Christopher Hitchens response to this is genius, "I'll think for you".

I'll sacrifice some virgins, for you.

Not that I agree with you getting downvoted, but if you're both asking for the same thing why would God say no to one person but yes to another and how would you know the difference of who he is saying yes to?

It appears that your argument is a simile comparing it to a petition but do you really think that you can make God change his mind? Furthermore, if you can change God's mind either he made a mistake or you know better than God right? It seems a bit odd to me. I'm interested to hear your response.

Upvotes to you.

Oh man, it's a good thing that you're using your working ability to pray and get god to take action on really useful stuff. So, when are you asking for world peace, or a cure for AIDS, or to stop people from starving to death in Africa?

You know, since God is totally listening to you, and you know it for a fact...

[–]brooke_chase 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'm guessing you're responding to me in error? 'Cause I wasn't saying any of that, i'm of the atheist persuasion but I was just trying to talk civilly to the guy, something I would encourage you to do as well friend. You catch more flies with honey etc.

[–]punkyjewster03 0 points1 point ago*

Actually, if we're going to talk about flies, a big steaming pile of shit is your best bet. Hence, why you see huge crowds at revivals.

The point that Hitchens doesn't understand is God might not be listening to him, but that doesn't mean he isn't listening to me.

He gets the point just fine. He just doesn't think that there even exists a god to listen to either of you. And that attempting telepathic communication to plead with a magical creature we've no reason to think exists, in spite of consistent evidence showing that such attempts do nothing to actually alter circumstances, displays a lack of thinking.

It's a harsher response than I'd use, but it's not like Hitchens simply hasn't considered that God might be real and responding to other people's prayers.

[–]palparepa 0 points1 point ago

Then you have it easy: next time you pray, ask God about what to say to us. Only after you receive an answer, post here. Let see what an omniscient being can come up with.

"God might not be listening to him, but that doesn't mean he isn't listening to me. I pray a few times a day"

I sometimes talk to myself... I don't expect anything to magically change because of it.

[–]jorsiem 11 points12 points ago

I will talk to myself all alone in my room tonight... FOR YOU.

[–]wickedlikethreesixes[S] 6 points7 points ago

I meant it in the context that said Christians were praying BECAUSE I'm an atheist.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Ah, yeah. In that case, I apologize for presuming and agree with the sentiment.

[–]Cavemonster 26 points27 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Really?

Humans are a social species. Hell, most of the value of r/atheism is in the social value of knowing that you're not alone and that others sympathize with your problems.

Now, when a Christian say they'll pray for me BECAUSE I'm an atheist, that's insulting because it casts my view of the world as a problem, but when they say they'll pray for me when I'm sick or having any kind of personal problems, it's at least partially a way of conveying that social and emotional support that most humans respond to.

If knowing that people see and sympathize with your struggles wasn't valuable in and of itself, then r/atheism would be a muuuch smaller place.

[–]egalitarianusa 17 points18 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Then tell me they support/ sympathise with me. Praying is often an excuse to do nothing while getting the ego boost of thinking something is being done because of the prayer.

[–]sraybell 20 points21 points ago

It is literally the least they could do.

[–]Sex_E_Searcher 6 points7 points ago

If you're getting open heart surgery, and a relative says they're praying for you, would you prefer they show up and try to help the surgeon instead?

[–]flanl 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

hahaha bravo!

but really, they could make a dish for your nuclear family or for you to eat when you get home, so that you don't have to cook a night after surgery

[–]h00pla 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's too bad they can't do that because prayer is mutually exclusive to everything else.

[–]questionablemoose 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That's simply not true. There are actually religious folk who will pray and get off their ass and do something. When I was still religious, some of the church members did in fact treat others like family and take care of people who needed it. My mother devoted her life to helping other people.

Either you've gotten really, really unlucky, or you've got a serious case of willful ignorance going on.

[–]h00pla 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I know it's untrue, I manage to do both quite often. I was speaking sarcastically (which I understand always run the great risk of being misunderstood) that many people seem to think that someone saying they'll pray for another person precludes them doing something else for that person as well.

[–]questionablemoose 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Oh, well in that case, my apologies. Sarcasm detector is broken.

[–]flanl 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

sarcasm detectors are not yet sufficiently advanced enough as to be effective over this medium.

i dont know what dumbasses downvoted either of you, but here, take some upvotes. religious people can be very sweet and helpful, my family is living proof

[–]questionablemoose 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Hey thanks.

I hear you on the family.

Dunno about you, but I finally lost the urge to dissuade my family on religious grounds. For the most part, it works for them and what doesn't is a hangup. Everyone's got them, even us non-religious folk.

Best wishes for you and your family.

[–]Namiriel 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Show up to visit you when you're in recovery.. Show up and offer sympathy to your immediate family while you're under...

It's not like your options are 1) nothing 2) prayer 3) a farce

[–]lazyatheist 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Praying can often result in patients faring worse...yet christians don't care and do it anyway.

[–]jondiggity 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

lol when did scientific evidence ever convince a religious person otherwise?

[–]Cavemonster 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Eh, those studies don't really suggest often. And the effect that does exist seems to be down to the psychological effect of being told a team of strangers was praying for you, which is fairly different from friends and loved ones.

To suggest that Christians in general are willfully subjecting people to increased risk by praying is a real misreading of these studies.

[–]pinealbody 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I think he answered that question already.

Then tell me they support/ sympathise with me.

[–]Cavemonster 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That's how religious people express that sentiment. The majority of emotional communication is by means other than flatly stated feelings.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

To me it's the same as saying, "I have you in my thoughts" They care. They're rooting for me. I'd find life a lot more of a hassle if I found reasons to be annoyed by people who are just trying to tell me they care. Same goes for all the "Saying Grace at the table" posts. I'll stfu, wait patiently while finding something to be thankful for until they're done.

[–]questionablemoose 1 point2 points ago

I love you. At least there's some actual reason in /r/atheism. Why get offended over well wishing?

[–]sucrerey 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

often times when a fundie says it to an atheist it's not a well wishing. it's their minimized attempt to love the sinner hate the sin. sorry: screw 'em in this instance. it's meant as a rebuke.

Cavemonster says:

I like when theists say they'll pray for me IF it's in a positive way, ie:

"Oh, you're having surgery? I'll pray for you!"

However, if I hear:

"You don't believe that Jesus died for your sins?!? I'll PRAY for you!!"

I am displeased.

That is "Truman Show" featuring Jim Carrey as the only person who doesn't know he's part of a tv program the whole world is watching. It occurs during a scene in which he has noticed how weird people act and his wife starts talking about a new product in the format of an infomercial.

Tell them you blasphemed against the holy spirit.

It "can not be forgiven", if there is a "God", Christianity is now a dead end for you regardless of a stranger's prayer.

I just thank them. the sentiment is essentially the seam as the idea that they'll be thinking of me, just with a hint of delusion added in for flavor. unless you're talking about that really shitty thing that Christians sometimes do, when they tell you that they'll pray for you when you tell them that you're an atheist.

[–]NegativePositive 0 points1 point ago

[–]FakeLaughter 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You're really completely flabbergasted about what they're talking about? Are you not familiar with the concept of praying, or is this the first time you've heard of it?

[–]Parcanman 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Mark 3:28-30: “Truly I tell you, people will be forgiven all their sins and all the blasphemies they utter. But whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will never be forgiven, but is guilty of an eternal sin. He said this because they [the Pharisees] were saying, ‘He has an evil spirit’.”

Basically what that means is that if you deny the existence of the Holy Ghost, you're guilty of blaspemy and thus cannot be accepted into Heaven. So by simply saying that I'm an Atheist I am denying the Holy Ghost and thus you can pray for me all you want, your own book says I've committed an unforgivable sin which means you're wasting your time.

[–]McNinjaguy -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I live in Canada and this has only happened to me once and in my own house too. Luckily the bitch was a friend of a friend of my mom's so I told her to "go ahead and pray its not like it matters. You can have fun wasting your time". Bitch was not pleased.
