I want to know why cats do this. I mean humans cuddle things for emotional reasons (correct me if I am wrong). I have seen cats cuddle other things, but I have always wonder if they do it out of cat emotion or to feel like they are protecting the thing they are cuddling.

I need a cat emotion expert.

I don't know for sure, but if you've ever had a cat and have ever watched it sleep, if the cat wakes up it will often stretch its arms and bring them towards their bodies as if grabbing at something. In exactly the way they do in these pics except nothing is there... if that makes sense. I honestly always thought they were just stretching, and think that the teddy bear or the real cat being in these two gifs is just coincidence. I really don't think they think "oh looks soft lets hug it"

Oh GOD finally someone who understands. Myself as a person who has had cats since forever, I was amused after my friends told me about this video: Heyyy look this is so cute, the mamma cat hugs the kitten...ooohhhh...tulips and daisies...no muthafuckas the cat is not hugging anything she is just stretching. The kitten just happened to stand between her legs at that time. Pure coincidence.

You don't need a cat expert. Just some simple cross-referencing on neurology and biology. Cats are mammals, and all mammals have limbic systems (aka 'midbrain') in their brains. Limbic systems are responsible for allowing emotions to be felt. It is very realistic to assume that cats do, indeed, feel emotion to offspring similar to how we humans do.

EDIT: The limbic system is only half of the midbrain. The other is the autonomic nervous system.
