Lets all leave facebook for google+ and then in 4 months we can make this joke about facebook

[–]HittingSmoke 42 points43 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

My G+ feed is fairly active. As soon as I had invites to give out I whored my fucking ass off all over Facebook, exported my address book and spammed email invites to everyone and told them to get the fuck on G+.

Turned out, only the people I'm interested in talking to bothered to accept the invites so it was a win-win. Leave the idiots on Facebook.

Indeed I'm happy most people are still on Facebook. The people I want to talk to are on Google+ or I talk to them every day anyways.

[–]djohns23 32 points33 points ago

Likewise. The people who actually post interesting things I like to hear about post on G+. All the people I regret adding in the first place are on Facebook. Also, the following feature is amazing.

[–]heartbraden 5 points6 points ago

Exactly, I keep having to remove people for talking too much and filling up my stream. But not everyone has friends.

[–]gaoshan 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I have a "That Guy" stream for those people. If I log in and find a page full of relatively bland posts by the same person, into "That Guy" they go.

You remind me of a South Park episode.

[–]heartbraden -3 points-2 points ago

[–]HittingSmoke 4 points5 points ago

But not everyone has friends.

Because you seem to think that the number of people friended on your social network = friends.

[–]heartbraden -2 points-1 points ago

Ahh yes, of course, how did I miss that? But I meant "friends on G+", since that's what it terms them. Not IRL friends. That is confusing.

They fucked it up with the "beta" or whatever that was. It would have been a lot more successful if it was opened initially. They should have just stockpiled on servers.

[–]55555 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yep. this has been the issue with everything google produces. even gmail could have been more universal if they had opened it up right away.

[–]CSI_Tech_Dept 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

GMail still succeeded because it had things that no other webmail at the time offered: huge storage space (I remember 10MB limits on some), POP3 (they added IMAP later), very good spam filter, different way of organizing mail etc.

What G+ offers that other sites don't? There's no much motivation to do the switch for most of the people.

Oh, also GMail had a huge additional benefit. If you switched to GMail you didn't need your friends to do the same to still interact with them.

[–]thecoshman 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I think that is the fundamental problem with anything that is not facebook, it is not going to be facebook.

[–]CSI_Tech_Dept 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Not really. You might not remember, but MySpace once was THE social site which everyone was using.

When they showed up they had following advantages:

  1. no ads (MySpace had so many ads to the point of ridiculousness, FB have ads now, but not as much as MySpace had)
  2. closed to university students and everyone there used their real names.
  3. clean design (MySpace allowed to customize your own page, which was disastrous, since most people who customized their profile had no idea about HTML. People were joking that MySpace pages should be used for stress testing of the web browsers.)
  4. cool web 2.0 behavior. If you clicked on a link it not necessarily had to load a new page it just updated specific part of the site.
  5. cool features, like picture tagging, planning events etc.
  6. felt more professional, people were more mature etc (it changed once they opened it to everyone and also everyone from MySpace came there).
  7. it was fast (MySpace was very slow at its peak).

[–]thecoshman 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

True enough. But is faebook not used by more people, thus there is even greater reason to stick with facebook. I have heard so many people say that they will only leave when all the friends do.

[–]CSI_Tech_Dept 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Same thing happened during MySpace time. Some people will be the last one to moved but the move is possible.

What is needed is something that people want that current network doesn't have and might not be able to provide. Did you notice that once G+ got open facebook quickly added (or made them more visible) features that were strong on G+ side?

They know that it is critical, because that's how they took over the MySpace in the first place.

What a new network needs to have is to be fundamentally different. Something that facebook can't quickly adapt to and at the same time it is something that people would want.

Oh, and offering privacy would be a huge plus, but that could only come through decentralization, and most companies wouldn't want to do that, since it's harder to make money out of something like that.

I just meant in general. In Gmail they are are a tiny bar and you can turn that one off. In search they are either to the side out of the way, or highlighted at the top where I can ignore them.

I bet the if Google ever got into bill boards, they would be invisible to you if you did not want to look at them

meh. i use it daily... sure it's not as active as my facebook... but you know what? i ignore about 85% of the posts that appear on my "news feed" on facebook because they are either spam, teenage complains, first world problems, stupid bullshit, funny things from the internet straight from 1995, etc... while on google+... well... it's a sausage fest, yeah, but the vast majority of people there are people related to the computer industry... and for myself, being a software engineer (like the majority of people there), kinda feels like home. i find 95% of the posts to be insightful, interesting, etc.

[–]Tooch10 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I used to use it daily when the mass Reddit migration happened and it was ok, but very few (like three or four) of my Facebook friends switched over. Even they used it for a couple weeks and disappeared. I think G+ should not have been invite-only on launch day so more people could have joined. Now it just seems like the friendly and welcoming vibe of meeting new people that existed back in July/August is gone and it's just a few cliques that talk to each other. I haven't really used it now for about a month because I lost interest in it.

[–]RadicalRaid 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'm doing my part to fill my G+ stream, but only one other person is joining me. So basically, we're just talking back and forth to each other when sharing stuff.

It's a special kind of social networking I guess.

[–]FearlessFreep -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Meet new people

Search for your city to find interesting people in your city that you can share events, local politics about

Search for your hobbies to find people who have similar interests.

Be sure to peruse recommendations from time to time to see if someone you know has joined unknowingly or some other connection can be made

Many of my friends aren't on G+ yet but more are joining every week and in the meantime I've met some pretty cool people

Sweet jellybean jelly, but I love that folks think that Google+ is a graveyard. I end up following links/starting conversations via my circle feeds at a far, far higher rate than I do in Facebook (where I'm effectively ignoring 90% of the content).

The other beautiful thing about Google+ - Getting in on at launch meant that many of the folks I'd never have a chance to converse with (comic book folk, musicians, etc) not only added me back, but I've made a ton of professional and friendly connections I'd never have been able to make via Facebook.

[–]antrover 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Wow. We're still talking about G+'s lack of activity? It's kind of like saying, "All my friends are boring, therefor, all people are boring".

Facebook is filled with Myspace-like posts. Just look at the frontpage of reddit and you'll find all those immature and boring Facebook wall screenshots.

Examples of current facebook screenshots on the homepage of reddit: http://www.reddit.com/r/funny/comments/mowi1/guys_moments_of_silence_please/ http://www.reddit.com/r/funny/comments/moiok/im_really_good_in_bed/ http://www.reddit.com/r/funny/comments/mosom/name_censorship_failure/ http://www.reddit.com/r/funny/comments/mou94/the_only_reason_to_get_a_tattoo/

Remember when it took time for a service to become popular? Twitter, Facebook and Myspace didn't rise to fame overnight either. Give it time.

Also: People don't seem to know how to spell on Facebook.

You must be doing it wrong. G+ has recently started cutting into the time I spend of reddit. So many things on the front page turn up in my stream or on "whats hot?" first. Way more going on than I ever saw on facebook.

[–]Awesomeade 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

This is not a criticism of the service, but a criticism of the advertising. I vastly prefer Google+ and when I have the option of contacting someone through G+ or facebook, I use G+. I only hope that eventually enough people I care about get a G+ account for me to justify deleting my Facebook.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'm sick and feeling like shit but had to chime in on this: bullshit.

Google+ is freaking awesome. They are doing the right things. They're isolating game/quizzes and other bullshit form your main stream. You can pick and choose circles with different rules that fit your needs.

For instance, it suggests people not only because you went to same school, worked at the same place, or so forth. They also suggest people based on some black magic algorithm that just make sense. I'm fairly technical person and right now my main stream is very, very active with RELEVANT information. As soon as some entity starts with some nonsense, boot them out of the circle and problem solved. They recently added G+ pages and a whole lot of business have started their pages which you are free to ignore.

To say that G+ is dead, it's simply bullshit.

Interestingly enough, it looks like all the people that I would not add on Facebook (new people from work for example) I add on G+, especially since we use Google Hangout a lot in my team/company. I find it that the circles concept makes it just easier to group people. I think that's the way they can build their network, get people to use it for different circles of people then the other people will get drawn to it or added naturally.

I read an article the other day that had an interesting idea about google+. It said it was never suppose to be a competitor to facebook really. Google is funded by ad revenue, they made 33.3bn off ads. This mixed with their ability to integrate their web apps to work together makes google+ more of a persona for your web searches. It's basically there to know who you are so the google search engine can find better results for you and to better market to you specifically. They threw in the social network because they could, but I don't think they intended on competing directly with facebook.

[–]stoicsmile 0 points1 point ago*

There is a story of a woman who lived in the Old West who wrote poetry and tied it to tumbleweed. It would drift out across the prairie and occasionally, a wandering cowboy would find one. I always thought that was a very beautiful medium of art. It is both desperate and lonely, but also intimate and hopeful. It either reaches no one or just one, lonely, lost person.

Maybe I should start writing poems on Google +

Edit: Couldn't find a source that said if this story was true, but I did find this poem that tells the story I heard.

I'm seeing that happen to Google+ pretty quick. Pretty much every friend request I have now is some rapper, porn site, or chinese spammer. It's a total waste of time for me. :/

I love google+, because the only people I know who use it are my nerdiest friends. Essentially I use facebook to keep in touch with my family and google+ for everything interesting and useful.

Honestly, Google+ is still 18 or over. Pretty idiotic since it seems that most of Facebook is below 18.

How the hell is that idiotic? That's amazing. That's an awesome idea.
