"I'm just tired of these communist niggers ruining everything about America. These Occupy Wallstreet faggots don't even know what they're talking about. They're all commies." - Actual words from my dad.

My ignorant relatives aren't even that well informed. They just sit around all day parroting each other like the Texas white trash rednecks they are and they know they hate Obama and liberals and smart people and things like that, but since they're so intellectually incestuous they never get around to arguing WHY they hate those things.

"OH OBAMA THAT BABOON, HE SHOULD BE STRUNG UP"

"What did he do to you?"

"OH YOU KNOW THOSE COMMIE SOCIALISTS, THEY, UH..."

"They what? Tried to give us affordable healthcare? Continued your dear Bush's stimulus idea to save the economy from even worse ruin? Improved rights for credit card customers? Helped students to manage crushing student credit? Ended DADT? Killed Bin Laden and supported Khaddafi's demise? Are you upset that he does not clearly communicate with the electorate? He didn't pass the DREAM act? Guantanamo Bay is still open? Concerned that he seems more comfortable with accommodating conservatives than just doing the right thing? Are you upset that illegal immigration has fallen dramatically since he took office? What exactly are you mad at him about?"

"OH, YOU THINK YOU'RE SO SMART."

Well the dramatic drop in illegal immigration is more likely to reduced pull factors. In other words its now more economic to stay in there birth nations then go to the US.

I love them cause they are family but I hope when I get older I don't become as bitter, narrow minded and myopic as my relatives have become.

It's kind of sad to see how people change, I was going thru some boxes a few months ago and found some of my dad's stuff from college and discovered he ran for vice president at stanford. He had fliers and this whole platform about opposing vietnam, more rights for student protests, more student input on professors, more aid to underprivileged families, an emphasis on creating a more diverse student body. After he graduated he worked in D.C. for the EPA helping to set up better water quality regulations and standards. After getting an MBA from Wharton he passed up much more lucrative opportunities to work as an administrator and teach at Tuskegee Institute in Alabama.

I wonder what happened, if there was ever one thing that set him off or if it was a slow decline. These days he's become such a closed minded, angry, bitter and racist person that he'll find a way to inject his vitriol into any situation. A newspaper, a commercial on tv, something in a movie will bring out the right wing talk radio with added slurs even they have the common sense not to say.

This was me literally 1.5 hours ago as my in-laws were agreeing with each other that 'suspending certain parts of the constitution would make us safer'- I tried the old "Those who give up freedom for safety deserve neither" by Ben Franklin on them, and got the retort "Well we didn't have terrorists back then" from my brother in law. I went back to my pie.

Not to the Founding Fathers which is the point of the re-tort.

Think about how the early Americans viewed and treated Native Americans because of perceived "threat" that they posed to settlers and then compare that to how our government treats American citizens today based on a perceived "threat" of terrorism.

so much for progress, huh? the things that applied hundreds of years ago, simply, are not the same as the times we are living in. Why are 'people' so against progression? If doctors still believed in 'blood-letting' they would be revered as fools.... why are politics so blind? it's unfortunate really, not for 'us'... but for "them"

This is me at every family dinner. Last time we had dinner my mother complained about "welfare bums", talked over me when I criticized Stephen Harper, said I'm entitled after I expressed worries about not being able to find a job that will pay the bills when I graduate. I called her out over the fact she hasn't worked a real job in over 25 years and yet my father has to pay for her $20,000/yearly makeup, wardrobe and beauty expenses.

Needless to say that didn't go over very well.

I believe it provides the framework for a society that is both fair and free.

[–]Conman93 4 points5 points ago

How is it free? These are legitimate questions btw, I know you came to this conclusion through some sort of logic, I'm just trying to see it.

Also, how do you explain how much of a failure communism has been? What countries that are communist prove to be an example of how communism could work?

I always get a kick out of how careful we are on reddit when questioning someones political views unless they are considered conservative in any way. Don't get me wrong, it's great to be polite and open minded. Just pointing out the status quo.

[–]petsounds94 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

No, I believe that you're curious. :) I always was, too (I used to be really conservative).

First of all, it's important to know what communism is. Technically, communism is anarchy- there is no state at all. It is fairly idealistic, and I realize probably not possible, but still something that we should strive for. But I digress.

Communism does not require any regulation of social freedoms, such as freedom of speech. These are very important and should never be infringed upon. The big difference with communism is in the economics. According to the Communist Manifesto (by Karl Marx) there is a period of socialism before communism. This is where the government has total control over the economy. This is fair, as opposed to capitalism, because it truly gives people the ability to do what they want. It all comes back to whether or not one considers money "speech." I don't think that people who are born poor have the same opportunities as someone who is born rich. The same is the case for those who are born stupid. There really isn't much that can be done to change their intelligence. As a result, they fail. Communism (and socialism) remove this be equally distributing the wealth among all members of society. Everyone has enough to survive and flourish. The difference is that poor people aren't starving and the wealthy don't have mounds of cash just laying around.

As for past communist nations, as I've already described, they weren't truly communist. True communism has never existed. The states you're thinking of, likely the USSR and Cuba, among others, are socialism gone awry. They claim to be socialist, and in many ways they are, but they restrict social freedoms (such as speech) that are unrelated to socialism. I despise Stalin and Mao as much as the next man. They were evil people. As I mentioned earlier, I think that communism is probably unattainable. That being said, we should progress as close to it was we can. This means increasing government control over the market and decreasing its control over social freedoms. This allows us to maximize everyone's welfare. I hope this helped answer some questions for you. :) Just out of curiosity, how would you describe your political orientation?

[–]toodlefoot 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You're 100% right to wish for a communist utopia as it was meant to exist, but it can't exist with humans. A couple points you should consider.

  • This socialist period before communism in which everything is shoveled into the government and redistributed among the people is a serious problem. You're heaping all of the cheese into a giant pile and putting up a sign that says "Rats, please don't eat this."

  • Communism does not "truly give people the ability to do what they want". You've got jobs that need done. You can't have a whole country full of video game testers. So when you have nobody that wants to take buckets of shit out of sewer clogs, who does that job? How do you determine who you order to do it and who enforces it? That would be the government. And in order to be truly fair it would have to be chosen at random. Or maybe you can do IQ tests and the poor dumb fuck with low scores gets stuck shoveling shit in a sewer for the rest of his life.. Now you've got a well adjusted intellectual upper eschelon, normal people with normal jobs in the middle and basically a mentally ill slave class.

[–]carlender 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I am not the guy who asked you the question; but it seems to me that you are trying to define communism in purely economic terms, while keeping the more mainstream social aspects (such as free speech etc.) separate.

A serious question: Have you considered taking an economics course that might help you strengthen (or challenge) your viewpoint?

[–]petsounds94 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'm only in high school at the moment, so I haven't had the opportunity yet. I definitely plan on taking courses in both economics and politics in high school, though! I just started reading the Communist Manifesto, also.

[–]carlender 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

ah well, in that case enjoy your feelings about communism. They will go away with the first microeconomics course you take in college.

[–]Conman93 4 points5 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

This is very well written, and actually got me thinking. Here is my opinion.

Everyone has enough to survive and flourish. The difference is that poor people aren't starving and the wealthy don't have mounds of cash just laying around.

Survive? Yes. Flourish? No. Remember, flourish means "to grow," you can't grow if every time you get a bit extra you must give it to the government, right?

Also, have you taken into consideration that humans are not perfect? I could see communism working perfectly if we were wise, selfless beings, but we're not. It's taught in basic economics that humans need incentive if they are to be thriving members of society. If I lived a well run communist country, what would be my incentive to get up in the morning and go to work if the government will just take money from someone else and give it to me?

What about jobs? Do I get paid the same if I'm a grocery bagger or a doctor who has spent years in college? Why would anyone want to do the hard jobs, the ones nobody wants to do, if we all go home with the same amount of income?

EDIT:I'm going to watch porn now...

Oh, I forgot to mention countries I think we should emulate. Denmark and the Netherlands quickly come to mind. They're both virtually socialist (they have a much more equal distribution of wealth).

When anyone brings up politics so that they can rail on this politician or that form of government or this new law I generally just say "It's nice that you feel this way but I really don't care". If they get nasty I just calmly get up and walk away.

Now if someone wants to have a mature discussion which happens to dwell on the topic of politics I'm perfectly ok with that.

The usual shit in my home, that im sure most british (and indeed american) redditors can sympathise with, follows thusly:

'we should send them all back to where they came from'.

I have, in my short 23 years, countered this little nugget of exquisite prejudice more times than i care to admit, not just from my own family, but i just cannot be arsed any more. If youre stupid enough to say that shit in the first place, youre too stupid to teach different.
