I think this might be the most reposted quote on r/atheism

So what you're saying is that there's Pryor art...

So ... don't up-vote it.

When enough people stop enjoying it on the front page, it will no longer be on the front page.

That, or the one about reading the bible on a train and saying, "Oh bullshit"

Cool post man, looking forward to the one about calling your weed the Qur'an which I'm sure you'll show us later this week.

I see people saying this is a re-post. But I have never seen this before. Quit all the hating.

we should create r/atheism_reposts.

reposts are really ruining this subreddit for me

People who cry "repost!" are the worst people on forums because they assume that since they've seen something, everyone else in the universe has seen it.

At this point, the mods should consider putting in the sidebar, "Yes, we know what Richard Pryor thinks about vampires."

I suppose there does have to be a balance between newcomers and those who have been here a while. I may just be "graduating", in a sense.

Someone else pointed out that there was a definite r/atheism type. Most people coming here are relatively young, and new atheists, and most of the material posted is more of an intro to atheism. A commiseration- yes, we may have been misled, but here's where to go from here.

It's not a bad direction for the subreddit to take. Just not one that really interests me much. I think I'll quietly unsubscribe and wish you and the subreddit the best.

I'll ignore the "I'm more mature than you" connotations, and simply point out that the third paragraph is what you need to do if this bothers you so. Not due to any specific content on this forum, but for your epiphany of "Hey, wait, I don't get sole power to determine what's displayed on a community site where people get to vote, maybe this site isn't for me."

I'm sure there's a another site out there more helpful in your quest to feel smug.

Sorry, I really didn't intend to come off as condescending. But I think it is worth noting that about 75% of the comments on this submission are about it being a repost.

[–]VaporTrail2112 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That was pretty condescending.

But why do the 10 or so commentators in the thread get to decide what the 300+ people who upvoted the picture get to see?

Reddit is democracy at its most lawless. You can either accept that and stay or reject it and leave, but at no point do 10 people get to decide what 300 people get to do.

This was actually a consideration taken into account when the new version of Digg was announced. One of the new differences was that power users had a greater say in what was shown. Their intent was to get a front page that was more varied, and was consistently new and refreshing. Kinda like Valve's AI director in L4D.

[–]emdeemcd[S] -2 points-1 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

People come to Reddit for 1) mind-numbingly encapsulated humor 2) pictures of cats 3) drama. That's it.

Are there a few enclaves of intelligent thought? Sure. But Reddit is mostly common-denominator.

That's why I don't come here for intelligent conversation. I come here for easily digestible stupid shit. I get the sense that you want Reddit to have a higher standard of complexity - you're not going to get that when people vote on what's presented at the top of the main page because people will see a cat and click the up arrow.

Maybe Digg will give you what you want, but along with having "power users" (which sounds like "people who get to pick content") you'll have a smaller audience overall since most people just want HUR DUR CATS and won't stay there.

My advice to repost advocates is to go out and explore more subreddits! This worked for me.

The problem is that this picture in particular is in the FAQ.

[–]SaucyKing 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It even says in the r/atheism FAQ to avoid posting this picture (among others).

[–]NyQuil012 1 point2 points ago

People who can't take 30 seconds to check and see if the picture they just copied from their friends Facebook page to imgur has already been posted are the worst people on forums because they clog them up with shit we've already seen. Especially since your friend probably saw it here and then posted it to Facebook.

we don't need to crate a new subreddit, renaming r/atheism would be more efficient and accurate

Just because it isn't put into an eloquent sentence doesn't mean the idea behind the words isn't philosophical or deep

Since vampires are bullshit, and garlic is awesome, this quote is illogical.

Bill Burr is pretty good on his podcast about religion. A bit more agnostic than atheist but gets a few great digs in about the kind of people who promote it and the fundamental bullshit of it.

I didn't know Pryor was an atheist. Awesome!

[–]centigrade100 2 points3 points ago

I met his daughter, Rain. She admitted to the entire crowd (of about ~30/40 people) that she was an atheist black Jew, and said something like "I know some of you are put off by that". She waited till the end to say this, probably to avoid putting them off immediately. I got a chance to talk with her briefly at the end, and she was pretty down to earth, and very friendly.

So yes, he probably was. He married a white Jewish lady in the 60s. Pretty dang progressive for that era.

Just so you guys know, Pryor used to be an extremely clean comic. Once he realized though that he couldn't beat Cosby in that circuit he moved over to the dirty comic area with the help of Redd Fox. You could say (this part is a joke, people) that if it wasn't for chocolate pudding, and pokeman that we wouldn't have Pryor's great body of work.

nothing against actual unreasonableness, not even an argument against a straw man, just plain old bashing religion for its own sake?

enjoy the circlejerking, folks
