How come the big block in the middle never changes size?

[–]Nekture 126 points127 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Basically, zooming in and walking back or zooming out and walking towards the object. The zooming changes the field of view and by repositioning yourself you can keep the block the same size.

Is this the reason why the Moon appears larger than normal in some photos?

[–]narky1 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

When the moon is low it appears larger. Why exactly is still debated.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moon_illusion

[–]stillnotking 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's debated, but it is definitely a perceptual illusion rather than an effect of magnification, as this gif is. So no, the "Hitchcock zoom" is unrelated to the moon illusion.

[–]SoPoOneO 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yes. It's also how they are able to get animals that are actually nowhere near each other to look like they are side-by-side in some nature specials.

[–]OMGTSN 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Forced perspective. They do this a lot in movies. For example, in the film "Elf", the scene where they're reciting the "Elf Code." Will Ferrell looks like he's sitting right next to the other elves, but he's actually raised on a platform. The camera is positioned in a way that it tricks your mind into thinking both Will and the elves are side-by-side.

Another amazing example is in the first LOTR movie when Frodo hops on the wagon next to Gandalf and Frodo looks tiny but it is because he is practically sitting in the back of the wagon but the camera position makes it look like he is next to him.

Sometimes the moon appears larger because I took a photo of the moon separately at 300mm and Photoshopped it in. Like this http://www.flickr.com/photos/singleservingphoto/6412040351/in/set-72157623520641218

But that's what it looked like to me at the time. Optical illusion.

[–]haydaw -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Also, when your far away and zoom in on the moon, a minor affect of it seeming closer does happen, i forgot where i read about this. but its basically how a telephoto lens works, it kinda "flattens" the universe

I think my favorite dolly-zoom/contra-zoom ever, is in the French film La Haine from 1995. It occurs just as they arrive in Paris and they're on a balcony sort of thing. What's interesting about it is that it isn't motivated by some sort of character reaction as it is in Jaws, Vertigo and a lot of other famous examples, but it's simply used as an excellent establishing shot of Paris, adjusting the field of view onto our characters as the city sort of wraps itself around them. Awesome film, btw.

Ninjaedit: Just found a clip of it on YouTube

[–]wescotte[!] 3 points4 points ago

Once the background goes out of focus it almost looks like bad rear projection.

[–]Agenal 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Haha, it does look pretty funky. I'm really curious as to what glass was used on this shot. I know they shot most of it on S16 except from some over-cranked/VFX stuff, but yeah, that background stuff gets really intense. I notice it does go a little bit soft towards the end, but I can't really blame them. It's quite well executed really.

[–]Nixpix66 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'm not sure if he was the first, but he Definitely made it famous. He used it a lot in vertigo.

It's done by zooming out while moving in with a dolly (or vice versa). Thus the name Zolly.

Does anyone know if this is the same focus / zoom technique used in Super 8? I was watching last night and noticed some interesting focus adjustments and zooms around the train crash scene. Specifically I think there is one when Joe notices the white truck.

[–]Agenal 10 points11 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

No, the sharp focus pull when Joe notices the truck on the train tracks looks the way it does because Super 8 was shot on anamorphic lenses.

Basically, if you don't know what they are, they're lenses that squeeze a widescreen image onto a piece of film or digital sensor. This way you get the 2.35:1 cinemascope aspect ratio without having to crop away anything, it allows you to make the best use of film/sensor. The anamorphic format has a lot of particular aesthetics that makes it interesting, such as the very iconic blue anamorphic lens flares, and the distortion in the edges of the frame. Another such side-effect would be what's called breathing when adjusting focus. It simply causes a distortion in the image as the focus plane is adjusted, due to the nature of the anamorphic format and the way these optics are constructed. This is why it could be perceived as a zoom, while it is in fact not!

tl;dr Super 8 had some excellent anamorphic cinematography.
