Beware of trading scammers!

A subreddit for anything related to games (but not sports).

"Related" means that posts must contain gaming-related content in the link/post body, not just a "forced" connection via the title or a caption added to the content.

Posting Rules

  • Posts must be directly gaming-related. Thus, "generic" image macros/memes (where the character itself is not related to gaming) like Scumbag Steve, Good Guy Greg, etc. will be removed. Something that "reminds you of a game", or "looks like something from a game" is also not an appropriate submission; similarly, reaction GIFs are also not appropriate as submissions.

  • Following Reddiquette is encouraged

  • No "general" URL shorteners (bitly, tinyurl, etc). Single-site URL shorteners (such as youtu.be or fav.me) are allowed.

  • No game or product giveaway of any kind

  • NSFW submissions and comments must be labeled

  • Spoilers can be posted using the following formatting:
    [X Kills Y](/spoiler)
    Result: X Kills Y.

  • To mark a spoiler as relevant to a specific game/topic, use the alternate formatting:
    [Player 1 wins](/spoiler "Pong")
    Result:
    Player 1 wins

  • Report posts containing spoilers not using the above method

  • Don't post users' personal information.

Submission Rules

Is your post not showing up? Do not delete it. Wait 5 minutes to give AutoModerator a chance to look at it; it approves most submissions automatically. If it hasn't shown up after more than 5 minutes, simply message the moderators and ask us to let it through.

Haha so true, isn't 2010 just so crazy? I can't wait to see what 2011 holds!

It holds skyrim

Imo Skyrim is actually pretty challenging when put up to master difficulty. Been playing master ever since I started, so much more satisfying when you clear a dungeon etc. I feel for you guys playing on medium difficulty.

Here here! I moved up from Adept to Expert and even that bump was nice. You don't notice it at first until you start fighting groups of enemies together.

That's when the rape commences.

Bump up to master and get three or four on you in a closed space and you'll be wishing you stayed at expert.

As did I! Problem is though, the only possible combination for my redgaurd is a sword and a restoration spell (fast healing is the one I use), since one hit usually knocks out about half your health

I'm mainly in archery, takes lots of patience and saves to kill anything :p

After growing up playing the Elder Scrolls series, Skyrim kinda bores me in the sense you never have to make any significant choices about anything. You don't even make a character and nothing in the game resists you. You're always a significant hero that's greatly rewarded.

The most challenge you can get is bumping it up to Master and enjoying a game of prolonged fights dotted with randomly instant kills. There's no complexity, and no thought.

[–]highTrolla 0 points1 point ago

I like how the consistent difficulty and randomly generated dungeons make up for the short length and lack of co-op.

[–]maxwellmaxwell 29 points30 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Huh, reposted so many times it's full of .jpg artifacts.

Anyways, play Super Meat Boy or Binding of Isaac if you're looking for a challenge (there is something SERIOUSLY wrong with these game designers, but they're geniuses).

[–]exegesis 11 points12 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Eventually digital movies and pictures will be 'dated' by the graphical artifacts they contain, and historians will use such flaws to carbon date, so-to-speak, different things.

[–]Sansarasa 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Reposting (Or more specifically, reuploading the image) doesn't add more compression artifacts... recompressing adds more compression artifacts.

Someone has to go and open this image to then save it as a new jpg file using an image editing software in order to achieve that.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Many file upload sites perform recompression on images to save space. If imgur does it, then it would explain the artifacts.

I have the opposite experience with most games. I remember finding the earlier Capcom platformers and the like to the pretty difficult, or at least requiring some time commitment to complete. Nowadays I can pretty much breeze through them in a couple of hours.

The difference is mainly between games that were difficult to beat because they required a certain dexterity that's second nature to some of us now, and games that were difficult to beat because they just weren't designed in a way that your skills as a player would increase your chances of winning. I'll use Double Dragon 3 and Megaman 3 as examples here:

DD3 for the NES is one of those games that people universally agree is a hard game to beat. But it isn't hard because it requires the player to be skillful - It's "hard" because the way to win is unintuitive. Most people would go play through a sidescrolling beat em up that gives you tools like standing punches, kicks, and grapples to use those tools in tandem to defeat the hoards of mooks on the screen. In fact, the game design punishes you for doing this. Enemies will randomly recover instantly from hitstun and interrupt your attack string for massive damage. There is no way for the player to predict or counter this. If it happens enough times, the player has to restart the level. Needless to say, a whole lot of people had to replay a whole lot of levels because of this. But despite this, the game wasn't difficult.

The solution was to not use those tools. By walking forward and jump kicking every enemy in the game, you can pretty much get through unscathed in less than half an hour. As soon as you stop playing the game as it was (poorly) designed to be played, and start using your dexterity, awareness of enemy AI, and amazing superhuman spatial awareness skills ("Will the hitbox on my foot hit this mook's head at the end of my jump arc? Yes? More jumpkicks"), the game goes from unbeatably hard to something fun and easy to do while casually waiting for your Steam update to finish.

Megaman 3 was "hard" for a different reason, but still not genuinely difficult. The game boils down to rote memorization. "Remember to move in the opposite direction immediately after jumping over this chasm, because a mook is going to jump up from the pit and insta-kill you." The boss fights are the same way, as there is no variation to their attack patterns. Which, when you haven't memorized the pattern and are made to replay a level until you do, gives you the impression that the game is difficult.

Both of these games were developed in a time when game design theory was focused mainly on getting people to put more quarters into a coin-op. A modern beat-em-up style game like Bayonetta would be a fun arcade addition, but wouldn't do much in the way of making money for arcade operators, since the game gives you defensive options to reasonably keep yourself from dying if you have the dexterity to make good use of them.

The Castlevania games are also good examples, especially the Igarashi titles (SOTN and the like). They're still hard in that it takes time to get to the point where you're able to dodge and counter enemies and make effective use of your items without taking a Medusa Head to the face in the middle of your backdash. But it's insanely rewarding once you do get that good at the game.

tl;dr: If a game was designed to give skillful players an edge, you will find them less frustrating now that you've accrued all those skills over the years. But if it wasn't designed that way, it's going to be just as frustrating (Unless you game the system).

And yes I made this same post last year.

Perhaps the key lies in your ability as a gamer more than how the game is designed. If you had been playing games regularly the whole 16 years you would obviously be very knowledgeable about design tactics and how to "game the system" sometimes.

I generally find most games boring these days. Exceptions being whatever Valve puts out and Deus Ex.

I mean, I usually love a game when I start it, but I quickly lose interest. The only games I've finished this year are Deus Ex: HR, Portal 2, and oddly enough Crysis 2 (which I got bored with 99% of the way through, then came back to 5 minutes of gameplay and the end cutscene. The crap?).

Back in the day it was an achievement to pass a game. It required skill. Now a days it simply requires time. Just play it until you complete it...

Of course some people may like to point out that it is because I am growing up. But I still haven't ever passed Sonic the Hedgehog 2..that shit is fucking impossible. But LA Noire and Red Dead are so goddamn easy.

Am I the only one who doesn't have a problem with this?

I mean I have enough real world problems to deal with that I don't want to get fucking pissed at a game half the time I play it. Sure some things like Call of Duty are way to linear and easy but for the most part the ability to turn down difficulty and play easily with a little bit of challenge at times is more enjoyable that just getting completely pissed off at certain levels.
