Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

people can be in wheelchairs for a variety of reasons other than being paralysed at the legs, some of them just having difficulty moving (with a sprained/fractured ankle for example, walking long distances or standing on crutches can be damaging to the hip or the good leg).

Thanks, legitimately. My gf has juvie arthritis and redditors have told me that she should have to disclose her private health issues to strangers to justify the accommodations she gets.

Psoriatic arthritis here, for the last 7 years or so (I'm 27). "You don't have arthritis." OH YOU IGNORANT ASSHAT, would that I could transport your poor little mind into my creaky, flaky, fucked-up body for a few hours some morning. Then we'll see what you've gotta say about my being "too young".

I have fibromyalgia that is usually very manageable but will occasionally flare up extremely badly and make walking very painful and standing for a long period of time completely exhausting. I have a handicap placard because of it, which I keep in the car for those bad periods... but really, when it's bad enough that I would really need to use it, I just don't go out. It's not worth the looks and worrying about having to explain myself to random strangers. Invisible disabilities suck.

[–]anonmedgrow 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Ya know, fuck explaining yourself to them... If there really that worried you are trying to beat some system by faking a disability, than piss them off more by acting as if that is the case. Maybe they will do something to embarrass themselves, and learn a lesson in minding there own business. God I can't stand people that do shit like that. As if THEY have some authority over weather or not your disability is real.

This is the same reddit that thinks trans women should have to disclose their private medical history to everyone they meet to stop them "deceiving" others. I'm not surprised at their insensitivity.

I can't agree more. I'm a 33 woman and have MS. It affects my legs and depending on the day it varies how long I can walk around. I get dirty looks all the time when I park in the handicap spot.

It's too bad they don't stick around to see what I look like walking out. I'm usually limping and dragging my foot.

Me too (except I'm 46). What's the point of using my cane when the shopping carts work just fine?

My sister is will be 21 this January and also has MS. The comments for this photo cause me to rage like no other post on Reddit. I fractured my hip in my late twenties. It was a relatively minor stress fracture, but any bone injury to the hip is serious... and painful. Doctors can't really do much for it - it's either a full body cast, which was overkill for me, or just stay off it as much as possible. I chose option B. Outwardly, I appeared I was a healthy looking younger man with a limp. In actuality, getting to work was a death march.

Inevitably I'd be sitting in the handicapped seat in the subway and a full term pregnant woman would get on. (Actually this happened several times during my healing process, maybe it was 9 months after a Reddit outage.) Giant belly, clearly laboring to just to get on the subway car. I found that I'd rather give up my coveted seat and surf the subway pain than suffer the dirty looks from people who thought I some lazy-ass who wouldn't give up his seat.

I completely agree with you as I broke my ankle last year and was one of those people in a wheelchair and a walker but I get pissy about able bodied people in handicapped spots. In my state it's a signature from the doctor and a trip to the DMV to get a tag. It's not hard to get. Seeing people park in the handicap spots because it's convenient really pissed me off and since I was out on medical I had plenty of time to park them in and let them try to explain to the officer why they shouldn't get a $200 ticket.

[–]Colecoman1982 27 points28 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I think you and clifyt are talking about different things. You seem to be talking about people without handicapped placards parking in handicapped spots. He/she seems to be talking about people with placards that don't seem to, actually, be handicapped when you see them first get out of the car. A lot of ignorant morons rage about people getting placards when "they don't really deserve them" while, in reality, it's that they don't really know enough about the person's disability to have a legitimate opinion in the first place.

She could have Multiple Sclerosis - she can walk, but only a few meters at a time. To get anywhere further than just around the house, she needs a wheelchair, but she can stand alright.

I know someone (close family) who has MS and this is literally the look, they get when they stand up and walk a short while (or suddenly hand over their crutches to someone else to walk without them for a while).

For those who don't know MS, it's a chronical illness from uncertain causes that in some cases can make the nerves controlling muscles behave like "loose connetions" in electrical wires - in other cases, the symptoms can be much more severe.

Glad somebody posted this. Took my son out in his wheel chair for the first time a couple weeks ago. He has Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. At 6 years old, he can still walk, run, climb stairs, etc. but the long walk and extended period of standing during the Remembrance Day ceremonies would have been too much, so we used the chair.

[–]phathiker 35 points36 points ago

I can affirm this. My mother in law has MS. Walking is a difficult task for her and the MS can be worse on some days than others. Often, wheelchairs are the only answer to get around, although she is not confined to one. Standing up would not be impossible for her while riding in one.

[–]thinkmac 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Well, my ex has MS (or potentially lyme disease...for years, docs still can't seem to figure out).. and sometimes, she wakes up blind for awhile. That's definitely a scary moment for her.

This. A million FUCKING times this! I used to be that person. I was in a wheelchair for a while and yet I could still stand.

I got so many dirty looks.

Whenever I see this re-posted, I want to strangle someone.

EDIT:

Jesus fucking CHRIST, you people. Calm yourselves down! You've never met me before and you're already making stupid assumptions about me. I wasn't trying to game the system for benefits, I'm not lazy, and I'm not morbidly obese. Don't be asswipes.

I was temporarily paralyzed from the chest down when I was 15 due to an autoimmune condition called transverse myelitis.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transverse_myelitis

After I was treated with anti-inflammatory drugs, it took months of physical therapy to regain my ability to walk. There was a short period where I was able to stand, but only weakly and only on both legs, so walking was out of the question. During that time, my only option was a wheelchair.

You're all a bunch of smug self-righteous assholes. Grow the fuck up.

EDIT 2:

Alright, alright. I lost my temper. I apologize. We all say shit that we regret when we're angry, etc etc. But I really do apologize.

My eyesight is bad enough to qualify me as legally blind. Even though I can still read things that are close to my face, including a large computer monitor set to high DPI settings, I pretty much can't see any detail more then a foot away from my face.

When I go out I use one of those white and red canes to make sure I don't trip over stuff on the ground that I can't see, and to act as a kind of signal to people around me that I could bump into them. But still, people always assume cane = completely blind and I've gotten some comments about "faking it" when i'd, say, get on the bus with the cane, sit down, and read the bus schedule (albeit holding it an inch from my face and still squinting.)

[–]stocksy 6 points7 points ago

In the UK, a red and white cane means that the person has both reduced vision and reduced hearing. Is this not the case where you live, or do you also have hearing difficulties?

[–]sirbruce 29 points30 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

In the US, a red and white cane means delicious peppermint candy.

[–]polygonalchemist 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

When I say white and red cane, I mean one that's mostly white, save for a black handle and the bottom segment in red. Usually it's coated in reflector material as well.

Here in the US, I've only ever seen them used by the blind/visually impaired. I'm not sure if the hearing impaired have a similar signal device or not.

What kind of cane do people who are just visually impaired used in the UK?

[–]stocksy 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Oh, that's slightly different. In the UK, a visually impaired person's cane would be completely white except for the handle which might be black or brown. The 'deaf and blind' cane is the same except that it has two red bands about half way along the length of the cane.

Some people carry a cane which is only about half as long and doesn't reach the ground. Presumably these are people who can't see very well, but don't need the cane to navigate.

My previous boss suddenly went almost completely blind over the course of a few days (dreadful story), so you tend to pick these things up.

[–]tsez 1 point2 points ago

You don't have to edit your post to explain - most of us here aren't as blatantly ignorant as to assume that the only disabilities that exist are absolute and total.

MS, epilepsy, heart conditions, some forms of diabetes, visual conditions.. these are all invisible disabilities that people just assume don't exist. Unless you're missing a limb or have a completely shattered spine, it doesn't seem to exist in their world. Narrow minded people aren't worth the time it takes to explain.

Not just redditors, this is the human condition. Everyone indulges in self-righteousness. It is an emotion we use that we use to take the blame off of us and put it onto others. Once you understand that humans are basically selfish, but yet pretend to be generous, you will understand a lot of human behavior, as it is based in maintaining this illusion. its sad, I know.

I injured my foot last year and needed to rent a wheelchair when I went to the mall. I could still walk reasonably fine, but not over long distances. Believe me, it's embarrassing and hard to get out of a wheelchair to do anything, even when you have totally legit reasons for doing so.

My girlfriend was in a wheelchair for a while because her neck hurt like hell and because she would spontaneously pass out now and then and ran the risk of falling down, hitting her head and making her neck injury worse.

She could have done this without much risk but still really needed to be in a wheelchair.

Also it can be extremely painfull for some people. Or most importantly some people might suffer from certain injuries, walk in a wrong way which will effect other parts of their body as well.

I broke my leg two years ago and for various months I had a problem walking. Eventually the problem spread to my back. You can also tell ig you have a look at my shoes, my left shoe is always fucked up.

This is what I came in here to post. This isn't front page material. I kind of chuckled due to the headline, but sometimes people are in a wheelchair because they have all kinds of problems other than paralyzation. This isn't very funny due to the fact that I've seen hundreds of people in wheelchairs, and only a small fraction of them were actually confined to their chairs.

Yep. I've seen this exact picture I think several times now, with very similar titles.

I was on crutches for about 3 months even though I could totally walk just fine without them. The orthopedic specialist wanted to try that before doing surgery to see if less stress on the ankle would improve the problem. I got so many dirty looks whenever I went without the crutches - which I really shouldn't have been doing.

My mother has Multiple Sclerosis. She can walk and stand, but it is very, very hard for her and extremely exhausting. Wheelchair does not equal completely incapable of walking.

Notice that this woman is bracing herself against the shelf with her left hand. Also notice that her feet are unnaturally close together (indicating that lifting them to adjust their position on the floor is hard for her) and that she seems to be leaning heavily on the shelf. This is exactly the posture that my mother has in similar situations.

Don't judge people.

[–]Thorzuul 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

My mom has MS as well. We eventually decided that a Segway of all things was the best option for her. Standing isn't too difficult for her, just walking. It offers her great mobility and speed, and allows her to live a fairly normal daily life, which is vastly preferable to what a motorized chair would have offered. But the looks she gets, good god. It has a handicap designation right on the front, yet in public people treat her like she's some snooty rich woman too good for walking. She is neither snooty nor rich, and she'd love to take walking if she could. Just goes to show what people's judgments are worth.

[–]adhoc_lobster 13 points14 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

So does my mom. She has been in a wheelchair for 10+ years and can stand long enough to say, reach things on a shelf, or to get herself up and down from a chair to the wheelchair. But apparently if you're in a wheelchair you're either paralyzed or faking it?

[–]WreckerCrew 301 points302 points ago

As someone that has had to use a wheelchair in the pass due to extreme lower back pain, I can say that you can stand with pain, but that doesn't mean you can stand for long or walk around.

I definitely appreciated those motorized shopping carts some US supermarkets have while suffering from a herniated disc a while back. Didn't really care if people thought it was odd that I just walked in a d used one; my back was killing me!

[–]Sarria22 7 points8 points ago

I suppose some people envision crippled people being wheeled in / carried in stretchers / hanging on peoples backs until transferred into moto-carts.

Upvote XenOnex! Motorized shopping carts came in great with my last two pregnancy's due to preeclampsia. Vouching for people with lower back pain. My better half had surgery a few years ago and still has back problems. So mad respect for peeps with back problems, it's really NO fun.

[–]Xen0nex 1 point2 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

People don't appreciate how great it is to be able to do things like bend or sleep until you get back issues... Hope both your backs stay flexible!

Okay, rant time: I had problems with the aforementioned herniated disc that all doctors/physical therapists I visited in 2 countries assured me would require steroids / expensive meds and/or very expensive surgery and take ~2 years to fully recover, and even then not ever have the same mobility as before.

Enter Dr. Bookspan. Found her online, her main idea is that most back problems can be fixed without drugs or surgery. Basically all of her info is freely available on her (poorly formatted) website and fitness blog indexed by particular issues, though she has books and offers comparatively cheap classes/sessions. Good starting point is this page.

Aside from having a biography that is eerily similar to superheroes such as Bruce Wayne or Tony Stark (minus wealth), she was able to get me from being unable to even sit up to a table to eat, to running around doing squats after just visiting her (I had some extraneous issues that didn't allow me to take advantage of all the 'normal' advice on her website.)

tl;dr If you have back issues, have had back issues, don't have back issues and want to stay that way, check out at least this page. It makes tons of sense and really works.

EDIT: Also I have recently become an avid fan of the standing desk, because sitting will kill you.

I have a friend who can walk fully unaided. She looks a bit unhealthy, but otherwise you wouldn't know that she has a chronic illness. She is a very pretty girl, with a crippling pride. She will never use a wheelchair in public, because she doesn't want to be judged when she is seen walking into her car.

Truth is, though, walking for 10 minutes will wipe her out for half a day.

Edit: Spelling.

Also: Look up "Spoons".

TL:DR An analogy using spoons to represent the consumption and availability of energy to a disabled person. If any task requiring movement cost 1 spoon, and you had only 10 for the day, how would you use them?

I'm right there with her. I have Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, and I look absolutely normal. I can walk normally - even though I can have a really hard limp some days. Sometimes I get nasty looks when I'm using my handicapped pass. What they don't know is that I also use up all my energy by walking around because I refuse to use my wheelchair. Not only do I find it mortifying, but people like to come up and ask me what is wrong. I hate that shit. Damn people!

[–]madcatlady 2 points3 points ago

My mom can walk but it hurts her so much that she needs a wheelchair to get around.

[–]Cristal1337 12 points13 points ago

True story:

On long distances I usually sit in a wheelchair. When we were in Turkey my sister was pushing me at the airport. Arriving at an escalator she tipped the wheelchair to the front signalling that I have to get out (so she could get the wheelchair up the escalator). People around us looked shocked xD

Maybe because I shouted: "I...I CAN WALK!"

[–]DerpingItUp 60 points61 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

No. I have Cerebral Palsy and use crutches, a motorised scooter and sometimes a manual wheelchair. I can still stand and reach if I need to - my balance is just a bit fucked if I do so. Downvoted for your ignorance. ಠ_ಠ

[–]DerpingItUp 2 points3 points ago

Also: Spoons?

[–]madcatlady 12 points13 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Spoons should be given the publicity... I've taught this to many a disabled friend, and the whole thing has given them a way of succinctly explaining what it's like to be ill.

TL:DR

Making an analogy between spoons and energy consumption during the day, if you started with 10 spoons, and anything requiring the effort of movement cost you a spoon, what choices would you make? Welcome to life with a disability.

[–]DerpingItUp 4 points5 points ago

My disabled friends cried with happiness when I said "I'll get this, conserve your spoons". It's really helpful.

I went to a school with a disabilities resource, so that lower mobility kids could go to a mainstream school. I therfore have a fair number of disabled friends, for those who wondered.

[–]corbie 4 points5 points ago

I was in a wheelchair for awhile, but could stand up if needed for a second. Good thing as it was awful even with those handicapped bathroom stalls. Could not walk, the leg was broken, the tendons torn etc. They did not put a cast on it, just a brace.

And yes, if people thought you were faking in any way it was brutal.

So, Inky, hope you never end up like that!

Though people in wheelchairs also can be assholes too. My husband took me to a movie, we put coats on the handicapped seat and he wheeled me to the bathroom. There was more than one handicapped seat for wheelchairs. When we got back, some asshole in a wheelchair had thrown our coats across the theater and was sitting in that one. We said nothing, husband picked up the coats and we sat in the other one that was vacant. I hope he felt bad. He never said a word.

Yeah, this pretty much pisses me off whenever I see it. My roommate uses a wheelchair because he has a prosthetic leg, and his other leg is fucked and requires a big crazy plastic brace. He can walk, but it causes him a lot of pain.

In this picture, you can't really see from the thighs down. Considering her possible ailments or afflictions, you bet your sweet little ass I'd be standing up to reach the top-shelf shit if I were her.

Thanks for saying this. I hate people who think that you are either completely wheelchair bound or no disabled at all, like there's no in between mobility for various disabilities. My mother has MS. Some days she can get out of her wheelchair, some days she can't.

My roommate has cerebral palsy, and he can walk/stand with the aid of his crutches, but it is a lot easier for him to get around on a daily basis with a wheel chair. One time in class he stood up and my other roommate shouted "It's a miracle!" and the entire class just turned and stared in complete shock/disbelief.
