One of my favorite ever lines on 30 Rock happens directly after that:

Frank: "Wow, that was embarrassing for you."

[–]vbar44 18 points19 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

In spanish it's called verguenza ajena which roughly translates to "vicarious embarrassment"

[–]lediablerouge 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I like how this is basically the opposite of schadenfreude.

[–]mrbroom 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

"It makes me feel so...what's the opposite of that schadenfraude thing?"

"Sour grapes."

"Those Germans have a word for everything!"

[–]shawncplus 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

There's already a german word for it fremdschamen

[–]jaqq 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

fremdschämen

FTFY

And although it comes very close I think 'fremdschämen' has a slightly different meaning. More in the sense of cringing because you watch someone do something embarrassing and that makes you yourself embarrassed. The Office, for example, is full of fremdschämen-inducing scenes.

[–]Cuerzo 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That is exactly what 'vergüenza ajena' means in Spanish.

That scene was just genius writing I think. The fact that they have a dumb misogynist coming out with that line was wonderful.

I don't know if I agree with your characterization of TG. Lots of little moments of intelligence are written into the script for Tracy. This is why I find him so hilarious. His behavior is so outlandish that you assume that he's just an idiot, but if you pay more attention you will see these hilarious moments of insight from TG.

Kenneth: "The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing."

TG: "Please ask my permission before you quote me, Kenneth!"

[–]qovneob 19 points20 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Thats exactly why I love Griz and Dotcom. They rarely have any significant parts in the episodes but theyre almost always the most insightful, well-spoken people on the show.

[–]Abbelwoi 28 points29 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Dot Com: Actually, today’s Republican party would be unrecognizable to Lincoln. He fought a war to preserve federal authority over the states. That’s not exactly small government.

Jack: Dot Com, this need you have to be the smartest guy in the room is off-putting.

Dot Com: I guess that’s why I’m still single.

[–]skarcasm 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I think the series will end with them both taking Jack's job. They'll never get anything done because they won't be able to decide on the decor for their office.

TG?

[–]DHav123 28 points29 points ago

Tracy Gordon, obviously.

[–]TheRocketSurgeon[S] 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Not to be confused with Gordon Tracy. He nearly got as raw a deal as John Tracy, getting abandoned in space alone all the time.

[–]LightningGeek 1 point2 points ago

John Tracey was a dick though, he deserved it.

[–]sleepwithafryingpan 5 points6 points ago

mind grapes.

[–]Vocalities 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That's the episode that sold me on the show. I still laugh at that moment.

What else? What else is on my miiiind grapes?

[–]hypo11 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

A couple of other examples of Tracy's moments of intelligence:

1) The episode where he convinces Liz he is illiterate and she catches him on the elevator reading the newspaper: "Damn! George Will just gets more and more conservative."

2) When he and his entourage want to add a new member and he discovers that one of the candidates is at Cornell studying Hotel Management - "That's a good program!"

[–][deleted] 9 points10 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Or when Kenneth asks him if he will accept an offer to speak at a Cornell commencement ceremony. His reply: "Tracy Jordan doesn't do safety schools."

[–]TheRocketSurgeon[S] 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

TG?? TJ

I know he's like that, it's was just a TL;DR...

[–][deleted] 8 points9 points ago

Oops. I'm tired. TJ of course.

[–]stefan_89 1 point2 points ago

On the peripheral Tracy acts as an misogynist but deep down he is a loving man.

[–]actualscientist 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

My favorite of these moments is:

"How are you beating Kenneth, Griz? If Kenneth can beat me, and you can beat Kenneth, then by transitive property, you should beat me, too. Have you been letting me win?"

[–]WC_Dirk_Gently 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

He's not a misogynist, though, not truly, at least. He never even cheated on his wife.

[–]TheRocketSurgeon[S] -2 points-1 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

My bad. misogynist twat ;-)

[–]Plutor -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

No, no, no. Do not start doing this -- it is wrong. This is people who want to feel superior telling other people how to speak with total disregard for the actual rules of grammar. Here's a wonderful post about why "I'm doing good" is perfectly grammatical.

tl;dr - When someone asks "How are you doing?", would you answer "I'm hungry" or "I'm hungrily"?

[–]cpq29gpl 19 points20 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That post argues that "I am good" is proper. You can't use that same line of argument to defend "I am doing good".

[–]Twad 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Thanks a lot. I really miss adverbs.

[–]Plutor -3 points-2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I think you can. "How are you doing?" is not the same question as "What are you doing?". "Good" as a noun (in the Superman sense) only makes sense in the latter. In the former, doing is a (borderline nonce) linking verb, in which case an adjective like "good" is perfectly acceptable.

On the other hand, neither "I'm doing hungry" nor "I'm doing hungrily" make sense to my ear, so who knows.

[–]rsporter -3 points-2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

No. "I'm doing good" is perfectly fine. Do not, I repeat, do not listen to uneducated musings on the topic.

I work as a cashier and and get really self-conscious when someone replies to my "hi! how are you today?"'s with "well". They're judging me. I know it.

[–]MeloJelo 32 points33 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You would actually be grammatically correct in saying you are "good." Using "well" as a modifier for a person specifically references quality as of health, whereas "good" conveys a more general state of positive being.

It's when they are asking, "how are you doing?" that "well" is required to be grammatically correct; "doing" is a verb, and "well" is an adverb, while "good" is not.

[–]cardbross 0 points1 point ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

if you ask him how he's doing, he should still say 'well.' 'Good' would only be appropriate if you asked him what he is doing.

edit: to be clear: that's how she should respond if he accepts the grammatical argument that "I'm doing good" isn't an acceptable response to "how are you doing." This argument is based in grammar rules, not in the actual actions of the people in question.

[–]paintball312 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's the worst when they say "I'm doing well, how are you", and you "I'm doing pretty good" that's when the real judging commences, and it happens to me at least once every time I cashier.

[–]thebrew221 0 points1 point ago

What I hate about this, is I have a habit of just changing my diction up. So when someone says "I'm doing well, how are you?", half of the time I say "I'm doing pretty good". It's colloquially accepted enough that it doesn't kill me, but I feel guilty nonetheless.

[–]iBeenie 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Cashier here and I feel exactly the same way. I know "well" is the proper response, but I always get funny looks. It's the vernacular and unfortunately proper grammar can come off as snobby.

I suspect a linguist (one who isn't a prescriptivist, anyway) would suggest that Tracy is, in this scene speaking in the African American vernacular rather than standard English, which has it's own grammar rules, and in which the copula can be omitted. He's not wrong, he's just speaking a different dialect.

[–]Hmmphrey 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Using the same argument Toofer could be doing good after all.

[–]cardbross 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Honestly, you don't even need the 'Different dialects have different rules' justification. This article (that I stole from somewhere else in these comments) pretty convincingly argues that Toofer's usage is acceptable grammar on it's face.

That said, I'm kind of a grammar dork, still cringe when I say that I'm "doing good" rather than doing well, and consequently enjoy the joke.

[–]lediablerouge 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I believe it is now acceptable to reply, "doing good." I remember in high school my lit teacher told us about this council that votes on language changes and words being inducted into official use. They might even be affiliated with Websters.

Anyway, I'm almost positive that "doing good" is accepted vernacular. I think using "can I" in place on "may I" is also now acceptable.

Edit:

Thanks for the downvotes of completely uninformed ass clowns that is the grammar Nazi of reddit. Go fuck yourselves, I was right

I purposely say "doing good" just to spite all the pretentious faggots that get butthurt over it.

If someone tells me I'm using improper grammar, I usually just tell them I'm speaking a dialect they've probably never heard of.

Vernacular is not, by definition, necessarily in-line with formal grammar or literary language. Just because it's acceptable in everyday speech does not make it acceptable in formal writing or speeches.

I always thought he said "You need to study your grandma, son."

Actually, you can't be "doing well" unless you are referring to how good you are at "doing." You would need to say, "I'm well." You ARE well, you're not DOING well.

And on top of that, "well" technically refers to health. So I believe you can say, "I'm good," and that's ok.
