True story: My dad would go to this little coffee shop in town five six times a day, then a few months after he died the shop went out of business. ಠ_ಠ

Yeah, paying $5 doesn't buy them the right to act like an asshole though.

Yeah, that's an extra 65 cents

That's 65 of my hard-earned cents for the cup with the green logo instead of black.

9 customers out of 10 are excellent. They're polite, kind and a pleasure to serve. That last asshole though, the one with the entitlement, belittles the shit out of you. They're the worst. They make you feel like shit for something completely out of your control (say you're out of a certain thing...I'm a lowly barista. I don't place the orders.) You can only be told you're stupid so many times before you've had enough.

It only takes 1 turd to ruin the punch bowl.

[–]Waffles81 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Thats news to me! I always believed it would require at least 2 turds!

[–]mordacthedenier 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Depends on the size of the turd.

Every barista I've been friends with has said something similar to "You can only be told you stupid so many times before you snap." I would say this is an accurate portrayal.

I didn't make up the name. And I wasn't complaining? I was just saying certain people are just assholes.

yeah, if you don't like being treated like shit, just get one of those totally easy to get non-retail, non-corporate jobs! and next time you're at the starbucks shareholders meeting, tell them that the title "barista", which you yourself personally chose, makes people feel angry and alienated.

[–]Megadeth619[S,!] 1 point2 points ago

You are the type of person we are talking about.

[–]Emilleigh 1 point2 points ago

"barista" is the OP's job title. Just like "sales associate" or "cashier" or "customer service rep"... Holy shit.

If we're talking about Starbucks, I always assumed that the sense of superiority was calculated into the price of the drink.

[–]Emilleigh -1 points0 points ago

Starbucks does quite a bit of charity work. They pay fair trade prices for most (all?) of their coffee beans, give a lot of money back to the farming communities and also to communities here in the US. They sent a large number of their store managers to New Orleans to do some manual labor some years after Katrina.

you sir, are the reason why i feel judged every time i go into that certain coffee company... there's one by my house and is simply more convenient, so they know "my usual", but i always feel like a megadouche.

No need to feel bad if you are polite. If you are nice and considerate, we love you. It's the rude ones we don't.

I was filling up the R&D on Friday and I just thought to myself "Fuck this shit." So I went to the back, found my supervisor and said "Hey, I stocked up the R&D but I'm going to quit now so have a good one." Then I walked out the door. It was fucking sweeeeet.

It's true though. "Well (other barista) doesn't charge me for the added syrup." "OK, while I understand that, my boss is right behind me and I'm charging you. Don't like it? Take it up with him, it's his rule, not mine." Customer gets mad at me because I refused to jeopardize my job, but still pays full price, with the added syrup shot. I sooo would have given them the free syrup to make them happy, I had no problem with that, but don't get mad at us because the boss makes a rule and we follow it. Take it up with the boss!

well they do have some entitlement..since the reason for you working there is them giving you money for what you do for them.

i am a waiter. i hate when people say something like that about customers..if you do not want to make people happy for what they pay your, find another job..or raise the prices/get a better salary.

Yea, this is bullshit. I also work at Starbucks and its a fucking nightmare. I realize they're paying money for a product I'm serving them, but I've been working as a barista (I've only been at Sbucks for about 2 months - have worked at other independent places for over 5 years,) and literally NOWHERE else has customers as bad as that place does.

Drink nazis? Fine. Coffee snobs? Totally fine - I can be one myself. But someone flipping their shit because I put eight instead of NINE SPLENDAS in your Venti fuckaccino on TOP of the "sugar free caramel syrup" and half and half instead of milk no foam extra hot, extra whip, but with soy milk is fucking bullshit. That place is a disaster. Never have I had less faith in the human race than I do now, after working at a Starbucks for two months.

There is a massive difference between demanding a product you're paying for and being an unreasonable, spoiled consumer in an environment where the consumer is given unlimited control so the producer can make more money.

Oh, and yea. Make sure you go through the drive through to get your venti java chip frappucino every day, you disgusting, lazy, people.

/working at starbucks rant.

Edit: Also, if "just get another job" was an actual option (from the college grad two degree holder, internship finisher like myself,) we wouldn't be baristas and waiters. just fyi. cuz i don't looooove making coffee. not enough to get a measly $350 paycheck every two weeks.

[–]oncassette 8 points9 points ago

upvote for coining the term "venti fuckaccino"

[–]holst09 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That really blows man. You know what you should do? Keep a small eye dropper or something with laxative in it, and if people decide to fuck with you, just put a few drops, not enough to explode their bowels, but the combination of coffee with a small amount of laxative is bound to strike a tone with them.

Hey, after all, isn't that what psychological conditioning is about anyways?

[–]NotSoSrsBsns 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

So the answer is to poison the people you don't like? EDIT - when they record you on camera?

[–]pomdecouer 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Ha! I've heard of people doing such things - I used to work with a guy who would secretly lick the inside of people's cups.

My go to strategy is givin em decaf. If the coffee doesn't work at this place, why come back?

Though, its not caffeine they're addicted to, its sugar. So who knows.

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

So if the other places you worked were so much better, why did you leave?

[–]pomdecouer 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Mostly because of moving. I've lived a couple different places over the past few years. And to be fair, I worked at one coffee shop for 3 of those years, and another coffee shop for the other 3. Its not like I was abandoning ship all over the place. The difference could also be that the two independent shops were in a big city, while the starbucks i work at now is in the suburbs.

Huge clientele difference.

I worked as a waiter before Derpbucks, and believe me, Derpbucks is a whole different monster. I have heard from other baristas who worked different jobs that it's particularly bad there. Those people you see on TV who are Nazis about their drinks? Guess what, these people actually exist. I just find it fairly ridiculous how big of a deal some people make out of coffee. I've seen grown adults throw tantrums over this stuff. It's quite disgusting.

[–]Emilleigh 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The customer is paying for a well-made drink and great customer service, not a whipping boy. I've been the target of many customers' misplaced anger, and it sucks. Yeah, they're paying a lot for the drink, but I make a fantastic drink and that extra money does not go to me, nor is it a go-ahead to verbally abuse me.

Man, I used to work at a coffee place, and I got these people all of the time. We were required to try and remember the names of people, and this one guy always came in at night. Whenever one of the morning shift people came in at night, he expected them to automatically know his name (even if they'd never met), and he would get mad when they didn't know his name or his favorite drink. He would leave our surveys on the counter telling us this and also complaining that we didn't have cheesecake or something like that.

I can never look at this meme without that smooth yet cutting voice of Gene Wilder reading the text aloud in my mind. Never any enthusiasm, just a soft, casual tone with just the right amount of sardonic wit.

Starbucks just attracts assholes. The college kids who whine about having no money, but don't make their own coffee. That kind of asshole. Sorry you gotta work there dude. I cringe when I see go into those places.

Lol I've always refused to order anything 'venti' though. I don't know if that makes me entitled, but I would rather say 'large' or something. Just saying the words 'venti iced caramel macchiato' makes me feel like a tool. They're delicious, but I'll instead have a 'large coffee' haha

I must say, I was sitting in my usual coffee shop the other day and wasn't quite ready for my coffee yet, but I was sitting on my laptop. The barista comes over and hassles me to buy coffee... because I was on the wifi... I just thought it was lame, since I always buy coffee when I'm there and I'm there 4-5 times a week. Is this douchebag entitlement behavior?

[–]bagher1 -1 points0 points ago

Do you own the place? Maybe you should shut up and give the people who pay your salary their coffee. Caffeine is a drug and we're addicted.

And what the fuck type of person is that? You don't know me buddy; I don't patronize the people who serve me coffee. I get ticked off at smug kids and slow passive aggressive coffee servers who think the world owes them something. You're paid to serve coffee. Don't like it get a new fucking job.
