A huge part of it also is that things you thought mattered start seeming trite and boring. You start wondering why you used to be interested in the stuff you were interested in.

I'm 41 and doing pretty well and looking really good for my age. But for how much longer? I can keep fit but there's sort of a slippery slope.

Homer: I was in a record store, and they were playing
all these bands I'd never heard of.
It was like the store had gone crazy.

Marge: Record stores have always seemed crazy to me.
Music is none of my business.

Homer: That's all well and good for you,
but I used to rock and roll all night and party ev-e-ry day.
Then it was every other day.
Now I'm lucky to find half an hour a week in which to get funky.
I've got to get out of this rut and back into the groove.

Wait till you hit 40. I guess all you young people on Reddit think that 46 is old. I can honestly tell you that you go to bed one night and wake up and you are 40. It happens so damned fast. The first time you hurt your back will be the wake up call. I just had 3 disks in my spine fused and tons of arthritis scraped out of my lumbar bones. Getting old sucks physically, but mentally I feel 20 and I think I always will. :-)

What they don't tell you is, they skip a generation, and then they recycle "it". They make "it" cool again, but only after stripping it down, giving it a different paint job, and completely missing the fucking point.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Everything is "that" though. The cycle continues until "it" is kneaded and worked into our collective consciousness until it becomes a named thing. "It" will be reflected in many aspects of society; speech, architecture, fashion, art etc. With every new iteration of a specific "it", it will generally fade and be reduced until it is a fashionable flair or accent on a car seat or something, a little acknowledgement to the past.

If "it" can survive that final phase it will go on to provide a creative spark for someone making a new "thing", a thing that will mark a new era of society. And this is how fashion and style can go by seemingly unchanged for years, but then a look backwards will seem alien. How strange to us is a guy stuck living in the 70s? To him he never left.

I am really interested in the snapshots that each decade has. Nothing illustrates what I am talking about better than just the fonts that radio stations use in their music logos. 50's, 60's, 70's, 80's, 90's etc. You get some type of back splash that tries to encompass all of the little "it"s of a decade in little symbols and crap that barely make sense on a conscious level.

Even taking it a step further, think about culture shock. We are so comfortable living in our here and now, so accustomed to the things around us. But look at tribal rituals of some crazy tribe in Africa, and shit is incomprehensible to us. Trying to even look at a different culture is like trying to read a bunch of white noise on a tv screen or something. Now I know how the native americans must have felt when they first saw sailing ships and horses and crap like that.

Pop culture and all the little "it"s that make things up is really what gives us a bearing as to where we are.

[–]Weakness 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The thing that you don't see .. is that they didn't miss the point, there never was a fucking point. It was marketing and sales when they did it in the 60's/70's/80's and it is marketing and sales now.

[–]clintonthegeek 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Hippies wore jeans because they were working class. Now we have designer jeans that cost hundreds of dollars. Granola bars were a simple, home-made alternative to processed pre-packaged food that you could make from a few cheap all-natural ingredients. Now they're processed, pre-packaged, and have a million ingredients and preservatives like everything else.

Anything that had a point was something "they" weren't selling and marketing yet. The point was lost when "they" started. So yes, things that are marketed and sold have no point, but there certainly was a point at one time to the things marketed and sold.

It's the circle of life folks.

When you get to highschool you realize what an idiot you were in grade school.

When you get to college you realize what a loser you were in high school.

When you get a real job in the "real world" you realize how stupid you were in college.

When you become a parent you realize how immature you were before that.

That's all i got so far, but I'm sure when my kids get to grade school and I see all the weird shiat that passes for cool it'll start all over and I'll think their they're all retarded.

EDIT - fixed my their/they're booboo. I never do that so I'm giving myself a pass this time, and you all upvotes for calling me out

You know what maturity feels like when you can look back on those and accept that you were like that, seeing the good and the bad as just a step in your life.

If you can actually do that and feel little to no regret, you are better than many. Feel good, if that's what matters. You are living your one life after all.

I'm under the impression that I'll look back at college-me, and real-world me will be super jealous about how much money was handed to college-me and how much college-me could drink on any given night.

[–]nostalgicBadger 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

"Real world" me can still drink on any given night. I won't necesesarily be thrilled about it in the morning, but that was true in college too. Also, unless none of that money is being handed to you in the form of loans, "real world" you might not be thrilled when you realize how much it actually cost.

[–]north7 1 point2 points ago

I got it totally different. At high school I realized what a happily naive kid I was in grade school. At college I realized what a stupid I was in high school, for thinking myself as a looser all the time, instead of enjoying things a little more and don't giving a fuck. That's all I got so far...

I became it around that age! I inherited a lot of old school jungle and DnB from my brother when I was young, and then, when I went to uni in 2004, DnB had a massive revival in the UK and suddenly I was the cool guy that knew about the best DJs and venus. Then I got bored and moved on to more melodic/technical stuff while everyone else went to gabba and dubstep.

Twitter isn't cool with kids, most of their users are in their late 20s and 30s.

It takes a bit of getting used to but I don't know how I lived without it, it's fascinating to see streams of information from journalists and people in the middle of major world events - as they happen and often hours or days before they hit the media.

[–]Captain_English 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

As I commented to my seniors at work (I'm 22) whilst helping them with their computer - it's not their fault they don't understand it in detail. It just came along past the time when they would ever be used to that sort of thing the way those of us who grew up with them are.

I pointed out that what scares me is the amount they've changed in the time I've been alive. Keeping currency is a time consuming task. What will be invented or adopted in my life that will leave me feeling "well, I'm not comfortable with that."

Anyone here seen the film eXistEnz? Yeah. Fuck that.

[–]pYrO1v1aniac 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I feel as though I'm breaching into that point now.

As the entire world goes nuts over iPads, I sit there saying "What's the fucking point of it". I got a touchscreen android smartphone to give the technology a chance, and all I do is make calls and texts and play sonic the hedgehog, I couldn't give a rats ass about all the widgets and apps and facebook connect shit. I have a strong suspicion that nobody actually uses these things the way the ads pretend, and they're basically portable web browser phones.

When they changed my preferred desktop environment to one with a dock, I stuck with the older version, because I find it more efficient. Am I now like the guys who still control their computer through console commands?

I think I might actually be going backwards (or sideways) from what's in, seeing as I recently stripped out my facebook profile, and am seriously considering deleting the damn thing.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

What will be invented or adopted in my life that will leave me feeling "well, I'm not comfortable with that.

I think thoughts like this whenever I see just how much my grandparents struggle to understand my computer or even a smartphone. It's just so far outside their frame of reference that they can never quite wrap their heads around it. I find even explaining what a search required me to speak in metaphors.

I like to think our generation will be better suited to adapting and keeping up as we were born in a time when things can change massively in only a few years.

Mobile phones only became common place in the mid to late 90's, internet likewise. mp3 players etc.

Its crazy seeing my much younger cousins and thinking that as far as they're concerned all this stuff has always been.

Excuse the rambling nature of the above post.

I'm 40. When I look at what is "it", it looks the same as the "it" that was "it" when I was 18 even though "it" has changed many times in the past 20 years. In fact some of what is "it" now was actually "it" when it was "it" for my parents. It would seem that this generations "it" is actually a mix of the two previous generations of "it".

I wonder if generations before us (us being 20-something year olds) looked at the kids 5-6 years younger then them and shat their pants in fear. I mean, I know memories tend to change as time goes on, but shit man. High schoolers are so much different now then they were 8 years ago when I was starting.

The same goes for all my friends. We look at the younger kids from our generation, and I absolutely know for a fact that we were not like them.

Age 25 here. Does anyone remember when videogames, mainly in the early 90's, were trying to be "rad" and "hip" but was regarded as a "nerd" hobby or uncool? How it was once in a blue moon to see a video game commercial, how most of the "cool" kids thought it was stupid to play games instead of sports? Now look at it. It's shameful to put someone like me in the same category as the "CAWW O DOOTY" kiddies. Yeah, games are still considered a "nerdy" hobby (World of Warcraft) but it's very socially acceptable to talk about them now than it was in elementary / middle school.

[–]funkme1ster 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Playing casual games is considered cool because everyone does it.

Playing hardcore games (in this case, I mean genres like simulation that require significant time sinks to get anything done and involve a high degree of effort) is still nerdy because it carries the connotations that you'd rather whittle away your days in these fantasy worlds than interact with people.

Call of Doody.

Cack of Doody. What a dreadful piece of garbage that game is. And they could EASILY have made something good.

I'm 23... I was never proud to be from my generation... I mean, we have the fucking Spice Girls...

But what kids are into now? makes me sick.

[–]psyki 41 points42 points ago

WTF? I'm 32 and MY generation suffered the Spice Girls. The Spice Girls were popular when you were 6. In first grade.

Granted your generation had it a lot worse, but at least be honest.

[–]Jackomo 2 points3 points ago

I'm 25, my sister's 28. I remember my sister was too old for them (she was part of the Take That generation) but girls in my year were loving it. I think you're coming at it from the POV of someone who had already developed their musical tastes, and could see the Spice Girls as the commercial, manufactured rubbish that they were, but we were young enough to be around kids that loved that kind of stuff. I doubt many of your female friends had Spice Girls themed parties.

[–]dasbush 5 points6 points ago

I'm 24 - Spice Girls were EVERYWHERE IN GRADE 1. It was awful.

You know how a kid will want you to read the same book over and over again for a bedtime story?

Yeah, seven year old girls with Spice Girls. Terrible.

[–]darkfade 1 point2 points ago

The vast majority of them aren't even bands. As far as I can tell, the Backstreet Boys and that Sync one don't even play instruments. Therefore, that makes them singing groups not bands.

Pro-tip: Quick way to get a group of girls in their early 20s to have a bonding moment is to blast Spice Girls and let the nostalgia kick in.

[–]fadetowhite 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Pretty sure that works for women of any age, but particularly 25-35.

Someone who is 20 was only 6 or 7 when "Wannabe" was huge. But someone who is 29 was 15 or 16: a lot more into music and would be much more nostalgic about dancing around with her friends.

We may have been young, but we still loved it. I danced to that song on my playground. In retrospect, that is a little weird that we were so into it so young.

also 23, I think the first time this hit me was when I went to the mall one day and all the kids had hoodies with crazy multi-coloured patters and bright neon everything going on, Also when I started seeing every kid wearing skinny jeans, apparently they were not just for the emo crowd anymore (no one uses that phrase any more either).

Me either. I mean, I'm only 21, but I believe I narrowly missed out on all that shit. In one way, my generation was very boring, we had no "scenes" or any of that shit. We didn't have goths, and even now, most hipsters are either 18 or 30. I mean sure, some of my friends were skaters when they were 12 or whatever, but everyone is retarded at that age. I have never felt "with it", but then I never really gave a fuck either.

Do you actually "hate" how much you "relate" to that or are you just looking for attention OP? You can change, you know, and you can change in a way that you enjoy "it" whilst being a complete shill and enjoy your own life. You don't have to become things you like or enjoy...

Personally I think you're just looking for attention and/or validation of however you live your life right now, probably because you're a good old coward.

Come on your 20. My Grandma is 83 and my dad 63, they feel like this.

Lets put it into perspective, my Grandma was 20 in 1948. The war just ended and she was in a refugee camp in Belgium, working in a factory. She is 83, healthy and living in a nice neighbourhood in Canada.

She feels out of it. Her Glenn Miller doesn't play on the radio anymore because most of the people who liked it when she did...are dead. Now that sucks.

But for the record, she says that life passes by in a flash. Last thing she knew she was 20, then 30 then 80. She can't believe it, she can't believe she is a great-grandma now.

Always, in the course of a species' existence, there is a side note. A form of the species where-in nature tried something new, just in case, and it failed miserably. Not that the life form itself wasn't viable, just that the life form was far enough removed from useful that no individuals of the original species wanted to mate with it. That is how I view Rebecca Black. Even my three year old said "that's not nice music".

[–]Ghost_In_The_Ape 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

"It" is too general. Realize that when you were younger and "with it" you weren't "it" to some of your peers.

Liked hip hop? Well the punk and goth kids hated you. Liked alternative? Well metalheads saw you as weak. You were the soccer captain? Well you're only cool in other countries besides the US.

When I turned 20 I was also tired of all the charade. I fantasized about moving to other countries. But it was then when I found my cultural self, lets not confuse that with professional self, I still have no idea what I want to do. But I found identity in a niche of people. It is impossible to be "cool" with mass appeal at anytime in your life.

All you can do is pick a side and be respectful of others, no matter how shit-throwing monkey insane the others turn out to be. Just realize that you are not alone on your side. There may however, be rarity, or distance between people like you. But the internet has closed those gaps. Love my little ponies? There's a forum for you. Love the ship-in-a-bottle craft? There's a forum for you. Believe George Bush is an intergalactic space lizard? There's a forum for you. Just be honest with yourself because at any givin moment there's someone out there who is going to hate you no matter what you do in life.

So fuck it, i'm gonna go eat my pizza with a fork.
