I can confirm this. I am a trained tree surgeon and there is nothing quite like a tree in the wind. It's amazing just how much they bend in even the slightest breeze. Extremely good fun.

EDIT - I forgot Americans probably call them something else. We're not like lumberjacks in that we don't come and cut it down for commercial gain. We remove damaged, dead, and dangerous limbs without harming the rest of the tree. Though a lot of our work is dismantling dangerous trees (in Britain we usually can't just straight fell them) or cosmetically cutting the top off so people in houses can see over them which is quite annoying because the tree was there hundreds of years before them.

I never understood this. Why buy a house surrounded by trees if you just plan on cutting them down.

Ropes. Then limb walk out and set it up. Watch a few roped tree climbing videos on youtube and you'll get the idea. Once you're up there you can tarzan swing anywhere you want.

It would but in the UK where the trees aren't too big that's how we do it. Either throw a rope over or use a throwline and then start hauling yourself up. It is a little easier than it sounds because you flick the rope close to the trunk and walk up it whilst pulling. It is possible to set up a pulley from the ground but not worth the hassle half the time, better to just get up and do it all at the same level.

People who are using these things tend to be in pretty good shape. Whether they're into eating healthy or are just such dirtbags (a term I use endearingly) that they don't earn enough money to afford a surplus of food, people needing these are seldom at risk of overloading.

Other than that... I'd say a person around 275 should be quite nervous in a single. And I wouldn't get in double with someone much over 225. I've read reports of knots and buckles on these things starting to fail from two fat climbers totaling 500 pounds.

I was just thinking how awesome it would be to have a bunch of people camping in these suspended from bank buildings for the occupation. It'd create a massive spectacle, if they wanted to remove the people in the tents. I'm not even sure many municipalities would have the resources needed to respond. Actually, I'm not sure what tools would be required to respond safely. Maybe fire department ladder trucks...but that'd still be pretty dramatic.

They're called "portaledges" (not "port-o-ledge") and you can buy them for about $900 each from rock climbing suppliers ($250 more for the rain fly). They're used for multi-day climbs and Black Diamond, North Face, Metolius all make them. If I were in the market, I'd buy from Fish products, because the owner is not a corporate shill.
