Looking for an image subreddit with minimal rules? Check out /r/images

A place to share interesting photographs and pictures. Feel free to post your own, but please read the rules first (see below), and note that we are not a catch-all for general images (of screenshots, comics, etc.)

Spoiler code

Please mark spoilers like this:
[text here](/spoiler)

Hover over to read.

Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), weight loss photos, posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. Weight loss photos go in /r/loseit, DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

You might be on to something there.

I mean, if they can travel across interstellar space, how hard can it be for them to edit a wiki?

You underestimate how little of a life some of the Wiki guardians actually have. The aliens are advanced, yes, but they cannot slip past the endless vigil.

Also, I can't remember where I read this, but if you look at the sky and see tiny white dots darting about over your vision, that's actually your white blood cells. Notice that they seem to move with your heartbeat. Since blood capillaries lie over your rods and cones, the WBCs absorb a tiny bit of light. Cool, huh?

Wait, that's not normal? TIL

[–]ireferencepsychology 39 points40 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

If you get 'Visual Snow' with any other symptoms including palinopsia, tinnitus, halo/rays around lights, light sensitivity, floaters, phosphenes, blue field entoptic phenomenon etc...

First-of-its kind research is being done into visual snow at the University of California, San Francisco Headache Center. Please email VS-Research@Neurology.ucsf.edu if you wish to be interviewed over the phone to help in finding a cause for these cluster of symptoms. It does not matter if you've had it all your life, or suddenly developed it later in life.

For science, of course.

edit: It should be noted that I am not affiliated in any way with the study, just spreading the word.

[–][deleted] 15 points16 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I just learned this isn't normal! I have this in conjunction with tinnitus and frequent migraines. I'll be emailing you via the intertubes.

[–]rbysa 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You scared me! Note that if you only see "snow" from blue backgrounds it is perfectly normal. It is called "Blue Field Entoptic Phenomenon."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blue_field_entoptic_phenomenon

[–]eyeonvision 2 points3 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I actually AM affiliated with this study. I'm the founder of the Eye On Vision Foundation (a 501c3). We funded what might be the first research into this condition a few years ago, and after four years of trying to get to this point, we're finally into the first stages of patient study with this new research study - and we're obviously really excited about it!

We do need your help if you're a VS (visual snow) sufferer. We've been doing our best to find people willing to participate in the study, but our pool has been limited to a small, but very active forum full of others looking for a solution to this incredibly frustrating condition. It's pretty clear based on the comments here that most people suffering don't even know that it's abnormal... so please, if you're suffering get in touch using the email address above, or the information below.

If you're not sure if you're suffering from VS, you can learn a little more about it at Eye On Vision Foundation, or just send me a personal email to EyeOnVision@gmail.com. My email address is on the site, and I'll personally answer any questions you might have. I'll also fill you in on any details of the study if you want more information on that too.

[–]nevdash 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I also used to think it was normal until I stumbled upon that entry a few years ago. Now it's just sad imagining how easy life must be without it.

Also, I'd call us snow brothers, but that sounds way too much like eskimo brothers.

[–]ginoohgino 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

and TIL that there's all kinds of cool shit going on in there! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Entoptic_phenomenon

something i "discovered" myself - shine a bright light at the corner of a chromed object (you want to create a "pinprick" of light) and hold it really close to your eye - much closer than you could focus on. the bokeh disc of light will seem sharp, and you will see the shadow of your eyelashes, in focus!

More than that, if you then squint, nearly shutting your eyelids, you can see that you are pushing the liquid film on the surface of your eye with your lid - and lines of residue are clearly visible when you re-open your eye.

I don't understand what's happening there, maybe someone can explain? might have to do an "askscience"..

[–]citruspers 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Squinting makes your affective aperture smaller, meaning you will have a larger depth of field (your "area of focus" is larger).

I was a dumb kid.

[–]Plornt 1 point2 points ago

I dont get floaters but fuck I thought vision was just generally like a crappy camera. I dont get it as bad as in the image and its always there just more prominent when I close and reopen my eyes for a few seconds. Odd though.

I have that bastard VS as well. Realized about one year ago. If you don't have them already, I was prescribed glasses that are similar to those that help astigmatism and they actually help with reading and dealing with everyday life in terms of making things a little clearer. Also, antidepressants (i'm on citalopram) helped me to not let VS bother me as much as it used to, which it really fucking did.

[–]nomatu18935 3 points4 points ago

I don't know if this is true. In some conditions you can see white blood cells moving through capillaries in front of the retina. It's called the blue field entoptic phenomenon.

When I was a kid, I always thought these were microscopic bugs that were trapped at the centre of your eye, which acted like a magnifying lens, so you could see them.

Sometimes that will happen to me if I am on the verge of "seeing stars" for whatever reason, regardless of whether or not I actually do. Interesting. I wonder if seeing stars is because of massively increased bloodflow to the head resulting in too much blood in the eyes, therefore absorbing the same wavelength that causes this same phenomena?

I've never been able to describe this well enough to figure out what it is. I've been wondering - and worrying - about this for quite a long time and I've never known if it's bad or not.

[–]pilotpistolpete 22 points23 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You`re not missing out on anything. Basically, the blood vessels that supplied your eye when it was developing is no longer used deteriorates. This leaves a chance of some of that matter to float around and settle in your vision.

Its a pain in the ass as it is distracting, especially pale walls, light up screens and the sky. However, your eyes are clever and will systematically remove them. This takes years though for large ones

[–]cromulency 23 points24 points ago

However, your eyes are clever and will systematically remove them

[–]pilotpistolpete 9 points10 points ago

Sorry, that was badly worded.

Your brain is what will recognize and ignore them. I don't have any good sources other that the cheap .about and health sites. However, being as I had horrible floaters (I had one in my left eye that I called the giant worm), after a few months I started to notice them going blurry, less visible, to now almost invisible. If I find myself thinking about and looking for them, I will start to see them again.

[–]DivinusVox 6 points7 points ago

I name a few of the more resilient floaters. There was this one monster of a floater that I instinctively called Clusterfuck. However, to be more appropriate, I named it C.L.U.

"Oh, squiggly line in my eye fluid. I see you lurking there on the periphery of my vision. But when I try to look at you, you scurry away. Are you shy, squiggly line? Why only when I ignore you, do you return to the center of my eye? Oh, squiggly line, it's alright, you are forgiven."

This is exactly what I always thought when I was a child. Is it impossible that this collagen is condensed by the focussed sunbeam? It is said that floaters grow in size or number during the years, bute mine are the same since 18 years or so.

When I got a little older, I stopped thinking it was "molecules" and just thought it was a sign of the onset of schizophrenia. So once again, I didn't tell anyone. Finally saw a link about it on Reddit a few years back. Thank you Redditors!

"Yes, it's in focus! Wait, no. Floaters. Fuck".

What really annoys me (except for the fucking floaters themselves) is the total dismissal doctors seem to have towards this phenomena. OK, so it's not life threatening - it's even sort of a first world problem - but it's so disruptive and irritating, and so many people suffer from it... How come no one has bothered with a solution yet?

I have a few in my left eye and I will pay good money for a safe treatment that will rid me of these damnable floaters. I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one. Ophthalmologists - go for it!

Anybody else have the fun of the occasional ocular migraine? It's not a headache, as the name implies - it's a transient phenomena where you see a flashing shape (I always liken it to the experience of looking through a raindrop on a piece of glass) move across your field of vision. It flashes or shines a little bit around the edges, and lasts for fifteen to twenty minutes. I get an annual eye check, without fail, and I highly recommend it. If you've got insurance, take advantage of it. They still aren't sure exactly what causes these (I don't have detached retina or macular degen), but believe it's something in the optic nerve. I'm 48, and it's happened three or four times in my life. It will get your attention, believe me. :)

I've had that happen many times. Relieved to know it's not my brain tripping without the benefit of drugs.I'm 54,I'd say it started maybe 5 years ago,I haven't had one in at least a year.

Kind of scary the first time - I was at the eye doctor as fast as my feet would carry me (grin). I'm glad I haven't been driving, I would have to pull over for sure. Getting older is just a non stop good time, ain't it (although, the doc swore it was not age related, so who knows!)

Now that you've given it a name I could look up (thank you) I see that stress can be a factor and I first started getting this during a very stressful time in my life .I experienced them less since the stress subsided.

Im 36, and I have that 3 or 4 times a year. It's really annoying when it happens at work (can't read from the computer screen anymore) and almost dangerous when driving.

And, that in the pic too.

Retinal Migraine

I get these, as well as my dad and brother, it's familial. It stops coding dead. Usually happens when 2 projects overlap, or early in a new project when all the new models are getting absorbed.

Of course I knew it couldn't be atoms, way too small to be able to see. I instead thought they were molecules. Lots more! Check it out! Learn a lot! :)

Eye doc here. Floaters are very common I have a ton of them myself. If you notice any you should def get your eyes dilated once a year and keep a lookout for any new floaters cuz that could be a sign of retinal holes, which are treatable.

[–]SomeoneWhoIsntYou 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Someone told me as a kid that they were worms you get from biting your fingernails. The same ones you get in your butt that makes your butt itch. But that they migrate to your eyes eventually. That's pretty much an exact quote.

STEWIE: Oh, squiggly line in my eye fluid, I see you there, lurking on the periphery of my vision. But when I try to look at you, you scurry away. Are you shy, squiggly line?

Why only when I ignore you do you return to the center of my eye? Oh, squiggly line, it's all right. You are forgiven.

[–]pilotpistolpete 2 points3 points ago

Have an optometrist have a look at your eye(s). It probably is a floater and completely harmless, but it can also be a sign of retinal tearing. The optometrist will give you drops to dilate the pupil so he can look for tears.

If all is good, then congratulations, you now will see crap in your eyes for the rest of your life. Welcome to the club!

[–]awyeah2 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

(Not a doctor) From what I have been told, a few of these over time are normal. But if they suddenly appear, they can be a sign of something very bad happening to your eyes - torn retina - which leads to permanent blindness. But if you see a doctor about it immediately, they can be fixed.

I just have a few - even so, every year at my eye exam, I ask my doctor to look at them to make sure they're just "garden variety."

But I will concur - go see an eye doctor TODAY - they will likely be able to fit you in if you tell them what's happening - it's better to be safe than sorry.

When I go on a plane in a pressurised cabin I get something happen to my eyes. It isn't floaters, but I see a strange grey and round kaleidoscope pattern in my vision (that's the only way I can describe it).. I do think its something to do with the pressurisation on my eyes though. I've tried to search but I only ever get results for floaters and its definitely nothing like what the OP posted. Anybody know?

I remember first running into these things while taking my SAT test end of senior year high school. I was looking at the test and kept thinking a bug was flying in my vision. When I realized they weren't bugs, I thought I was going blind and damaged my eyes some how. I didn't mention them to anyone until a year later, I brought it up at a family dinner. My grandma says to me "oh those are just floaters, I have them too." LOL.

You're lucky, 5 years ago I had a rare eye infection that left me with an entire visual field composed of floaters, reducing my vision in one eye by ~50%. Many of them have reabsorbed, but i still have way more than normal in one eye.

[–]BatteryGraveyard 1 point2 points ago

I have glaucoma and amblyopia, along with a shit-ton of these floaters. Not sure if that is common with most early 20's cases of those, but trust me when I say that it is beyond annoying. And not just when staring at the sky.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I've always had floaters, but one day all of sudden they got thicker and more, so I started worrying and for almost a year I was being miserable looking at them and if anything looked strange and I would freak out and call my optician. If you are worried about floaters, there is 'nothing' you can do about it, just stay calm and one day you will get used to them, sooner than you think :)

[–]Parchedflame 1 point2 points ago

I hope someone can diagnose this.

This only happened when I'm looking in the sky when it's day. I see thousands of circles, slightly hues with red, green, and blue. Out of these circles are tiny crescent-shaped figures that shoot out of the circle, travel a very short distance, and then they just fade. This happens with each and every circle in my eye and it happens quite rapidly. About 3 times a second on average.

EDIT: happens*
