  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  6. No animated images. Please submit them to /r/gif, /r/gifs, or /r/reactiongifs instead.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

Somewhere down there, Jeremy Clarkson is complaining about something to someone.

Worse than that, someone is actually taking him seriously.

More than 2000 people in England don't have a sense of humor. Who knew?

I don't live in England, so I'm not one of the 2000, but I do not think the comments he made on Wednesday were joking, whether he claims that they were or not.

He posed two ridiculously opposing extremist views and said there and then quite directly that he didn't back either, he just gave two opinions. That was funny in itself. 350 million people aren't worng. ;)

Jeremy rarely says a serious word on TV, it's one of the reasons Top Gear has 350million viewers a show.

Here's the view from the Citigroup center a couple days ago.

We don't really have skyscrapers, but we're working on it.

[–]sandwichboy321 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It says it would be the tallest building in the E.U. but it's "only" a little over 1000 ft. tall. Why exactly aren't there skyscrapers in Europe? I mean here in the U.S. it was a race to see who had the biggest architectural cock in the 1930's so in places like New York or Chicago the buildings are massive. The new World Trade Center is going to be 1,776 ft tall and that's fucking huge.

[–]dave1233 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Id imagine its because in the most expenisve parts of european cities there is already buildings there that are very old. Some in london go back tot he 1600's. So i guess they didnt want to knock them down. So then when they chose land further out it was cheaper and building a skysraper wasnt justified. I dunno maybe that has soemthing to do with it. Could be wrong tho.

Uh, might want to back up a little further. European cities are ancient. My high school is nearly 500 years old.

U mad bro?

[–]sdezigns 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

As dave 1233 said, most cities in Europe had existing real estate in their city centers, this coupled with planning (zoning in the states) laws to limit the heights of new buildings and stay in keeping with the local aesthetics and environment helped maintain a lower building height in general.

Furthermore, London public and the UK in general have very strong negative feelings about modern architecture, partly stemming from experiences in the 60s and 70s when hi-rise apartment blocks replaced a lot of the social housing. After the first few architecturally designed buildings proved successful, contractors started cutting costs and this eventually resulted in a number of building collapsing. An other factor the stigmatized hi-rise buildings in the UK, was a social issue that presented itself after the social housing was opened up to long term unemployed, and the introduction of families from different backgrounds into areas that were traditionally quite well integrated.
Finally, I personally believe that the British public generally look back at the Victorian era as the golden age of art and architecture and even today would rather emulate it, than embrace our own time and its aesthetics.

[–]me-tan 2 points3 points ago

You mean like everywhere most of the time? Is there some kind of stereotype about fog in the UK that I don't know about? I thought people in the states just thought it rained all year.

I never think of European cities having sky scrapers. I mean, I know they do, but I think it's so culturally ingrained to be "old world" that you don't think "modern".

I mean, hell, I only know there are tall buildings in London because of Doctor Who.
