Hey everyone, if you want to see the video of this from TLC, here's a clip with better explanation of what happened: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F8uYE6TJ5X8

(Edit: moral of the story: the homeless man keeps his leg, and the doctor DOES credit the maggot infestation with helping save the man's leg and life.)

While i would very much like it to be, I don't think the man in the video is the man above. Pants, shoes, hair, and the wound are all different. There's a large cavity in what's left of the man's leg in the image!

It's clearly a re-enactment, I believe for the television show Untold Stories of the ER.

A re-enactment? But the way the doctors interact with one another seems so natural.

Hey pal, what's eating you?

[–]tvraisedme 4 points5 points ago

This is supposed to be fairly common for hobo alcoholics. The way I understand it is: they get frostbite, which gets infected, then the flesh dies, then the maggots move in.

[–]LazerChicklets 10 points11 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That's actually normal. The maggots are supposed to eat the dead flesh.

[–]FrenchFriedMushroom 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Bullshit. I know that maggots are sometimes used to eat dead flesh, but that is not the case with this picture.

[–]pseud0nym 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

actually.. in this case that is exactly what they did. This has been posted a number of times before. The wound was far less infected than it would otherwise normally be.

Im fairly certain that any doctor that would use maggots to clean a wound would make sure that the clothes he was wearing were not soaked in puss and blood.

Yeah, this pic is not of maggots being used by doctors to remove dead skin.

[–]pseud0nym 13 points14 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

no, that isn't what I was saying. This wasn't medical, it just happened. However, the maggots DID clean the wound and keep sepsis from the wound. If it wasn't for the maggots, the guy would have died or lost the leg.

I read a story on reddit about a home health aid that was taking care of an elderly man with a very swollen growth on his face. It got to the point where he could no longer see out of his eyes, but he was so old and frail that doctors would not operate. One day he was in the bathroom and the whole growth fell off into the sink. It had become infested with maggots. What ended up in the sink was a writhing mass of disgusting rotten flesh, but what was left on the man's face was new, pink skin. The maggots had saved his eyesight.

I'm paraphrasing here but I thought that was a cool story.

You think that guy actually kept his leg from the knee down?

[–]pseud0nym 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

apparently.. At least that is what I recall.. this image has been around forever.. since the original rotten.com, so it has been a while since the details were related to me. But as I recall, the dude was fine because of the maggots. They kept the wound clean and all the hospital did was clean it off and bandage it.

The man pictured lived, kept his whole leg, turned his life around, and now runs a successful maggot shop in the lower east side.

Maggots are actually a good sign. Without maggots, that would have been gangrenous and probably gone septic.

[–]toolboy69 0 points1 point ago

[–]anotherDocObVious 5 points6 points ago

I read somewhere that this was very common with "bums" - gangrene. Actually, the maggots are doing him a favor - removing the gangrenous decayed skin. Problem is there's very little remaining - most likely he'll have his legs amputated below the knee/shin.

Sad, but that's the brutal face of poverty. :(

In WW2 some of the soldiers used maggots to clean/disinfect their wounds when medical attention was not available.

The way the guy's head is tilted and his hand resting seems to indicate it isn't.
