Lydia is like Dogmeat in the original fallout games, npc's that have been with you from the beginning can get caught in a minigun burst and restarting from the beginning of the mutant base is too much of a hassle but whenever Dogmeat dies it's an instant reload. Lydias the same way for me, she's like when I get a girlfriend in a hentai game who ends up feeling like a real girlfriend but then I reach the point in the game where I am turned into a tentacle monster while making love to her and I cry and apologize for what I'm about to do to her in a minute when I'm a monster as she screams and tries to run away but I involuntarily hook her leg with a tentacle and drag her sobbing hysterically back to the bed. Usually I hit "remember true self" as fast as I can so my tentacle demon form isn't that hard on her and I return to myself again and we collapse sobbing in each others arms, but she realizes I couldnt control myself and did everything I could to stop her from being triple penetrated by a demon. The first time around though I just save the game and let the demon rape play out and get off to her being inflated till she looks 30 months pregnant with my demon semen and her pupils retract to tiny points and she's foaming at the mouth and when I'm finally done ejaculating she twitches on the floor catatonic and ends up in a mental institution. Sure I let that happen but then I just reload and in an hour we're having a pizza party and making love under the stars on a deserted island in a secluded lake.

            Give her an upgraded one-hander that is enchanted and she will always choose it. But given the choice between an iron sword and an iron warhammer she will pick the one with higher base damage to her, even if you'd rather her block.

                I lost her pretty early on at an outside bandit camp. And I didn't see she died, I thought she was just bugged out or something. Ended up doing a dungeon or two before I finally tracked down what happened to her.

                Now I kinda wish I had loaded my last save. Not to use her for a companion. (I like areana better) but because she would be hanging out in my house

                I guess I'm weird, I don't give a shit about companions in Skyrim as I feel they steal my thunder, potential skill ups and cramp my stealth style. There's nothing more infuriating than stealthing into position just to have your companion try to path right through the enemies, revealing your position. The only time I have a companion is when it's time to sacrifice somebody to some random Daedric Lord.

                My Lydia died in an epic battle with a Ice Wizard during the A Night To Remember quest. Her death was so worthy I couldn't bring myself to undo it, even though I miss her sarcastic ass.

                  She also died on me. I half cleared out a dungeon filled with wizard cunts and was swiftly transported to Misty Grove as part of some inconsequential quest. Upon completing this tedious quest, I was promptly transported back to Skyrim, but my dear Lydia was nowhere to be found. Maybe she returned to my home in Whiterun? No. Perhaps she is in Dragonsreach, attending a formal dinner with the Jarl? No. I am stricken with both grief and anger. I know where she is. That dungeon was the last place Lydia stood by my side, she must be there. Was she slain by one of the wizards? I picture the worst case scenario in my mind.

                  As I frantically search the several bodies which decorated the dungeon's floor, I soon realise that Lydia isn't among them. What have they done with her? There is a dark hallway which I hadn't seen before. I wander into a room where I see a lone wizard laying in his bed. You bastard. What have you done with Lydia? Without hesitation, I unsheathe my harbinger of doom. "You will pay with your blood." I slay him in his sleep and soon-after search his room for evidence of Lydia's presence. Nothing.

                  I continue down this dark corridor, but I am not prepared for what I find. A wizard, laughing to himself, it was the most blood curdling laugh I have ever heard. He stood outside a cell. This cell was full of incinerated bodies. "You sick fuck." He sees me and laughs maniacally. "It was you, wasn't it? You took her!" Nothing more needed to be said; this monster will pay for what he has done. As I sprinted towards him, Skyforge steel in my hand, I thrust my blade into his torso. Sweet revenge. His limp body falls to the floor. I couldn't bring myself to enter that cell. All those bodies, so badly burnt that identification would be impossible. Lydia was in there. I just knew it. I could feel it. Her death had been avenged, but I'm still left with that empty feeling inside. Lydia, my love, you will never have to carry my burdens again.

                        Mine can get the shit kicked out of her by dragons, vampires, magical ghosts, etc. and the moment she's about to die she just kneels down and every enemy ignores her until she comes back. Is this a glitch or is my Lydia just a badass?

                        I don't even know what happened to her. I didn't pay much attention to her, she was kind of useless in fights, and she randomly disappeared for long stretches but would usually appear if I fast traveled.

                        It took me quite a while to realize I hadn't seen her in a while, so I'm just assuming she died while I was battling some bandits.

                                I agree with your emphasis on the ALWAYS. Against my better judgment, I've stayed up an extra hour or two on a work night just to be on the surface when I saved. The map functionality is good, so you probably wouldn't get lost, but it really kills the immersion of the dungeon and oft-used mini story arc for each dungeon.

The worst is itching to play while at work all day and getting home only to have to run around and sell loot and put books on bookshelves. I want to load and get right into the action.

Like GreenENTity said, you can sacrifice her (haven't come upon this yet, only heard about it), but when she is near death she will yield and sit there and everything will stop attacking her. If there is an AoE attack/splash damage or you are behind her, she can get in the way of someone attacking you, she can die from that when in this state.

                                        In relevant news, I logged in today to being assaulted by the whole town of Riften. I don't even know what I did. I jsut logged in and there were fifteen guards and people hitting me. I ran around trying to figure out what I did. Turned out, looking at my last 3 autosaves, that I was in Mistveil Keep. I entered only to find the sons of the Jarl dead on the floor. I...don't remember doing that. Last thing I did before going to bed was getting Dawnbreaker. I do not recall going to Riften and killing anyone before logging off. Did I really do all that in my drowsiness?

                                          I spent a summer doing shrooms every saturday afternoon. The one thing I did every time was play Spiderman 2. I would jump off buildings and try and shoot webs at the last second before I hit the ground. Eventually I would just slowly rock back and forth at the end of a web rope listening to the people screaming for help below. Video games and drugs are fun, except Manhunt.                                               You must have never played Daggerfall. Daggerfall dungeons were huge labyrints were you could easily lose yourself for hours and hours and hours.

                                              Skyrim "dungeons" are just long tunnels where you only have to go forward, kill everything and fetch the quest item with the big white arrow over it, after that a door will appear that will conveniently take you to the exit.

                                              I am reminded that the dungeons in Skyrim is kind of Moria-esque. You get lost in darkness and traps all the way, find a big 'showdown room' with a big baddie. Then suddenly, the exit.

                                              I didnt have the money to buy the game right now, so I rented it from redbox, got completely addicted, and then had to take it back. I'm going to be so unbelievably lost when I finally do buy it... May end up just starting over :(

                                              I did this with Twilight Princess.

                                              I got to the Water Temple, didn't play for a few days, then forgot what the fuck I was doing so I restarted.

                                              Then I did exactly the same thing again.

                                              Haven't played Skyrim (I know...) but this is how I always felt with Fallout 3. I'll play a game intensely for a week or so, then kinda fall in line focusing on something else, then come back and completely forget what the hell quest I was on, or what I had prioritized in-game. These open-world games really require a commitment.
