Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

Wow, d3x really? This just goes to show that having an $8,000 camera does NOT guarantee good photos, especially when processed with shitty HDR, obscuring what could have been sharp noise-free detail with glow and shitty saturation.

[–]AQUA2 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It just goes to show you that good photographers take good pictures. That's all there is to it.

[–]Yossarian22685 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yup, and thats why I hate when people see one of my cameras and say "well if I had that camera I'd be able to take great photos too"...people can produce great photos with a cell phone camera, just gotta have the artistic vision and technical knowledge. The expensive equipment just gives greater sharpness and versatility.

[–]SniperFists 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's not just mountains, but hills in general. There are some incredibly steep ones in Seattle--driving manual there is NOT fun (unless you're into that sort of thing). Plus it's a bitch to walk most places.

[–]mkvgtired 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

All my cars have been manual. No need for brakes at the stop light here. Flat as a pancake. I have driven in the mountains and yeah, manual can suck sometimes. But it is SO fun on winding mountain roads. As you can see from the picture, none of those in sight.

Its ok I love this city enough to want to stay here. I love visiting other places.

From the Flickr page

I took this from on top of one of the highest buildings in Chicago. Everyone else was shooting in the other direction - towards all the big buildings. Well, I did too to be honest... but, then I came over here... looking out this way was strangely compelling, so I decided to give it a go! :)

Isn't that the Eisenhower going west there, intersecting the Dan Ryan?

[–]SexySmiles 4 points5 points ago

Sure is. I would say it's the Sear's (two blocks north of Eisenhower).

Fazlur Rahman Khan (Bengali: ফজলুর রহমান খ়ান Fozlur Rôhman Khan) (April 3, 1929 - March 27, 1982) was a Bangladeshi born architect and structural engineer. He is a central figure behind the "Second Chicago School" of architecture,[1] and is regarded as the "Father of tubular design for high-rises".[2] Khan, "more than any other individual, ushered in a renaissance in skyscraper construction during the second half of the twentieth century."[3] He has been called the "Einstein of structural engineering" and the "Greatest Structural Engineer of the 20th Century" for his innovative use of structural systems that remain fundamental to modern skyscraper construction.[4] His most famous buildings are the John Hancock Center and the Sears Tower, which was the world's tallest building for several decades.

Hope he can fix them. It is such an amazing view, it is really hard to capture in a picture. Some I found, citations in the URLs.

Compared to the UK Americans know how to to organise a city

Compared to Europe in general American and Canadian cities are much more grid-like. They were built much later and therefore planned.

New York was kind of a front runner in this new trend. It had a much more European organization. They dropped the grid street system over the old city, demolishing many buildings to do so. Now we have what is there today. Since then most North American cities have been organized this way.

Some pics of Chicago. I dont remember who took some of them. I used to have much more, but they were on my old computer.

You can thank the Chicago fire for that. They essentially got a Mulligan. Boston is proof that Americans also know how to throw up on a piece of paper and decide to build a city by that pattern.

Boston was built when cities were not largely planned. NYC made the decision early on to build a grid system. Yes the Chicago fire gave the city a chance to be planned. The later a city was built seems like the more likely it was to be planned. Obviously most European cities were built before planning was popular. Some American ones were as well, including Boston.

This isn't a photo, it's a Photoshop composition loosely based on a photo, just like everything else in that poseur's collection.

Soldier Field would be behind and to the left of the photographer (SW).
