Pic taken from different distances at different zooms, however maintaining the size of the original object at each zoom. So from far away, the photographer zoomed in which makes the background appear closer. From close in, the photographer zoomed out which makes things in the background appear further away. Cool effect.

Dolly Zoom, aka "Zolly" or "Hitchcock Zoom" This graphic sums it up best I think ;).

When I came to this thread, I was planning on creating exactly this to explain the effect. Perfect! Thank you!

As you zoom in, your focus length shortens, and vice versa. If you move the camera in as you zoom out, the object in the center remains the same size, but your field of view shifts around it. When you can see the object int his clip, as well as the far background and foreground, the camera is zoomed out and right on top of the object. When you can only see a few feet around the object, the camera is zoomed in and far away from the object.

Reminds me of the scene in Goodfellas where Robert DeNiro is sitting across from Ray Liotta in that restaurant, and the camera zooms in while moving backwards simultaneously. Very cool effect.

Really old-school effect for creating claustrophobia around the subject.

Awesome.

You physically get closer as you zoom out. done. easy.

Concise yet accurate. Write some university textbooks or perhaps a revolutionary manifesto please

It appears to be a time-lapse of a camera changing its FOV (Field of View) and possibly panning at the same time to keep its focus on whatever that brick thing is. Pretty cool effect.

The point is...this was on the front page just a few days ago...with hundreds of comments that explain what it is

Not all of us spend 15 hours a day looking at reddit. We can't all be expected to see every single post that makes it to the front page, can we?

Telephoto lenses "Flatten" images. This is zoomed in at the same rate as the camera is moved towards that there concrete box thing. Making the perspective change, but the size of the concrete box whoosit stays the same, screwing with your brain.

Start totally zoomed in. Walk toward the subject, while simultaneously zooming out from it. Basically keep the object at a constant size. The depth of field shifts/stretches.

The reverse produces a pretty neat effect too... zoom in while walking away.

You can see this in action yourself with any still camera with a zoom. Just walk towards someone and zoom out simultaneaously. Here is some examples of good ones in film:

La Haine

Vertigo

Jaws

Anyone got any more?

Get a camera and zoom into something. As you walk towards the object, zoom the camera out. Zoom in as you walk backwards. This roughly the same thing.
