Looks to me like the duck is trying to moisten the bread in order to process the food easier but the fish are stealing it.

I doubt the fish are stealing it... they merely want to steal it.

It's fattening them up to eat them later.

If there is one thing the history of evolution has taught us it's that life will not be contained. Life breaks free, expands to new territories, and crashes through barriers, painfully, maybe even dangerously, but, well, there it is.

Is that a quote from Jurassic Park? Maybe Malcolm? Awesome.

Every time I read a quote from him I hear it in his voice. Weird pauses and, somehow, hand motions included.

Same here—ah-ha—but I, I, also include the—uh—stuttered little—heh—giggles which are usually edited out of the, the quotes—as well.

I think this can be explained in terms of the duck's evolved behaviour towards their offspring. Rather than have a brain capable of recognizing their young and feeding them etc. they follow a simple rule which is something like "see gaping mouth -> put food into it". This is the behaviour cuckoos take advantage of for example, the bird raising the cuckoo's parasitic baby doesn't discriminate between species really, it just sees a mouth shape an dumps food into it, to the detriment of it's own offspring.

An insightful comment. I was wondering what evolutionary process would account for such a behavior, and this is just as likely as anything I could imagine. You go, Larry.

Also why humans adopt small puffy things with big eyes.

All I could think of the whole time was: "and one for you, and one for you, oh and one for you too, and one for you..."

I was waiting in dread for one of the fish to attempt to consume the duckling. Was pleasantly relieved.
