I just woke up (6 hours early for me) due to a call from work (I'm on call tonight) that ended up being a false alarm. I am not yet fully awake. When I'm still loopy from being woken from a deep sleep, preposterous suggestions sound as reasonable to me as they would in a dream. I read your suggestion for soap bubbles and I got all excited before I remembered that we don't really have a big literal hole in our chests. I don't know if I should fully wake up so that ideas like this won't sound plausible to me at first, or if I should go back to sleep so ideas like this will be real to me.

Go back to dreamland where your dreams came true. And I think that was scientifically confirmed, to the human brain dreaming activates the exact same areas as if you were experience it in "real life" (or maybe what we called Dreams is Real Life and we live in a Dream till we go to sleep, we can't know for sure)

Hijack.

I've been smoking marijuana most nights before I head to bed for about a year or two. I noticed that I would not remember my dreams. Perhaps I had none at all. It only took one night of cessation for me to realize dreams again in my sleep. Maybe sleeping so many dreamless nights had made me forget how vividly dreams can appear. I cannot be sure.

The night I did not smoke I dreamt a dream of a sexual nature. I will not go into much detail here. It was rather mundane. However, soon after aforementioned sexual encounter my genitals fell off completely intact as if the base were constructed out of Play-Doh. There was no tissue damage, tearing, bleeding, etc., only an empty, hairless bulge where my penis had been moments earlier. It looked like the positive end of a socket, somewhat. Suffice it to say, I became extremely worried. Anxious. I began asking people in the dream to take me to the hospital but they were all too busy. I don't remember how exactly I arrived at the conclusion, but I realized I must be in some sort of dream. So, I began pinching myself, slapping myself in the face but to no avail. I remember clearing smashing my head against mirrors, wardrobes, walls, and still I would not wake. I began to doubt my initial presumption that I was in a dream. Soon I was contemplating the lonely, dickless existence that would inevitably become my future. I wept.

When I finally awoke, I was unsure that I was actually occupying reality. It was a truly unsettling feeling. I cannot fully express my delight when I discovered that my genitals were still attached to my person. It instilled me with a sense of purpose I have not felt in years. The joy was tangible, like a halogen light had been transplanted into my chest.

That was Monday.

I can't give enough upvotes for that... I believe I dreamed something like that once, but I've never dreamed a dream (duh) where I was aware it was a dream. Yo dawg.

[–]Wagnerj 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Just fyi, mj reduces REM sleep, when you dream. Also, you missed a really good opportunity to lucid dream. Next time you think you are dreaming, read some text three times to see if it changes to confirm your dreamstate. Pinching doesn't work.

[–]veganatheist 6 points7 points ago

I like to check my watch when I'm in a dream. I never wear a watch awake, but when I look it's there and the time is never the same or chronological. For some reason I never have my cell phone in dreams, which is usually where I get my time.

Did everyone keep their puzzle piece with them and if they saw someone that looked like a "match" they'd see if it fit? That sounds like one of those disturbingly beautiful short films.

I love this comic, I have seen it so many times and it still reminds me that independence is a beautiful thing. Although I'm not certain this needs to be in r/atheism as it isn't a solely atheist comic. I read it as an ode to individuality, and that people who lack their own identity (or wish to lose it), will attempt to fill the void in their life (identity) with pre-minted cause/ideal/identity. The punchline is in the rejection of conformity and finding beauty in the different. Be it stuff, religion, or a relationship, this comic is about what it means to be unique.

This comic is pretty literate in it's symbolism and should be used as an intro to symbolism and themes in classic literature, but I don't think that this comic is a confirmation of what it means to be atheist as atheists can be just as likely to "fill their hole" with stuff or another person. Instead, this comic, like any piece of literature, should leave the interpretation to the reader's imagination, and if you read this as an atheist comic, it is entirely within your right to do so.

[–]bhindblueyes430 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

A fairly quick Googling comes up with this image: http://26.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_lfyzrvo3Tg1qcv7dqo1_500.jpg which shows that there's a bit at the bottom that cut out from the posted one. Looks like this was filler during the "Hob" story, between pages 7 and 8, on account of a broken tablet. It doesn't seem to be in the actual archives anymore, but it's been scattered far and wide across tumblr.

This has happened many times, once after going for a swim and her tit was suction cupped into it and made a noise when extracting it. However more times than not, me being 6'3" most girls are much shorter than me and when receiving a hug their face is lost in the hole.

[–]I-never-win-shit 1 point2 points ago

Well, in a car I cant really use it as such because I am sitting up right. However in the movie theaters, I can put a large ass cup in that thing and the straw is perfectly positioned at my mouth.

[–]arkain123 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That feeling is 100% explained if you study some psychoanalysis.

[–]Bilbo_Fraggins 2 points3 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I must say I'm not convinced. Psychoanalysis gives words for things,in a sort of self-consistant framework, but it doesn't actually seem to explain anything any better than, say, Buddism.

Cognitive science on the other hand, actually explains things, in that we can reduce our "theory of mind", "hyper-active agency detection", etc which conspire to give us those feelings all the down through biology though natural selection to physics.

We've got all the pieces of how it likely happened now, and we can verify parts of the story through other animals that survive today with partial adaptions for some of those things, which have arisen multiple times.

I highly recommend the book in my original post. I started writing my own series on apparent teleology and stopped to point people to the that book instead because the book is that good.

[–]arkain123 -1 points0 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

So you just dismiss an entire field of science like that, huh.

[–]Bilbo_Fraggins 1 point2 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Don't get me wrong, I'm a fan of psychoanalysis to a certain extent: My son is in a school for kids with emotional difficulties (He exhibits symptoms consistent with early onset bipolar)that all but worships Freud and his successors, and they have been very useful to him. It's just that that view of human thought doesn't really explain things in the reductionist way that we usually use the term "explain". That doesn't mean it's not useful in some way.

I'm by no means alone in this point of view.

Psychoanalysis may be a useful art, but I'm not convinced it's a science, and it certainly doesn't explain things in the way cognitive science does.

Also, I can't believe you're dismissing Buddhism like that with a wave of your hand. ;-)

If you wanna pull an english teacher move and overthink this, you could say something like when people try to fill a void in them with certain things, it isn't as great as just leaving it alone and keeping yourself clear and open. All of those other things could weigh you down, like getting a girlfriend to fill that hole...or filling your girlfriend's hole...but if you ugh I'm just gonna stop I don't know what I'm saying.

reminds me of a quote:

“Because here's something else that's weird but true: in the day-to day trenches of adult life, there is actually no such thing as atheism. There is no such thing as not worshipping. Everybody worships. The only choice we get is what to worship. And the compelling reason for maybe choosing some sort of god or spiritual-type thing to worship -- be it JC or Allah, bet it YHWH or the Wiccan Mother Goddess, or the Four Noble Truths, or some inviolable set of ethical principles -- is that pretty much anything else you worship will eat you alive. If you worship money and things, if they are where you tap real meaning in life, then you will never have enough, never feel you have enough. It's the truth. Worship your body and beauty and sexual allure and you will always feel ugly. And when time and age start showing, you will die a million deaths before they finally grieve you. On one level, we all know this stuff already. It's been codified as myths, proverbs, clichés, epigrams, parables; the skeleton of every great story. The whole trick is keeping the truth up front in daily consciousness.”

(Long) Philosoraptor moment:

If you fill the large hole in your chest with someone else who also has a large hole in their chest...

Can it be chained until everyone except the innermost person has their chest hole filled?

I thought individual thought was banned in r/atheism?

Short answer: Nope.

Long answer:

Actually, individual thought is banned in religious settings (and more or less anything promoting the status quo). Think of it as "fine, think whatever you want, just don't share your personal opinion or you'll be seen as an enemy of the Church/State/society".

Everyone here in /r/atheism has their own opinion, and sometimes we disagree with each other. (It's just now shown on this particular subreddit. Some of us are pro-choice, others pro-life; Some absolutely despise religion, others tolerate it; Some believe in free market capitalism, others have socialist tendencies; Some are pro-piracy and anti-copyright; Others believe piracy is wrong; some are fans of Ayn Rand, and others consider her one of the worst philosophers that set foot on the planet.

The thing is that here we don't talk about topics that belong in other subreddits. This brings the illusion of a hivemind.
