Y'know I really did like the show for like 2 seasons. Just seems like it's more of the same over and over. Ridiculous geek pandering, but the base of many of the jokes really aren't that funny. Still think Community and It's Always Sunny are 3x better. For me, Big Bang is the dorky equivalent to fart jokes.

here's a couple of points:

  • Laugh track, a funny show does not make. They abuse it way too much. You cant even hear them talk over it, it's so intrusive.

  • None of the characters are relatable, likable, or in any way "understandable".

  • It takes stereotypes and rail roads them into the ground. Many of the people I have talked to who like the show, like it because "IT people are exactly like that". It vilifies "IT nerds" and compliments anyone who finds dealing with IT nerds a chore and/or frustrating.

  • It perpetuates the idea that people-who-understand-computers are somehow borderline retarded (and not just socially) and everyone else are "normal". With the possible exception of "management".

  • The "acting" is so wooden, I'm convinced they've outsourced their on-air talent to jim henson's creature workshop.

  • None of the jokes are funny, it is not entertaining. in the slightest.

If they took the exact same plot but replaced the thematic substance of "Nerds" with gay people, everyone would be up in arms about its horrible misrepresentation. But since it's about "nerds", its a-ok.

I will give big bang theory its dues and say that to some degree it actually puts out a positive message, although in a terribly unentertaining manner.

It being a live audience does not guarantee that the sound you hear is the sound the audience made when the actors played the scene, in fact there is very little chance it is.

In any case, they mix the volume of the laugh track so loud that it becomes intrusive and its edited to a near constant stream of laughter. It does not add to the show, it takes away from what is already a pretty lacking show.

Graham Linehan talks about the studio laughter in the season 1 director's commentary. All of his shows (Father Ted, Black Books, Big Train) have used live studio audiences. I suppose it's just personal taste. If you don't like his surreal sense of humour, then there's no point in trying to argue about it.

I always felt IT Crowd was more of a show like Seinfeld. Simple to understand characters in bizarre or outlandish situations. It does paint a pretty inaccurate depiction of denizens of the nerd sub culture, but then again Sex and The City makes New York women look like neurotic, self-important, sexually absorbed hedonists.

I guess what I'm saying is, television needs simple, easy to digest characters so the unimaginative viewers can keep up. It's the price we pay for (almost) free entertainment.

EDIT: Seinfeld reference in response was in a complete vacuum regarding other redditor's Seinfeld responses. This hive mind thing is getting creepy...

100% agree. However I do think there is an element of viewers who actually think something is funny based on the laugh track, without even realizing it.

A good example of well-done canned laughter was MASH. It was quite obviously canned, but they didn't over do it, sometimes it added to the scenes. Particularly after the darker moments in that show, when you, as a viewer, may not have necessarily picked up on the humor.

Yup. But then again, I would also say Sex & The City was a pretty awful show. Although, somehow mildly more watchable. Probably because there was no laugh track.

I guess what I'm saying is, television needs simple, easy to digest characters so the unimaginative viewers can keep up. It's the price we pay for (almost) free entertainment.

The "entertainment" is by no means free. To some extent, shows are subsidised by advertising, but regardless of that fact, you are paying for the showing one way or another.

But I do agree on the simplification. Still, there are quality shows being produced that dont follow such a poor formula.
