Powerlifting is bench press, deadlift and squat. Winner has the highest total of all three.

Powerlifters do low-bar back squats as well, where the bar rests on your shoulder blades, compared to olympic squats where the bar rests on your traps.

Huh, I always thought it was just a matter of personal preference. Figured powerlifters just held the bar lower because squatting suits allowed them to and it could add on a few extra lbs.

I still prefer to rest the bar in the middle of the traps.

Low-bar activates the glutes and hamstrings more because your torso is bent forward a little more. Since its more evenly balanced you tend to lift more weight (once you get the form down of course). You need a little flexibity in the chest, shoulders, and rotator cuffs to get the bar seated properly, too. I love that style now though, the bar is so much more comfortable because it doesn't sit on the meat of your muscle!

Well since you seem to know the dynamics of it, I prefer to go lower in my motion...that explosive uplift is what keeps me going...is there any benefit to keeping the bar higher or lower for that purpose?

Powerlifters definitely do a little "bounce" at the bottom, but you have to be careful with that. You should be resisting the weight through the whole range of motion right up until about an inch before you bottom out. That way you get to use the elasticity in your muscles to help you out of the bottom position. It helps you explode up. But like I said, if you hit parallel and then all of a sudden just drop ass-to-grass and try to bounce up, you'll damage your knees.

It is personal preference. There are definitely high-bar squatting powerlifters. Low-bar is just more common.
