  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

I did it on xp( if i remember) long ago. I made a gif. with a roach that would crawl accross the screen every 90 seconds. It would pretty much stop my computer cold. I think I had to boot in to safe mode to get rid of it.

'Twas "YouWillRegretIt". Linked to a website with a url shortener and hyperlinked text that said "Ahhh, nostalgia." or something to that effect. Sent me to a website that probably was infected with some kind of virus or malware and I think had a picture of a snail wrapped around a guy's genitals. Didn't really stay too long to look at it.

If you are using RES, look to the right of someone's user name. There are two parentheses hugging an underscore. Click on the underscore and type away. You can even choose a color for them!!

In Vista you could set a video as your background. So, seeing how that was one of the cooler features of Vista, it was removed in Win7.

After actually studying the machine I'm working on at work (which was previously used by the person I replaced), they have a program on here called "Wallsaver". From my understanding, it turns screen savers into desktop background. The person I replaced turned the Corgi gif file into a screensaver and then applied it in this "Wallsaver" program. Wallsaver seems to only be Mac compatible. There might be a Windows equivalent though..

There is also a series of terminal commands you can type which allows you to set your screen savers as your desktop.

*Edit: The command is: /System/Library/Frameworks/ScreenSaver.framework/Resources/ScreenSaverEngine.app/Contents/MacOS/ScreenSaverEngine -background

The way to get moving backgrounds with Windows 7 is by using something called "Windows DreamScene"

It was supposed to be the new version of 98's Active Desktop but was discontinued because it was seen as being too unstable. It still is present in every single Windows Machine but you have to activate it through the register or with a program that does that for you

Now you can use entire videos as your background. Enjoy!

For Windows XP this works: copy the image URL http://i.imgur.com/aBHkh.gif Then right click your desktop and click Properties then click Desktop, then Customize Desktop then click Web then click New and paste the image URL into the URL box then click Ok and Apply and the dogs will power your computer, yee

EDIT: you can add multiple GIFs too and if you uncheck "lock desktop items" and you can resize and move them around

There's a way to have an animated background on Vista and 7 as well, through Dreamscene. Basically you need to activate it (just google dreamscene windows 7 or something), then convert the source video to mpg or wmv, right-click this new video file and "Set as wallpaper".

Sadly don't have video conversion tools at work, I'm sure someone else can provide a converted file.

e: And before someone asks, it actually doesn't drain performance all that much. It uses Windows's new hardware acceleration, and stops the animation whenever a fullscreen game or program comes up. The real challenge is not being annoyed by an annoying constantly animated wallpaper.
