A subreddit for anything related to games (but not sports).

"Related" means that posts must contain gaming-related content in the link/post body, not just a "forced" connection via the title or a caption added to the content.

Posting Rules

  • Posts must be directly gaming-related. Thus, "generic" image macros/memes (where the character itself is not related to gaming) like Scumbag Steve, Good Guy Greg, etc. will be removed. Something that "reminds you of a game", or "looks like something from a game" is also not an appropriate submission; similarly, reaction GIFs are also not appropriate as submissions.

  • Following Reddiquette is encouraged

  • No "general" URL shorteners (bitly, tinyurl, etc). Single-site URL shorteners (such as youtu.be or fav.me) are allowed.

  • No game or product giveaway of any kind

  • NSFW submissions and comments must be labeled

  • Spoilers can be posted using the following formatting:
    [X Kills Y](/spoiler)
    Result: X Kills Y.

  • To mark a spoiler as relevant to a specific game/topic, use the alternate formatting:
    [Player 1 wins](/spoiler "Pong")
    Result:
    Player 1 wins

  • Report posts containing spoilers not using the above method

  • Don't post users' personal information.

Submission Rules

Is your post not showing up? Do not delete it. Wait 5 minutes to give AutoModerator a chance to look at it; it approves most submissions automatically. If it hasn't shown up after more than 5 minutes, simply message the moderators and ask us to let it through.

Surprised I had to do so much scrolling to find this.

It appears you have saved the day for me, no scrolling was needed. I can offer you but one grand upvote....

A short story of BobbyD84 most heroic of quests to find, recover and bring forth to the top of the page the "Ukraine is weak!" quote. It was but another day on reddit, fresh and ripe for the picking where the many links. It occurred to BobbyD84 to visit one of their most beloved sub reddits to take in all of the nostalgia it has to offer. Their mouse clicked numerous links before at last the moment they had been waiting for, a submission that had such infinitesimal connections to ones past. Their mind whirled with an assortment of thoughts regarding the game RISK.

Within but a bat of an eye the mere thought of Ukraine is weak seemed to approach the forefront of their mind and to the tip of their tongue. With great effort did one put forth to stop from shouting it out, all that was released was but a quick exhale of breath. When it came time to see whether or not this saying was to be on the top of all the comments, their heart sunk as it what seemed to be thought a common thought amongst the people of reddit was only their own. With great effort they scrolled with the fury of ten thousand souls finding this comment, if it did indeed exist at all. Comments were flying past as they scrolled away, at a quick glance one might think they had gone mad. Nay! Their eyes but like an eagles spotted the comment buried beneath a sea of thoughtless comments in comparison to these three words.

There was still hope in this world they though to themselves, they swiftly upvoted the comment and issued a reply. A plea of sorts that cried out unto this world "I AM HERE, AND I WILL NOT LEAVE THIS PLACE UNTIL MY WORK IS PERFECTED!"

I hope if anyone actually read this that you enjoyed it and it made sense, I enjoy to write stories when tired and this was the first of many to come if people enjoy them.

Me and some friends from high school tried playing turn a day diplomacy, and in all that spare time I managed to draw up detailed plans on how Me (England) and Spain and Italy could easily dismantle France and keep ourselves fortified against each other, assuring at least 6 moves of peace and at least one extra supply depot a piece. Sadly, (and not coincidentally, I might add) France was being played by the only girl amongst us, and it didn't take 2 moves for Spain to sell me out, forward all my plans to France, and then essentially fall on his sword so that she wouldn't be out of the game. I have not talked to that guy since. After that we stopped allowing girls.

Yeah, Risk sometimes drags a bit, but that's only a problem because you're going through the same actions again and again. This is a little long, but my friend and I found a new way of playing Risk that makes it quite a bit more strategic and deliberate, cutting down dice rolls without really increasing play time by much. Hours have passed like nothing:

NEW RISK RULES

Initial troop placement begins by selecting a capital for each army, something strategic (we went with Brazil and Yakutsk - place a nickel on each capital to avoid confusion). The territory cards are divided into three piles and one of the piles assigned to a "neutral" army, and three men of the "neutral" color (we used yellow) placed on each such country. These neutral troops won't be moved or attack, but you'll have to fight through them in order to take new territories. Troop placement for the other armies is determined not by the remaining cards but by alternating placement of individual troops on a country of each player's choice until no countries remain, then placing the rest of your allotted troops three at a time.

The order of gameplay and combat rules remain mostly unchanged, though two substantial new rules make things a little more deliberate:

  • All new troops must begin at your capital. The premise here is that you are essentially an occupying colonial army, and while the resources of each country you hold will fuel your war machine, loyal troops come from your own citizenry. Additionally, victory comes only from taking the opponent's capital. Moving troops for defense becomes as crucial, deliberate and fun as offense with these rules.

  • All troops may move only one space per turn. This includes armies moved following an attack, as well as fortifying armies moved within your territories. Any troops who move forward to a conquered territory following an attack are unable to move or attack any further (lay them on their side until your turn ends).

This introduces the new gameplay element of transportation through supply lines, and deemphasizes the role of massive armies in assuring victory. In Risk, you can get your foot in the door of a new continent, and then unleash dozens of new armies ex nihilo and tear through half of the continent on your next turn. Forcing each army to fan out and move more deliberately along a chain of occupied countries prevents this, as well as limiting the time you spend in combat each turn. You might expect the "one unit, one move" rule to lengthen games by a great deal, but in our experience not only was this not the case, but turns moved more quickly and strategically with these limitations.

NOTE: As part of our desire to encourage smaller, more strategic battles, we decided to remove the escalating army bonus for turning in three-card matches, instead planting it permanently at 6 armies. We also removed the "territories divided by 3" extra troops, leaving only 3 per turn and continent bonuses. This keeps battles smaller and more strategic - you can't just conquer all willy-nilly as controlling regions becomes crucial.

CARDS AS A RESOURCE

Special attack: Every turn, you have a chance to roll a die and attempt to convert enemy armies anywhere on the board. Roll a 5, convert enemies to neutral. Roll a 6, convert them to your side. If two colors of troops remain in a space they must fight out a civil war until only one color remains. The catch is that after rolling, your second roll determines how many troops you convert, and you can only convert troops up to the number of cards you currently hold. This introduces a small element of randomness and spices up turns, and introduces the decision of whether to hold onto cards for a passive bonus or spend them for troops on your current turn.

In three or more player Risk, that's really the best strategy. Take a small continent, or even part of a continent that no one is fighting over, and just build up your armies. Get four Risk cards (no more, so you aren't forced to turn them in.) Be completely inoffensive, give your opponents no reason to attack you whatsoever.

Wait until they have spent several turns decimating each other, and then turn in your Risk cards and go on an all-out offensive. 100% effective, 75% of the time.

[–]DecentOpinion 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Going for the easy continents is n00b stuff. If it's a large multiplayer game (4+) always go for Europe or N.A. They are totally open and everyone fights for the smaller continents, then you swoop in to finish off the loser of either S.A. or Africa.

If it's a smaller game (3-) just go for Africa.

[–]Presupposed 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

If you like fighting on two fronts for 2 armies per round, while the psychology of most every player is to prevent you from holding a whole continent regardless of which.. Australia is the only viable early game continent to hold.

[–]Griff_Steeltower 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah dude 'cause Aussie has nowhere to go after. If you nab SA you have all your armies neatly poised to take Africa, or even NA if the getting is good. And THEN you either have NA or Europe to take afterwards, which is the next logical step and again you can pick the less contested.

SA is where it's at.

[–]CaffeinatedGuy 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

South America is just a stepping stone to North America. Once I own the Americas, the game is mine.

Once I own the Americas, I will amass my armies just outside my 3 boundary countries, just inside Africa, Asia, and Europe. This keeps people from getting the continent bonus. All they have left is little ol' Australia to hide in.

Sure, they can attack my armies at the borders, but gaining 8 armies a turn plus my country count just puts my armies back every single time.

I don't lose Risk.

[–]longshot2025 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's hard to do, but once a player has North America they can become basically unstoppable. Of the continents with big payoffs, NA is by far the easiest to defend. Not only are there only three points of attack, but it's also easy to deny neighbors continent control. Seizing Venezuela, Iceland, and/or Kamchatka denies control of Europe, Asia, and South America without really expanding your own borders at all. I've turned Iceland into a massive fortress on multiple occasions for great results. From there it's easy to steamroll S. America and get a foothold in North Africa, and by that point the game is yours.

The trick is getting North America quickly, which is sometimes impossible. In that case, try the same from the South.

Fun story. A few years ago I had everyone over to my parents house for the holidays since everyone was back in town. We ended up playing Risk for hours.

My one friend can get a bit touchy about things, often for no reason. So we're just playing some Risk and he is getting dominated, mainly by me. I run his armies into his final terroritory, he can't do much on his role and I end up defeating him in battle. He gets very upset and storms off swearing and being pissed off and literally leaves the house right after this.

I find out the next day that he was pissed off and was driving home and it turns out he had a broken headlight. One of the small town cops saw him driving with a burnt headlight and pulled him over. When the cop came to his window, he had a piece in clear view and also a small amount of pot in view. He ended up getting booked for a DUI (Even though he hadn't smoked any of it in a while) and for possession. He was on probation for a year all for something stupid and it all came back to him leaving because he was pissed that I beat him at Risk.

tl;dr my friend got arrested for pot because I beat him at Risk.

As far as board games go, there are a lot of better ones. RISK is very roll heavy and based on luck, not so much on actual skill. It also suffers from several of the classic plagues that can strike a board game, such as player elimination and possibility of endless games (although this is supposedly fixed in the latest edition).

[–]Omnifluence 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

My friends and I were into Risk for a while a few years back. I don't think that we ever completed one game. We'd try to leave the game the way it was so we could continue it later on, but the pieces would always end up getting knocked out of place somehow, or we'd end up needing to use the table for something else and have to put the game away.

Also, I've noticed that Risk is a game that sounds fun when you hear the idea of it, but actually playing it seems more like work than fun. It's kind of like WOW in that sense.

A Risk anectdote:

After high school graduation, I went to Mexico with my boys and we had picked up a shitload of tequila on the cheap. After we got back we decided to play 'drinking Risk' where you had to drink every time you took over two countries in one turn. My friends and I are really competitive and the four of us ended up drinking a 40oz and 1/2 of some good 100% agave shit between us. My sister apparently had to break up a fight where I drunkenly punched one of my best friends in the face over secretly creating an alliance to take me out in South America and Africa. I woke up with a black eye in all my clothes on my bed the next day and my friends were gone. I went to the room where we were playing and the game was untouched, nothing had been hampered with. I called up my friends and they came over the next day to finish the game sober. No hard feelings even though none of us remembered the night before and we all had black eyes/fat lips. Good times.

TL;DR: Friends and I got in a huge drunken fight over risk, still friends.

I highly recommend checking out Risk: Godstorms or Risk: 2210. Both are great games that add a lot of strategy to the original risk game.

[–]BlackHand 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I have 2210. I think that game would be more fun if it wasn't so dependent on who goes first in the turn order.

[–]IronPigeon 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

First time we play 2210 I won because:

"wait.... I can take over the moon with this guy, right?" "...yeah"

Cue: Moon base for the win

[–]abillin6 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That's why you bid energy to see the turn order.

Everyone puts left hand under the table, then above, then open hands. All energy bid is used. Dice roll decides ties.

[–]BlackHand 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Why spend energy on that when you could get nuclear cards?

[–]GeneralRimjoy 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That reminds me of a time when someone I was playing with played the entire nuclear deck in one turn. Just wanted to watch the world burn. And oceans. And the moon.

I can't upvote this enough. I have the remastered Risk, Risk Godstorm, Risk 2210, and Risk LotR. Godstorm is extremely fun to play, as well as 2210, but 2210 is a little more extreme and relies less on strategy and more on cards. Perhaps the best part about Godstorm is that it is fun for everyone, because if you are losing on the normal map, then you are wreaking havoc in the underworld.

I had a fist fight with one of my best friends over a game of Risk. He tried to make an illegal move, then got mad when we explained that it was illegal. He flipped over the game board. I responded by reaching across the table (I was poised to win the game so this pissed me off) and grabbing his shirt, shaking him. We went outside and fought for a bit, then basically called a truce and swore never to play Risk again.

[–]Seeders 1 point2 points ago

We tried to have permanent allies one game. 2v2v2. One turn, somebody eliminated their own ally to take all their cards so they could get a massive army going.

The argument of whether or not that should be allowed tore our group of friends in half, and there is definitely lasting resentment.

If you want to lose any remaining ones try the Campaign for North Africa. In that it lasts for 60000 minutes, so I'm sure at least one friend will literally die before it is over. Map.

My strategy was always to take as much north and south america to start with as possible and slowly take them over so I only had 3 choke points. Then Africa and Europe + Middle east so I could have 3 choke points and 4 continents.

Screw Australia, once you get that, sure its easy to hold, but taking your next continent was more difficult.

Although, the friend losing really came in the end when all the careful planning goes to shit and it only relies on who can get a match.

Personally, I hate Risk. The game is not very tactically deep, the random factor is always way more important than your own skill. The winner of the game is also usually decided within the first 5 turns(often less), but the game can still take hours and hours to complete.

Personally, I think Diplomacy = better Risk.

It doesn't matter where you start or where you hunker down. It depends on who you are playing and how they play. I have won the game by hunkering down in the middle east. But my friends and I don't play anymore because the only way they can beat me is by everyone ganging up on me at the start of the game.

North America is by far the best country to own. In the classic / vintage version there's only 3 entry-points, and you get a continent bonus of 5. It's a clearcut advantage for a 5-point continent as it has the least number of territories per entry-point.

My uni buddies and I would play drinking Risk. Essentially, you lose an army, you take a drink. If you take over a continent, at the beginning of your next turn you get to hand out as many drinks as the continent is worth in armies. Your recent enemies usually received these. We made cards only give small static troop amounts.

Anyway, we probably played this more than 10 times and never once finished a game. The board and half the pieces usually ended up on the floor.

[–]thedibster 0 points1 point ago

You've got to be kidding me. Diplomacy is much more of a friend-killer; you will never forget that stab that ruined the Juggernaut and cost you both the game. Or the same thing happening the game after.

I was playing the 2210 AD version of Risk with a large group of friends one time, and one guy used a card that allowed him to move all of his forces from one territory to a territory on the moon. He tried to take his space station along with his other pieces, and we all ended up arguing about it for an hour. We eventually called up the guy that lent us the game, and forced him to make a decision on the subject.

Myself and 2 other friends have gone in on buying Risk Legacy.

Its a version of Risk where all those "FUCK YOU!" moments stay with the board forever. Each game you make permanent alterations to the board and deck.

In other words. Australia will be useless after the first game.

Just don't play the original "global domination" version. Hasbro actually did some really awesome remakes... this isn't like those stupid "monopoly" rebrandings that don't do anything but change the names of the properties. The new Risk versions are actually really friggin' good.

Get Risk 2210, Risk "strategic conquest" (the one with the arrows on the box) or Risk Godstorm. They're shorter, friendlier games that will be familiar to risk fans but are actually fun. They have fixed time-limits so you don't play to elimination, and they don't have the ever-growing card-cash-in system so the game feels less chaotic and more graspable. Strategic Conquest is objective-oriented where victory goes to the player who does specific things, while Godstorm and 2210 are about raw turf-wars but use cards and special powers to encourage unorthodox ways to grab land. Halo risk follows the Strategic Conquest model.

2210 is the best.

Since everything in that game comes down to dice rolls, you may as well just flip a coin to see who wins.
