There's apparently a website that allows you to cheat in Scrabble-esque games. You fill in the tiles as they are played, and it always tells you the optimal move according to your slate.

Seems to be getting decent traffic too! Humanity, I am disappointed.

No wonder I get my rageface on when I'm playing Scrabble online.

"There is NO WAY they thought of QUIXOTRY by themselves, FUCK."

[–]alienangel2 10 points11 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You don't actually have to use a site to think of the word though - most PC/phone versions of these games don't allow the user to submit an invalid word, and don't penalize you for trying. So someone with those letters could just notice that they would fit and have a high value, so try them without having any idea what the word actually means.

Strategically even this isn't a good idea, you don't necessarily want to always go for the highest immediate score, you want to avoid giving access to good multipliers to your opponent, while forcing him to open up good ones for you. And you also want to claim letters when the number of remaining letters is low, even if you can't use them before the game ends.

[–]sockxl 17 points18 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

If playing a 1500 point word isn't a good idea, you might not have a firm grasp on the game of Scrabble.

[–]NeverGunnaGiveYouUp 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Not to be an ass, but you are obviously the one without a firm grip on scrabble. You don't just get to play 1500 point words whenever and where ever you want. If the screenshot from words with friends is not faked (or planned) that play was pure chance. In a regular game of scrabble opportunities like that never happen. That being said alienangel2 is correct. High scoring words aren't a good players goal. Playing smart is. You play tight to force your opponents to play out and open multipliers. You play tiles you don't want to stall for a better placement or to get tiles you need to bingo. Then when the opportunity to play a bomb if you will you take and make you enemies weep...

Scrabble is life and life is hell...

[–]alienangel2 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Playing 1500 point words is a great idea if you have a 1500 point word to play. I don't know anyone who has ever had a 1500 point word to play though, so this isn't what I'm talking about. I'm saying if you're 20 points in the lead and there are 6 tiles left in the pile, playing a long word for 6 points and grabbing up all the remaining tiles is likely better than playing a short word for 8 points and giving your opponent the chance to grab good letters. Similarly jumping at the chance to play a 20 point word instead of a 15 point one is bad if the former puts a triple word + double letter combo in your opponents reach while the latter opens up nothing at all in terms of opening new areas of the board.

FWIW, you'll notice that even this 1500 point word isn't built on its own, it's done by filling in holes in an existing grid - this is how you make the most points, combining multipliers and applying multipliers in both directions.

[–]0311 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Have you ever played Scrabble?

EDIT: Oh....I bet you meant that in general, it's not always best to play the highest valued word, not that this specific move wasn't the best.

[–]alienangel2 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yes I meant in general, and more for things like WiF, since I've never played Scrabble through a computer anyway - trial and error on an actual scrabble board tends to not go down well. Quixotry is a delicious word, but if your opponent grabbed 6 letters with his last word, it might be better to play just your QI for 21 points and seal off a convenient double word score opportunity than to play Quixotry and claim say 27 while leaving that opening for him.

[–]Justinsaccount 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Actually.. quixotry is one of those words you would know if you ever looked at a scrabble word list. It's the longest word you can make with a q or something like that.

[–]kevka 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Maybe q and x. I can think of a lot of words that have a q in them that are longer.

[–]Justinsaccount 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Oh, that sounds right. Maybe it was the highest scoring word you can make with a q. Anyway, I have no idea what it means, but I do know that it's a word :)

[–]RDandersen 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Quincunx is just as long with Q and X.

(Thank you 3rd Rock from the Sun)

[–]alienangel2 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

There are actually many such sites :) I don't know if any give you the optimal word, but they offer a variety of ways to find possible words.

Also in games like WIF where there's no penalty to trying an invalid word, you can just keep trying words yourself without a site. Even without using a site like the above, I am way better at WiF than I am at real scrabble, because I can sit there thinking about what the highest possible combination of letters could be with what I have available, then try it out, and repeat that with the next highest word I can think of, till one sticks. This makes it more a game of strategically denying good positions to your opponent and encouraging him to open up a good position for you than a game of actually having a good vocabulary, which is why I don't use these websites, since while they give you one good word, they ignore the strategy of planning future moves.

Scrabble nerd here. Everything on the board is legit, it's just highly, highly, highly unlikely that this game played out. No one has ever "triple-triple-tripled" (as is the term) officially, although plenty have dreamt up scenarios where it would be possible.

[–]rnelsonee 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Definitely fake, but note they didn't 'triple-triple-triple' - they "only" double-tripled-tripled since this is the WWF board, not the Scrabble board :)

I just played Haji against my sister, so I think she thinks I'm cheating - I typed it in just trolling to see if it worked - turns out it's an alternate spelling. Also, Hajj if you have two J's.

[–]explodeder 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

There are a ton of non-western origin words that end in J (or have a j in a weird place) you can play.

Try Djinn if you really want to freak her out.

obviously set up. who would leave 2 triple letters, 2 triple words, and a double word open?

At first I thought it was a joke about peise looking like penis... Then I saw 1400 points. Clearly fake though.

Of course those expert players would have left the two TWs open. That makes perfect sense.

People cheat, and make the game suck. I used to play all the time then got tired of people obviously cheating.

[–]overtoke 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

it means friend. also, it's really simple to cheat on these games, as there are word builders, word lists, and even sites that let you recreate the entire board. if the game is legit, coming up with the word would be trivial.

Word solvers? Just do it yourself:

Thanks, I've been looking for a list of words for my word game. I assume this is suitable for scrabble?

[–]stellareddit 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I don't know about Scrabble, but it's the list that the Words with Friends app uses.

Also if you play pass and play with a friend, you can pretty much come up with how you want the board to end up, then keep passing and swapping tiles until you can do it legitimately.

Hi. This is the 2nd result in a google search for "ami". A male friend, is the definition.

It's French in origin, but it gives a World English Dictionary entry. Words With Friends isn't known for being notoriously accurate. I'm not saying the picture wasn't 'shopped, but this gives it an ounce more of credibility.

[–]happycj 1 point2 points ago

It shows him having played all 7 characters, yet there are still two in his tray. How does that work?

[–]squipple 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Use all your letters, and 2 are left in the bag. You auto-draw the 2 letters after your play.

Man, his name is so long you can't even see his whole score (which i assume is pretty long as well).

[–]BluLite 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's actually the score that is so long that you can't see all of it. It truncates name and score separately. The only way to truncate score is if you have four digits, and the only way to get four digits is to cheat like this (both players playing to purposefully set up this word).

[–]planet808 0 points1 point ago

This has almost zero to do with skill as it does to do with sheer luck. Any competitive scrabble player will tell you that the probability of this occurring is much more astounding than someone realizing that the play can be made.

RESIGN!

[–]Anderlan 0 points1 point ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I wish WWF or any scrabble game had the board do gaudy special effects after every move--gaudier and more intense depending on score, number of words formed, word and letter score spaces used, etc. Just a flash of light on the letters placed and words formed for basic plays, but a blinding 30 second long explosion for those rare multi-hundred point blowouts. A Scrabble Ball Z, if you will. Maybe also a verbal attaboy like "DOMINATION!" or "GOD-LIKE!"
