand anything, but at this point, I've just stopped asking questions and work on other shit in class

As a teacher: Students need to simply think aloud without embarrassment! We can't help if you don't tell us anything. Nothing is more frustrating than sitting there guessing over and over on what they need help with. Secondly, I would guess he's simply referring to effort. Students say they don't need help because they know that if they don't get the assignment right they can always pretty much redo it with one on one help.

This.

"MISTER, I'M NOT SMART, THAT MEANS I AM INCAPABLE OF LEARNING ALL THIS!", and then the special ed department holds their hands, and even though they don't turn in all their work the whole six weeks, and you have a policy that says that they can't make up work, you're forced to give them a packet of everything they missed, and modify it and CURVE it.

Fuck these kids.

Sadly I wish I had asked for more help in school, for some reason I had this irrational fear that if I asked for help, people would find me to be a weaker person because of it. If I didn't ask for help I thought I would force myself through it and learn it eventually, but I would never learn it that well if I even did learn it. I guess I just found myself too dumb to ask for help in fear that I'd look even dumber.

[–]Rebootkid 6 points7 points ago

I must be the exception. I had my "Networking" teacher telling the class flat-out wrong things. I called him on it, he said, "If you think you can do a better job teaching the class, Reboot, come on up."

So I did. I did learn a new appreciation for teachers. (Coming up with a syllabus is HARD) However, I also learned that its OK to say to students, "You know what, I don't know the answer to that. Lets research it together."

The tech school asked me if I would stay on, after graduation, to teach with them, but I already had a better paying job lined up.

[–]jbuschdev 1 point2 points ago

Some people prefer to figure it out on their own. Being handed the answer, especially in a situation that requires critical thinking, defeats the purpose of doing the assignment. If you give someone a problem, and then immediately offer the solution... they don't learn anything.

I refused help from TA's and teachers because I didn't know what I was doing. I've learned more than my peers and have a much better understanding of the material now, even if I spent more a lot more time on assignments and labs. Granted if you get really stuck or don't understand the assignment you ask for help. But I'd rather be guided towards the solution, not given it.

In a version of the Titanic drinking game, one of the rules that my friends and I have come up with is that a player must drink every time Leo looks younger than 17. We get drunk pretty fast.

The thing I find so weird about that is that it's a love story. Like its got some set pieces but that's essentially like saying The Notebook would be cool to see in 3D.

This is also how I felt when my High School algebra teacher didn't believe I could do his homework assignments in my head without showing work "because he couldn't even do that", and at the end of the semester tested me in front of him by making me do literally every single one of those assignments again.

I don't presume to be remarkably good at math, but early high school algebra is not freaking hard, and he was by far the worst math teacher I have ever had. If he would have just assigned actual in class tests we probably could have avoided that as well. ಠ_ಠ

[–]UrbanDryad 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Teacher here. I always made a deal with kids like that. If you can show the work and make a 100 on the assignment, then you earn the right to not have to show it anymore.

If you miss anything, you still need the training wheels so shut up. You are not a special genius. You do not pass go. You do not earn $200.

Each year, I have a few kids that ace the challenge and I keep my word. Most of them are full of shit. They fail a few times and quit bothering me.

[–]Malicali 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It'd have been nice if this guy allowed a "deal". Rather this was me showing up after school during the last week of the semester and sitting in his classroom for about an hour doing all of the assignments that he had previously given me 0 credit for.

I was never the oppose authority challenge the teacher type of kid, this guy was just one of those complete tool sort of teachers who had no respect for his students.

[–]UrbanDryad 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That makes it even worse. He should never have let it get that far. After the first paper in which you hadn't shown answers he should have mentioned it. Better yet, he should have always given time in class for everyone to at least start the assignment and caught it then. I do that so that I can see that everyone is doing it properly before I cut them loose to go home and fuck it up.

[–]Thundershrimp 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Expecting you to show your work on tests makes sense, though. Especially if they are take home.

[–]Malicali 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

yeah, it does. it just didn't change my 14 year old mind to show the work pointlessly. especially when id be doing them during class because the dope would hand out the assignments early in the class period.

[–]Structure 2 points3 points ago

As a teacher myself, this is very true. I don't know why they insist on acting like they know everything. Especially when I can speak like a normal adult and they won't even know what half the words mean. Perpetuate? What does that mean? Jape? never heard of it. Then I teach them a word like fop, and it is their favorite word for the rest of the year.

[–]knylok 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I love "defenestration". Not because of the word itself, but because everyone else seems to think it's such a great word, and that it shows off how vast their vocabulary is. You ask someone what their favourite word is, and they want to impress you? "Defenestration".

If a student doesn't need my help, but consistently get everything wrong, I re-evaluate my teaching strategy. Usually, I ask them to come in later.

[–]TheOtherOneWhoSpeaks 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It used to bother me in high school when we would be reading a book out loud as a class, and when I got hung up on a word (which i fully understood the meaning of as well as the pronunciation) the teacher would butt in IMMEDIATELY before allowing myself (or any student) to correct ourselves. Too bad I didnt think about it back then, but when the teacher was reading out loud and caught themselves on a word, I should have corrected them.
