His mom asked him "what is he doing to the coffee table?" It is obvious that he is hammering nails into it. Given that it is so obvious, he is wondering if she is asking a trick question.

He is a child so he is taking the question literally. He doesn't understand that she actually wants him to stop, and is questioning why he was hammering nails into the coffee table in the first place. So in a way, it actually is a trick question, since she knows the answer and wants a response different from the known answer.

My response is detailed because I am procrastinating.

Okay, I'm glad people are trying to explain why this is funny (it is, and it's fucking hysterical) but I feel like the point is kind of being missed. So...

Calvin & Hobbes was, at its core, always about far more than a chance at humor. The comic was often an examination of staggeringly bleak snippets of adulthood. Bullying, inferiority, death, the loss of a friend or loved one...these are all things we've likely had to deal with in our lives.

The thing is, Calvin is five years old. He doesn't understand that everything isn't going to be perfect, that you can't just run off to be Spaceman Spiff all the time, and sometimes, the world is just going to suck. The comic was a reminder to adults and a (sometimes not so) gentle nudge to kids that sometimes life sucks, but it doesn't mean we can't go sledding with our best friend every once in a while.

TL;DR--the comic's a humorous example of a 5-year-old's naivete. Nothing more.

[–]muffley 49 points50 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's obvious what he's doing, pounding nails into the table. As a child, he can see what he's doing, and not understand how the adult doesn't see the same thing.

When I was like 5, I drew with (washable) green magic marker on the fretboard of my dad's 1966 Gibson hollowbody electric guitar, which at the time I had no way appreciating that it was worth several thousand dollars. I like to think the conversation he had with me when he saw what I was doing went something like this strip.

Fortunately, it came off easily.

[–]Bubblebath_expert 16 points17 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

In the life of a child, most questions whose answers seem obvious are trick questions. Teachers ask things that they expect the kids to get wrong, so they can correct them into truth and stuff like that. Entrapment. With the distance, this sort of entrapment seems benign, but for a child, it can feel threatening.

Many kids, if not all of them, reach a point where they assume that the most obvious the answer, the likeliest it is to be a trick question.

[–]Blacula 29 points30 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's not remembered so fondly because it was funny(even though it really is), it was remembered because of the stories like this.

[–]Subduction 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah, but it's stuff like that I don't get the most.

If you judge it by a comic standard there's no humor, if you judge it by a literary standard it's not particularly wise...

Anyway, I'm going to stop now. I don't want to pull apart something other people like, I'm just saying it never grabbed me at all.

[–]BloodSoakedDoilies 16 points17 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It isn't about humor or literary standard. It is about a relationship. It is about the wonder of the world as viewed by a 5 year old boy, and the confusion that the adult world presents. To a 5 year old, some things are clear - like - it is FUN to hammer nails into the table. It is confusing when an adult questions that.

The relationship with Hobbes is one of the most eloquent expressions of social commentary ever created.

But, I am wasting my breath. Reddit is a place that chooses cats over children, and wallows in cynicism about childhood.

absurd hyperbole

[–]zidaneqrro 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

no.

when I think of calvin and hobbes, the thing that strikes me the most is the social commentary. looking at the world through the eyes of an imaginative little boy and his stuffed tiger seemed to make many of us take a step back and reflect upon our lives through a different perspective.

as bloodsoakeddoilies said, it really is a very eloquent expression of social commentary. (i wouldn't say one of the most)

I'd really appreciate it to know why this is funny. I never read C&H as a kid, so as a young adult every single one of them is unfunny. Every single one. Trick questions aren't funny. He's doing something he knows is wrong. It's like watching Tom and Jerry and being old enough to know Jerry is an asshole. It may be my loss, but it confounds me why everyone likes it.

[–]big_ander 11 points12 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You know Calvin's 5, right? Kids at that age aren't fully self-aware yet. He doesn't realize he's being an ass.

[–]Vilvos 12 points13 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

He's doing something he knows is wrong.

Every other kid in the comics at that time was a well-meaning idiot; this particular strip is almost an anti-joke: there's no punchline where the kid's stupidity is resolved and everyone gets cookies. Calvin is just an asshole.

[–]starlinguk 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

He's a 6-year old. Kids that age think they're the centre of the universe.

[–]DorkasaurusRex 11 points12 points ago

[–]lovelyallen 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I grew up with C&H but you arent missing anything. You have your own experiences and views and that's just dandy! No need to have grown up the exact same way as a bunch of other people :)

[–]daynewma 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You're comparing an apple to Alfonso Ribiero. Jerry is a sadist, who enjoys hurting someone who is ostensibly his only friend in the world. Jerry has no imagination, except when when devising ways to maim Tom.

Calvin is not depicted as a brat. Brats are annoying because they want attention. Calvin is an indeed an asshole; he doesn't play with the same rulebook as everybody else, but expects those people to play with his.

While you might scoff at Calvin's behavior in this comic, it isn't even indicative of the entire series. A lot of Calvin and Hobbes comics take place in alternate realities, created in Calvin's mind. Sometimes it's a film noir detective setting, a bad soap-opera comic, and often a far away planet.

A great deal of stories take place mostly in Calvin's fictionalized worlds. Like this one about a world where deers hunt people or this one where a UFO steals Earth's resources for their own.

I once read an analysis that said Calvin is in his own world so often, he doesn't believe the rules of the real world apply to him. It's why you see comics like this; the comic doesn't depict a boy who is lying to get out of school. It shows the events as how Calvin would describe them as the alien shapeshifter. Obviously he's not the alien. But he's so self-absorbed in his own fantasies that he prefers the fantasy to the reality.

[–]d3rp_diggler 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The humor is in how close to home this may hit people, as this is the kind of shit a real kid would pull off. Most people knew one Calvin in their time...and hopefully they weren't his parents.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Same here. I always thought C&H was a white thing, along with having a kayak in the garage and wearing shoes inside the house. The only comics I ever read in my childhood were Garfield comics I borrowed in library.

That's probably why I'm so fucked up now.

[–]MrRoboto113 4 points5 points ago

I don't think this is a good example of a funny C&H strip. This joke is a little simple and the delivery tends to confuse people. (It took me a long time to get this one as a kid.)

The real reason I love C&H is because it has a lot of clever scenarios, usually attributed to Calvin's imagination, that were inspiring to me. Things like all of the "machines" he imagined out of cardboard boxes (transmogrifiers, duplicators, time machines, spaceships, etc.), his anti-girl club "G.R.O.S.S.," calvinball, spaceman spiff, stupendous man, and so many other ideas that were really fun to read. The comic also has some very funny moments, but I don't think that's the sole reason people love it.

If this was any other artist you would have downvoted and called the comic shit. How is that even funny? Fucking shitty comic and OP is a karmawhore cunt.
