Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

I'm Polish but I can clearly hear the parents say: "Hit him." Right before the kid smacks the cat.

The cat never flees. Make no mistake, this is a tactical retreat. It will fight that child for many years to come, and always have the tactical upper hand.

For those wondering what the aftermath was, the chap in question sued the show (the show is a kind of Fear Factor thing, and most of it is scripted, but this went way above and beyond any scripting, especially when the entire crew goes to kick his ass) and allegedly won (defamation charges, at least, though I think there was more).

I felt horrible when the little bastard hit the kitty - but felt 100x when the kitty said, FU extend claws.

[–]Patti234 1288 points1289 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You mean, when the cat said "oh yeah? so it's like that huh?" and began to rearrange his face?

One day while visiting my mother's house, I caught my little brother dangerously close to cutting one of my mom's cat's ears off with a pair of scissors. Although I'm not a part of his regular upbringing, I just couldn't let this go. I asked him why he would cut the cat's ears and he said he wanted to see what the cat would do. I told him no and never to do that. I could tell he wasn't taking me seriously.

So I took the scissors from him, sat him down, kneeled down to look him in the eye and showed him the scissors. I said, "Animals feel pain just like people do. Now imagine if I wanted to cut your ears to see what you would do. How would you feel about that?". He said, "No." I said, "Are you sure? I'm kind of curious what would happen. Do you want to know what it feels like to have your ears cut with scissors?" He starts freaking out and I tell him that I never ever want to see him with scissors near the animals again.

After that, we started to see drastic improvements in his treatment towards the animals.

I'm an animal lover (dogs & cats), and like avery 51, not really a kid person. I love my little brother, but I do not wish to ever have kids of my own. I had to do something to try to protect my mom's cats and that's the best I could think of to show him how serious I was and how serious animal abuse is.

[–]asokoloski 682 points683 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Well done. That sort of thing needs to be stopped right away. He was basically just thinking of the cat as an object, and you very effectively gave him empathy for it. You may have made him a better person for life.

[–]Patti234 204 points205 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I hope so. He's a really good kid at heart. When he does stuff like this, it's not like he's being evil, it's because he doesn't really fully understand what he's doing and why he really shouldn't do it.

I used to do something similar. We had a beagle when I was like 6 or 7, and I would take his ears and hold them against the side of his head and sing, "I'm a girl, I'm a girl, but I don't have a pearl." I mean it wasn't exactly the same but he looked super mortified when I did it.

[–]PixieFurious 53 points54 points ago

Not so much for really young kids. In my experience, it takes a while for them to realize that not everything in the world is there for their benefit and that other creatures (not just humans) have emotions and feel pain. I remember explaining to the kids I babysat that animals can't talk but can still communicate and that blew their minds.

[–]bdunderscore 15 points16 points ago

Actually, empathy with other humans is, to some extent, instinctive in humans. However, like anything else, it is subject to modification by the environment you're brought up in. And, of course, empathy with animals may not be instinctive as such.

When I was little, I was following my cat trying to step on his tail, "just to see what he would do," but also because it was challenging... the cat kept flicking his tail. My dad caught me and yelled, "How would you feel if I stepped on your tail?" I replied, "I don't have a tail." So he spanked me until I understood :(... totally deserved it though.

Always helps to throw a reality check in there.

What you did was the right thing IMO, so I would not feel sorry if you had a talk to my kid (no kids) if I was not around to monitor a situation like this. I too have a strong and caring nature towards animals, so when I see these I feel heart-broken. Lets just hope that cat can take care of itself.

I psyched myself out to sound like a crazy psycho to make him believe like I was actually going to cut his ears though. I was worried about traumatizing him, but he's not scared of me now and is behaving well with the animals, so I'm thinking it worked out for the best.

When my dad bought me my first magnifying glass, I said "Awesome, let's go burn ants!"

And he said "Okay, but first let's do this-", and he took me outside and burned my hand with it. I started crying, and he said "Now, you're going to be fine. It already stopped hurting as much, didn't it? Now remember, it's okay to burn ants, but you never, ever burn an animal, because they trust you completely, and it really hurts, and as you can see, it isn't funny."

That was 30 years ago, but I still remember everything about that moment, and I never did hurt an animal... (although I don't think I would have anyway!!)

That about that for a second people. Think of a pile of ants the same size as you are. Think of how had it would be to fight off that many ants if they wanted you dead. Many of them can sting and all of them have jaws to bite. Now, imagine let's say 15 such piles for every single person alive on this planet. You had better pray they never decide to fuck with us.

That's a good lesson. But I find it interesting that he drew a line between ants and animals. They are both life. They are both self-sustained chemical systems.

I'm kinda against killing anything for fun. Not trying to be rude at all, but what do you think of that idea?

EDIT: And of course I burned ants as a kid too. And harmed plenty of insects. But now that I'm 21 my views have changed a lot. I guess I can't see any reason anymore for causing unnecessary harm to another living thing.

Here is the source video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RA2wWyDPrJ4

It's pretty clear that the child is being attacked by the cat. The kid is crying and looking around for help. From the way he holds his face, it looks like he's been scratched/bitten a few times even before the video began. Then the cat attacks him again. Then the idiot filming gives the boy the following advice (in Russian): "Hit him!" And he does.

But never mind, let's just jump to conclusions instead. Because, after all, animals are little saints who would never attack anyone without provocation. On the other hand, at 2 years of age the kid is clearly capable of understanding the full consequences of his actions, and therefore deserves to get his fucking face scratched up. And animal abuse circlejerks always make us feel so righteous and progressive, don't they?

Edit: a lot of people have pointed out that the cat was playing, not "attacking". To reformulate my point: the cat was a threat to the child, a possibility which was largely ignored by reddit.

[–]amyfarrahfowlerphd 172 points173 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

[–]StealthMode 112 points113 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Holy shit. The parent instructed him to hit the cat? And you can hear her laughing when the cat pushes him off the bed! She doesn't deserve children or pets.

The cat doesn't look like it's attacking to me. It looks like it's trying to play but never learned what amount of aggression was okay, or it's gotten too riled up and has lost its sense of how rough is too rough. I have cats who are perfectly sweet, but if they get too intensely into their "game," they get way too rough and I have to stop playing with them until they calm down.

The kid couldn't get away and by trying to push the cat off was only provoking it more. To see anyone hit any animal that hard makes me feel like he deserved to be tackled, but really his parent should have stepped in. The kid just wanted the cat to stop.

[–]ozziegt 17 points18 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It looks like the parents think it is ok to teach the kid to wrestle with the cat. Chances are pretty good that the cat has been declawed, but it's still really poor parenting and pet care there.

[–]TheCarpe 32 points33 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'm not 100% sure about Russia, but I know in many European countries it is considered animal abuse to declaw a cat. There's a fair chance this cat does indeed have claws, which would certainly explain the childs cries of pain, especially as the cat is clamped down hard on his foot. Ouch. First I felt bad for the cat, then I felt bad for the kid, now I feel bad for both.

[–]tireytha 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's not the cat's fault. If the parents are filming a child who doesn't understand or egging him to hit the cat, it's not the child's fault either, but it's still not the cat's fault.

It's the fucking parents fault. They should be ashamed, but they won't be.

[–]bitter_cynical_angry 47 points48 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

This doesn't show the beginning either though; the cat is definitely pissed, but whatever caused it happened before this video started, so we still don't know the whole story.

[–]niugnep24 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

But the video that showed what happened before wouldn't show what happened before that ... maybe this is a long-running feud, going back generations!

[–]Spiveym1 20 points21 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Some of the comments in this thread are baffling. There is clearly more to be seen than what was shown in the .gif but people are still jumping to stupid conclusions.

[–]adhoc_pirate 189 points190 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

To be fair to the kid, this short gif doesn't show the full context of the event.

The gif starts with the child crying, so it is entirely possible that the kid had tried to stroke or pet the cat, meaning no harm, and in return was scratched or bitten. Now this being a young child who is now scared, confused, upset, and in pain lashes out, slapping the cat - an entirely natural response for a child of that age. It doesn't make the child a brat, or a bastard.

If anyone is to blame, it is the adults who are standing by filming a crying child instead of intervening before it escalates.

[–]sushisushisushi 20 points21 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's clear the kid was afraid and lashing out. I couldn't believe people were upvoting comments about animal abuse and cheering on the cat when I entered this thread.

Thankfully someone posted the whole YouTube video for context. This is not a case of animal abuse, unless by animal you mean "human babies"

I don't know about that. Granted, he shouldn't have hit the cat, but look at his expression the moments prior. He looks pretty upset; maybe the cat hit him or hissed at him before the incident? Either way, never fuck with an agitated kitty.

The woman (probably mother) around 0:20 says "Hit him" so I guess that stupid cunt is to blame, not the kid.

[–]XS4Me 38 points39 points ago

You know what worries me the most is Reddit's predisposition to pass judgment on a kid based on a crudely edited gif. Half of the posts on this thread praise the cat and make fun of the toddler.

The full video depicts a case which is well into child cruelty territory.

[–]Krispyz 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

hmm, I never thought the child was to blame. They rarely comprehend the effect of their actions. It is sad that many people assumed the kid intentional wished pain upon the cat, you could easily see in the gif that the kid was upset before the cat "attacked" him.

[–]Semajal 7 points8 points ago

Yeah I feel sorry for both kid and cat as the parent was letting it all happen.

[–]chrismikehunt 80 points81 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The real 'villain' here is the one holding the camera. The kid is crying at first so they already had a hint that everything wasn't kosher. But more so, look when he kid hits the cat, the camera doesn't 'drop' or move or show any indication they were diving in there to stop the situation, what if the cat didn't attack and the kid went in again and poked the cats eye or something, or the cat took out the kids eye when attacking. As soon as the kid struck that cat their priority should have been getting in there, moving the kid away from the cat and severely reprimanding him. Not fucking filming.

[–]Nall 7 points8 points ago

The mom (I'm guessing) sits and watches the kid getting bit and scratched by the cat for a solid 15 seconds, at which point she tells the kid to hit the cat (in Russian, so this is according to the people here saying that's what she said).

little kid's parents are fuckwads: http://vimeo.com/32420272 ... you should take great care to make sure your animals will get along with your babies. I don't have kids myself, but I have friends who had to turn their house cats into outdoor cats when they felt the animal could put their child at risk. Maybe when your cat starts "playing" with your baby by rolling and biting it (which you can't fault the cat for)... remove your cat instead of grabbing a camera to document it.

I have a little girl, about 21 months old now, that refused to stop chasing the cat and grabbing its fur and tail. Now, I know it is hard to make a child that young understand what the problem is, but a couple of band-aids later, she now gives the cat a wide berth. I never tried to "punish" the cat for scratching her. The cat didn't know any better and was just defending itself, and my daughter learned a valuable lesson.

She didn't like being picked up, I was an idiot kid and insisted on picking her up and squeezing her because my cat let me do that shit. Cousin's cat attacked my face, and it was off to urgent care. And no one felt sorry for me either. i was being an asshole.

There was this kid that would come over sometimes (the little brother of a friend of my brother, and our parents were friends, but he was a bit younger than I was) and he would chase our cat and grab its tail. Our cat didn't care for it a scratched him hard. He never did it again after that.

Properly dosed corporal punishment is extremely effective morality imprinting method proven by countless generations before us. Cue the "think of the children" screams.

[–][deleted] 35 points36 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Not a popular view around here, but it certainly has moments. Obviously no one would condone abuse, but pain receptors have been teaching the human brain what not to do for a long, LONG time. To completely abandon that principle in all forms seems misguided imo.

[–]Red_Dog1880 19 points20 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

A thin line between abuse and punishment. If I did something really bad my dad would grab me, shake me around while shouting super hard, sometimes a slap on the back of the head.

I turned out pretty good, and I'd like to believe I have been brought up with good morals and a good idea of good and bad.

This is why I always laugh when people say 'You should never lay hands on your children', I guess they never met our neighbours who never punish their kids and have the worst brats ever.

[–]ex_nihilo 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's just the difference between making myself feel better by physically inflicting pain on another human vs. trying to improve that human's behavior by associating painful consequences with wrong behavior. Some people do not understand the difference, and you really have to calm down and not let your emotions rule you in order to properly discipline a child.

[–]Joker1337 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I do not understand objections to `cruel and unusual' punishment. While a judge should be benevolent in purpose, his awards should cause the criminal to suffer, else there is no punishment -- and pain is the basic mechanism built into us by millions of years of evolution which safeguards us by warning when something threatens our survival. Why should society refuse to use such a highly perfected survival mechanism?

[–]abHowitzer 39 points40 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Animals are animals. They require a different care from people. If I keep agitating a friend, he'll warn me when he's had it: "Do it again and I'll kick you in the face."

A cat would just kick you in the face. Only way to learn that is by getting kicked once.

[–]mrhightech 59 points60 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Cats will warn you before hand if you can read the cues. Dilated pupils, flat ears, raised hair, meowing. But I find a good mood indicator is tail movement. If the cat whips it from side to side, you can bet he's at the very least pissed off.

[–]fancytalk 28 points29 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Some cats are just assholes though. I knew a cat who would scratch you if you stopped petting him before he was ready. Or if he suddenly decided he didn't want to be pet anymore while you were doing it. Either way, no warning.

[–]stationhollow 28 points29 points ago

My cat wags his tail like a dog when he is happy. But he is super nice. You can pick him up by the legs and hold him upside down and all he would do is meow sadly at you. Poor kitty.

The kid's already crying, which means they were letting them play without explaining well enough to the kid how to treat the animal. If your reaction to this is to say the kid deserves it, you're really not considering the fact that he appears to be 2 or 3 and the parents are entirely to blame for the way he's acting. He doesn't understand.

[–]Fruktansvard 144 points145 points ago

Agreed. We have no idea what happened before this picture. For all we know, the kid might be the one retaliating after being scratched.

A poorly trained or socialized dog will not put up with your shit, either. Sometimes, it will not even give you a chance to give it shit.

I love dogs, but they are much more territorial than cats (cats are territorial, but mostly with other cats and animals). A dog might chase you away, and the more you run, the more it wants to get a nip in.

I had a cat that liked to sit on the kitchen counter by the cookie jar. My youngest son (3 at the time) didn't like that because every time he wanted a cookie, she would bat at him. One day, I hear my son in the living room saying, "Heeeere kitty, kitty, kitty." I thought, "How cute." Turned the corner to see him holding a wiffle bat behind his back while the cat was hiding under the dinning room table.

I wouldn't claim the parents aren't doing a good job based on a 5-second gif. Sometimes kids just do stupid shit, regardless of how well they're brought up. The real judge of parenting should come from how the parents reacted afterwards. If they thought the kid deserved it for treating the cat that way, then they're good parents. If they put the cat down for it, then they are indeed shitty parents.

The cat was playfully biting him beforehand, the kid was in a bit of a fit and couldn't control his temper, and lashed out. It's completely understandable. So, the kid appears to be crying at the start of the gif. Since crying is followed up with hitting the cat I assume the cat is the cause of the tears (this is further backed up by the fact that cats are fucking evil).

On the flip side, if a dog attacked a kid like that for any reason, people would be screaming to have it put down. However, since it's just a cat, it's funny!
