Ah, so it's to be as large as a city block.

That explains the 24 wheels.

They would actually steal it moments before the photons were burned onto the film but allowing enough time for the film to receive just enough light. Which means that there will be a brief period where the car no longer exists and the film has yet to have an imaged burned onto it, since the photons will have yet to hit the film.

Dammit, I want to downvote you because these two cars obviously look nothing alike. But at the same time by clicking your link I learned "The Nucleon is the inspiration for the cars scattered throughout the landscape of the video games Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas."

So just take the upvote and let's never speak of this again.

[–]sordfysh 3 points4 points ago

Biggest problem: when shot at, those cars explode like a small nuclear bomb.

Source: Fallout 3

[–]jimmysaint13 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The thing about why the Nucleon was a horrible idea and why this could actually work is that the Nucleon was using regular fuel-grade radioactive materials for the time, like Uranium.

Thorium is markedly less radioactive than fuel-grade Uranium or Plutonium,, to the point where it takes frequent long-term exposure to give you anything even resembling radiation sickness. This is due to its extremely low neutron output during decay and such emissions are relatively very easy to shield against. Reacting temperatures for Thorium usually reach a standard temperature of around 1,000o C, and it's melting point is around 1,800o C, which makes the danger of a meltdown negligible.

Plus, it's abundant. As hell. When mining for rare-earth metals, so much Thorium is dug up in the process it is considered a nuisance. Junk material.

In theory, using a system like the Cadillac WTF would have, in which a small Thorium reactor provides power to charge batteries which then power the wheels, combined with inertia-recycling systems like we see already in use by modern Hybrid cars, and highly efficient aerodynamics, it is entirely possible that, if produced, the Cadillac WTF could have an infinite range. If not infinite, most definitely high-range to the point where you could take it road tripping and never have to worry about running out of juice.

[–]darlantan 9 points10 points ago

Man, I hate concept cars. They go to all that trouble just to say "hey, fuckers! Look what we could build if we really wanted to. But we're going to just build a bunch more boxes on wheels and never let you buy the awesome car you always wanted."

Concept cars: when engineers troll.

Ok, I'm all for this kinda thing, but one of the graphics on the website shows the temperature inside the core to be above 1000 degrees. How do you radiate that off a car? If it were ever exposed, it could melt through the concrete of a road. Also, would the reactor be on contiuously?

This is a 3d render with pretty weak compositing;

  • there are smoothing errors all over the front grill, making that dusty look.
  • I like the magically flat sidewalk where someone just slapped a texture on a flat plane
  • I also like how the car has a lot sharper detail than everything around it, especially those bricks which also are magically flat.
  • Who parks a car up a sidewalk, honestly.

This is not a Cadillac, nor it has any connection with that company. From this article - Fact Checking the Cadillac World Thorium Fuel, author got this response from Cadillac:

We did not produce that concept. It was rendered by a freelance designer as a creative/visionary exercise. I don’t have a lot of details on the how’s and why’s of its creation….it just sort of appeared. We’re pleased that our Art & Science design was inspirational…..but outside of that, we don’t really have a view on it.
